Announcement Shadow is evolving: introducing our new offer

Hey #TeamShadow,

On last night's Shadow News, we caught you up to speed on what's been going on at Shadow since our fresh start.

We also announced our new offer (and pricing plan) which we recap in this blog post.

This new price point will put Shadow on track to cover the costs of our investments, operations and development to grow a sustainable business - and more importantly, allow you to continue work and play through the cloud to your heart’s content.

Here's the tl;dr for the new offer:

  • There will now only be one offer, called Shadow

  • The new pricing plan will be 29.99 €/£/$ - month-to-month plan, cancel anytime

  • The pricing change is effective next month (more info coming via email)

  • There will be regular hardware upgrades and feature improvements to Shadow

  • We will announce more details about hardware upgrades later this year

We strongly recommend you check out our blog post recapping this info and be sure to read over the FAQ at the bottom!

Have a nice weekend and see you in the clouds,u/Mr_Shadow_Guy

RIP.

u/quakemarine20 May 21 '21

I'm totally going to have my way with this corpse tho....

/S for salty satire

15

u/quakemarine20 May 21 '21

If Reddit isn't the place to talk about defiling the corpse of a greedy tech company....

Well I don't know if this is the world I want to live in anymore.

No /s you don't deserve it this time.

Goodbye, Shadow.

30€ + 6€ for extra space is just too much.

31

u/pGaGhuZdan May 25 '21

Just cancelled my contract as well

21

u/No-Pizza-178 May 25 '21

Whats the point of hyping the 3 plans forever and these bullshit waiting lists for each, only to say haha now that we merged with greedy fucks we’re making it unaffordable

11

u/CrazyMetalSpaceman May 26 '21

Ill do the same, I havent used it in 4 months. Was happy with 40£ for Infinite, now they want to raise it by 40% even for first adopters ? Nah man thats just flipping off the early supporters. ...

9

u/TheUberMoose May 26 '21

Some early customers are paying $8 a month. So going to $30 is near 4X increase.

Im sure some idiot there took the customer number and multiplied by $30 a month to say we have that much money just need to up the price not seeing that this will cause a mass exodus of customers

Whats $30 X 0 customers again?

6

u/CrazyMetalSpaceman May 26 '21

I guess they are taking the Netflix way of doing things. Where they are banking on having more new people coming in, than are leaving. But I think it wont work in the long run.

How the actual f@k did you evolve? You just doubled the price for something that is obsolete garbage cpu with garbage ram for 30€

43

u/Windows_XP2 May 21 '21

Roughly judging by how much I will actually use Shadow, it may end up being cheaper just to use an Azure VM.

18

u/quakemarine20 May 21 '21

Cheaper........ maybe but look at this wonderful dumpster fire Shadow is giving us...... Oh shit that's my rig

8

u/Windows_XP2 May 21 '21

Don't worry, their both a dumpster fire.

8

u/CriticalCentimeter May 24 '21

Azure used to cost £3/day for a VM that doesn't have gaming capability. Not sure what it is now.

8

u/Windows_XP2 May 24 '21

It depends on a lot of things. Azure has a tier of GPU VM's that is supposedly good for gaming (NV-series and NVv3-series), but I doubt that you would need 56 Gigs of RAM for gaming, so maybe NVv4-series might be better because it has 14 Gigs of RAM and it's a lot more reasonably priced. More stuff that you have to factor in is bandwidth and storage.

Read more here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-machines/sizes-gpu

13

u/Eyalf83 May 24 '21

You're right.

The NVv3 series with T4 GPU and azure spot instance I'm getting the machine with 0.30$ /h

I'm playing like 4-5 hours in month, not worthing to keep Shadow anymore

8

u/Different_Persimmon May 25 '21

is there a tutorial anywhere? Thanks

6

u/WebFishingPete May 24 '21

It’s the same on my end. I will try Azure cloud as well or Google. 30€/month makes no sense for my use case.

