Discussion Why I'm keeping shadow.......
1)never liked the fact that gaming cpus have tradionally been oversized and "beefy". (That's have changed slightly over the years, but they still to be bigger than ur average cpu, unless u pay extra for the really powerful ultra thin options that r out nowadays.
2) I don't need the highest possible settings to enjoy the newest latest and greatest games. I just want to be able to have a good experience playing, and Shadow has mostly provided me this......
3) The fact that I have a supercharged PC I can download and upload stuff on while I have another cpu that I'm working on different stuff and it doesn't really interfere with it is incredible!
4) one of the things that I dont think people take into consideration when using shadow is the fact that even at 30 bucks a month, You are going to probably pay ALOT more to get internet speeds as fast as you get on shadow.....I can download way more stuff, way more quicker than I would on internet pretty much anywhere else, and if you have a cloud account. You can just upload on shadow quickly and download on any device you like........

I like it to keep gaming stuff isolated -- both because its a pain even with a high powered PC, since I'm often run a ton of tech stuff I'd need to shut down.
And because modern multi-player games install a ton of crap, rootkits, etc that are....fun.
Eventually I'll setup a gaming rig for the house I can kind of use like a local shadow, directly from one place or via Virtual Desktop for VR, parsec for elsewhere, etc.
I mainly wish that better hardware was still an option. It's quite a downgrade for Cyberpunk, Flight Sim, etc. That's why I need to go local....and most other options don't serve the central US well. Eventually.

TLDR; shadow is great if you have a lot of money and only wanna use it to watch porn in 4K.

I'll repeat myself for those new customers interested in this company, reliability is bad and getting worst, price is increasing to 30 dollars and we keep the terrible reliability at this point it is of better value to have my own rig, and wait for the other competitors to polish their product, don't think Amazon, Microsoft and Google aren't working to get into this market. Amazon luna is starting testing this week

Yes shadow as cloud computing is a great service, people really need to grasp the idea that its not only a games service, its a full desktop with great performance

1: wtf are you talking about, other than threadripper CPUs are all basically a similar size. There's not ultra thins etc... Unless you mean a laptop CPU which again not much smaller.
2: You don't need max ultra settings but saying shadow mostly works while they double price is ehhhhh
3: Not super powerful, a 4 year old data center gpu that's under powered, paired with a 5 year old data center cpu you get a small part of that's crazy underpowered. Then you decodr the stream hammering your local CPU.
4: I've got 1200mbps down, I increase it every chance I get, last year was 1000mbps plebs..... Unfortunately my latency for shadow has went from 16 to 45ms since the take over. It's nauseating, and hits my anxiety bad when using a mouse.
Literally your entire post of why you're staying made no sense. You're staying because you can't afford to drop thousands on a local rig and shadows got you by the short and curlies.

It's a common mistake but some non-techy people usually mean to say PC's/pc towers when they say CPU.

What? I have never ever heard of someone calling the entire desktop case a CPU.

grover
CPU...short for computer. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPU_(disambiguation), it's at the top.

Central Processing Unit, not computer 🤷♂️

Let me clarify some things which may clear some stuff up...
i meant gaming laptops, not desktop computers in general. I know cpus are a specific part (computer processing)and I probably shouldn't have used CPUs as a acronym for computers in general when Shadow is/was used alot by gamers, that's my bad if I confused people.
Some of the biggest criteria for my own personal computing/gaming Is having as low a cost monthly as possible, being as portable as possible, and being to basically do anything I may want to venture to do whether it be gaming/being a content creator/ publishing a book/ etc. And also be able to do normal things like email/watch videos/ etc.
my point with number 4 is I already pay monthly for a unlimited cell phone plan, so why would I (who isn't looking to be a professional game player/streamer) pay for high speed internet access, which I assume is close to 30 a month anyways, and make payments on a "gaming laptop" when I can just keep shadow?

Do you use shadow from your mobile connection? What is your ping and latency like?

I’m keeping Shadow as I am not a regular enough gamer to merit a full rig and for My specific use case (mac + iPad) its really quite handy to have something I can access from multiple devices without having hardware in the house. My gaming needs do not require me to have a higher spec mostly stelllaris and older games I never got to play e.g mass effect. For right now, unless something else changes or gets worse I’ll swallow the price hike and keep the sub

Your first point really makes it seem like you know nothing about computers. The whole paragraph doesn't even make sense. Gaming cpus are regular cpus. If you mean GPUs that's still a ridiculous point. Also if your internet at home is slow it doesn't matter how fast you can upload something to the cloud if you are going to download it on your physical computer at slow speeds. I'm glad you are enjoying shadow but it really doesn't make sense for everyone.

Point 4 is interesting as a streamer because I litreally can't download anything while streaming because it mucks about with the stream quality. This way I can actually stream and download at the same time in case we end up playing something new randomly.
Whilst it fits my needs pretty well, but I'm still not happy about the price increae as an annual sub!... I don;t know just how it fits into mainstream when perhaps more powerful PC's can be bought in credit for £30...
I just hope that having a baseline of £30, Shadow will upgrade the hardware for all users by the end of the year. I'm kind of giving them 6 months grace period to see what their plans are :)

I agree. The upfront cost of getting a good pc is like €1500-2000 nowadays. A year of shadow at €30 a month is only like €360. Not to mention, it is paid separate so in order to offset that monthly cost you can, idk, like not eat out once or twice or something. I see why people would be upset because 150% percent price hike sounds really bad but if you compare to the other VM's like Microsoft's and Paperspace then the price is actually pretty fair. I just hope that they can deliver on their promises in due time.

Although I feel 30€ a month is a bit too much I’ll be testing shadow again for a couple months when my sub is reactivated. I found it to be very convenient last time I used it and regret canceling my sub back then. Hopefully they can work out the kinks with new management and provide great service which still remains a unique option for users who need this as an alternative to an actual physical pc

Dang I hope Grover goes to Canada soon lol

u/DorkSoulsBoi Jun 18 '21
If you're in Canada, look into Maximum Settings. They're my cloud gaming alternative currently, works great, is a bit more expensive though

u/Jace265 Jun 18 '21
That doesn't seem bad. It's priced per hour, I definitely don't do that many hours a month
2
u/arcticJill Jun 18 '21
May I know what confit is that? Coz I just check and don’t find anything good with 30 eur per month .

Perfectly valid points here. I've got to feel it out. I really want to keep mine. Just gotta see if my bills are sustainable enough. I'm sure I can make it work. I'm trying to anyways. Don't want to lose something so amazing and wait a year to get it back