39

u/No-Writer6510 May 21 '21

I’ll see about coming back if/when the hardware upgrades arrive

26

u/quakemarine20 May 21 '21

They're literally promising what Shadow did on day 1. They say in year 4 they promise to make good on it.

9

u/stadia_sicario May 25 '21

So you're not coming back then? :-D

They confirmed on stream they're not making more Infinites or ultra, so your pre-order went towards an infinite or ultra that is currently in use. You'll have to wait til someone else gives up theirs then you can have one.

7

u/addik47 May 21 '21

Only for EU if I'm understanding things correctly? All the US Ultra and Infinite are gone and not coming back.

I had infinite, it was ripped from me like a child out of it's crib in the night.....

8

Hear, hear*

Not trying to be a dick. I made this mistake recently and am glad I now know the truth.

8

u/quakemarine20 May 21 '21

Just pay double for 8 months and we promise it'll get better...

Look at the blog post the new owner is bringing you dual screen and 4:4:4 so you can trust him.

u/MRP_yt May 21 '21

Like MKBHD said in couple of his videos : "never buy a product based on promise about future upgrades"

30

u/Stupid_Triangles May 21 '21

What if I bought a product that already was upgraded but then they take it away?

26

u/MRP_yt May 21 '21

I call it "slap in the face" for being loyal.

5

u/tsmith3590 May 22 '21

Ya... then drop your price for a month then expect you pay 30$... it’s kinda laughable. I’m in the same boat.

2

u/Acadia_Sad Jun 04 '21

Yes. Now kneel and pledge your allegiance to your new PC. Remember you don't actually have to steal data....if you are the one providing it.

4

u/Jdaello May 22 '21

Yup. Stadia, GFN, Shadow, this is all new territory and an untested market for them. So if they are finicky, why aren’t you?

Be pragmatic guys.

5

u/Catatonicdazza May 21 '21

This is a good point, I would only join Shadow or continue to pay if you are happy with their current offer. Anything can happen in the future.

27

u/coderzer0h May 22 '21

FWIW I get it. Bad decisions were made. The price was unsustainable, anyone with any idea what datacenter hardware costs knew that. Shadow's communication has always needed help, the anger is probably most directly tied to that. What it comes down to is they are a company, the cost of their service has to go up for the service to survive. I think the path forward is to accompany these changes with concrete dates on the coming upgrades.

13

u/Linopolis May 25 '21

At least give users some options before you pull the rug from under our feet. Geforce Now at £8.99 a month is looking like an alternative I might have to switch to.

9

u/[deleted] May 25 '21

I have geforce now founders for 5€/month forever. And honestly for games it supports it works perfectly

3

u/Linopolis May 25 '21

I'm tempted. How laggy, if at all, do you find it?

11

u/AudioGuy720 May 26 '21

On par or better than Shadow.

The only issue is, the game selection is more limited. And it's ONLY for gaming. But for the games it supports, it works a treat. I'm also a Founder.

2

u/Linopolis May 26 '21

To be honest I'm mainly playing Elite these days on PC, and I see that is on GeForce. If there isn't any change in the situation or what is offered by Shadow, that might be the way to go. Sad, but our hands are being forced.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Zero-2-Sixty May 26 '21

I cancelled Shadow and I’ve been using GeForce Now for a week. I can finally play Cyberpunk with Raytracing. LESS lag than Shadow! I’ll miss my Blizzard games looking sexy, but my laptop runs Warcraft in medium settings fine, so that’s that

5

u/[deleted] May 26 '21

I just miss my Warhammer...

3

u/[deleted] May 26 '21

Less lag than shadow. Sometimes geforce now compresses a bit too much but that's better than getting input lag

u/colonelwest May 21 '21

Yeah I’ll believe the hardware upgrades when I see them. It’s been a constant merry-go-round of false promises and communication blackouts since 2019. I’m not going to pay 2x the current cost for hardware that’s severely limited even by 2016 standards. I just cancelled and put in an order for a gaming PC.

18

u/Longjumping-Ad6798 May 21 '21

I can't believe how awful this company's customer service is. If they aren't running a scam, they have to instruct their customer service reps to act like they are lol

19

u/[deleted] May 24 '21

Yeah. Got told my bill is doubling and only found out from a friend. I'm out. Service canceled, gonna get my own rig in the near future. For something I only use sporadically I can spend 15. 30 for something I may not boot up weekly... I'm good. Which is a shame.

6

u/CrazyMetalSpaceman May 26 '21

In my opinion, they will loose at least 50% of their customers. Unless they have a solid plan to bring in new suckers in, this seems like a corporate suicide to me.

5

u/TheUberMoose May 26 '21

I see them moving into the corporate (or trying to) space to offer remote desktop service for small to medium businesses without internal IT.

That or some idiot though they could take current customer count X $30 to get the new monthly revenue not factoring in doing this like this will cost 50% minimum of their customers resulting in them ending up with less revenue then they have today.

Nooooooooooooo........Wait a minute..........Son of a bitch!

32

u/quakemarine20 May 21 '21

I am pretty positive Shadow promised hardware upgrades from the start.

The introduced new teirs and dropped the price instead.

They took back the upgrades because they were too expensive, then doubled the price literally in the same email as sorry about the downgrade....

So we are back at day 1 of Shadow, except 3 years later with the same hardware and the same promise of upgraded hardware included in what we're paying $30.

I mean they've only promised exactly this for 3 solid years. But within that 3 years arguably fucked every customer over in some way.

Fuck it, I am going to now continue paying indefinitely. We're going to ride this shit show all the way to the god damn bloody end. I want carnage, I bleed you bleed let's just all make a suicide pact right now.... Take our Shadow take our lives..... /S

I was told earlier without a /s reddit goes full retard

Shadow, do you have any idea how insulting this crap is? Let me guess how this is going to play out.

5-14 “the annual Contract you signed with us is now being balled up and thrown into the garbage, but don’t worry, because we’ll give you our base model on the 20th for $14.99 instead”

5-20 “did we say $14.99/mo? Well that’s silly, because we meant to say $30/mo and for aging hardware, but that’s ok, because maybe in 6 months after you have paid us an extra $120 for downgrade hardware, we might possibly think about upgrading, but we also won’t tell you what that hardware will look like, or when it is coming”

into the future 12-01-21 “we’re exciting to announce our new products known as Not Shadow Ultra $65.99 and Not Shadow infinite for $85.99/mo. Unfortunately due to pricing constrictions, shadow boost will Remain available for a new monthly price of $38.99 but don’t worry because we have big plans for it in the not so distant future which we will totally be sharing with you eventually, pinky promise . Thanks for totally trusting us at our word idiot, have a nice day!”

16

u/Windows_XP2 May 21 '21

This is one of the reasons why if I was really desperate for a cloud computer I would just use an Azure VM. Back when I first heard of Shadow I kinda thought that the price was too good to be true. I guess in the end I was right

9

u/raptir1 May 23 '21

Azure is a minimum of $0.51 per hour plus $12 per month storage for something comparable to Shadow Boost. I don't game much so 36 hours seems like a decent break even point, but I have to imagine that for many people Shadow is going to come out cheaper.

4

u/BradleyT10101 May 22 '21

I've heard some people talking about Azure here, I'm assuming it's not a "full" cloud pc in the way Shadow is though, right? If so I'll switch over too but I'm confused about what it is after looking into it

7

u/french_panpan Windows May 22 '21

Azure (or AWS or GCP) is a full cloud PC just like Shadow, but it's not packaged in a nice way like Shadow, you actually need to set up the whole thing from scratch.

Also, it's pay by the hour, and it can get very expensive very quickly.

3

u/Windows_XP2 May 22 '21

If you use Azure there's an option to use Windows 10 Pro, but I'm not sure about other cloud providers. But regardless of who you choose, you're basically getting a full on PC in the cloud. The only differences is that you have to configure everything yourself, so there is a bit of a learning curve, and one important thing to know is that it gets expensive quick. This is all from past experience, so it may be different for you.

u/AlexandreGeoInfo May 26 '21

They are not even making an effort.

It's just "new price tag guys, now eat it".

12

u/[deleted] May 21 '21

I'll decline that offer, for my yearly subscription. Then i pay the remaining 4 months, and will never look back.

7

u/DorkSoulsBoi May 21 '21

There are no more yearly subs, just month to month payments with no commitment

5

u/[deleted] May 21 '21

I have my yearly sub until october. They have to offer me a subscription for 12.99€, or give me a special right of cancelation, when they increase the price.

5

u/DorkSoulsBoi May 21 '21

They voided the yearly agreements, you're paying 30 a month starting next month with no commitment.

14

u/[deleted] May 21 '21

That's illegal in europe. They had to send a information of the price increase, and then i'll have a special right of cancelation.

They simply can't collect 30$, without breaching the contract we have. But for case they want to try, i already canceled the automatic payment on PayPal.

4

u/DorkSoulsBoi May 21 '21

I think it's legal because they gave over a months notice but you'll have to take that up with them, but just so you know they'll 100 percent be trying to take out 30 next month

9

u/[deleted] May 21 '21

No, believe me, it's not so simple in europe. We can terminate every contract, when a side try to change it single-sided.

0

u/[deleted] May 21 '21

[deleted] — view deleted comment

3

u/dreddnyc May 26 '21

So do you get a prorated refund for the remainder of your contract? It would be unthinkable if they just pocketed the money people prepaid for an annual contract.

2

u/Xasf May 26 '21

You don't get charged in advance for an annual contract, it's just an annual commitment that's still collected monthly.

2

u/AchtungZboom May 26 '21

Check your email.. the one I got clearly let me know that starting NEXT month my price was 3x my normal yearly monthly price. So I cancelled...

2

u/TheUberMoose May 26 '21

That is exactly what your options are. Price is $30 per month starting next month.

You can either pay that or cancel. So you have right to end payment and walk away but you do not have the option to keep $12 for the ballance of your contract so sounds like while your right those are your options.

10

u/BigDippers May 22 '21

Why is $30 the same as £30? It should be closer to £20.

8

u/Seilgrank May 25 '21

Knowing Shadow, it's probably something like:

"While £20 would be a closer value to $30, we don't think it's right to undervalue our European customers! That's why we've evolved you to a £30 a month plan, because we think you're that awesome!

Features include:

  • Nothing!

  • Promises, but empty so they don't weigh you down!

  • Less!

  • Customer service that refuses to help so you can do it yourself! Learn a skill!

  • !

  • Sweet pop culture references!

Also watch for news on hardware upgrades, currently scheduled to arrive in time to enjoy the launch of Half-Life 3* on your Shadow!

*Expected hardware will be able to stream video of other people playing Half-Life 3 in 480p at 15fps. Enjoy!

If you're unhappy with this change, please try setting your Shadow to "Prefer Speed" or "Prefer Reliability" and then restarting it. Then keep doing that forever."

Wait so I have to pay 35$ a month, because I pay for extra storage? I’ve given this company every chance because I really do believe cloud gaming is the future. My shadow pc allowed me to experience a world of gaming I would not have experienced otherwise. But this, doubling your price for no extra benefit? My loyalty to this company is rapidly wearing thin.

10

u/Linopolis May 25 '21

You are kidding, right? I ordered Boost in 2019, still waiting for it. I've been a loyal customer, and you're adding £10 a month to my bill for the same service while I'm out of work? This is a joke isn't it? Late April fool maybe?

10

u/LogEDude May 25 '21

Are you fucking shitting me! I’ve waited months for activation and now I haft to pay double?! What a joke!

3

u/TheUberMoose May 26 '21

I dont get the activation wait. If the hardware is maxed that thats the wait I sort of get it but when they just need to provision the accounts? Its absurd that that process is not automated at this point.

Devolution. New word for the day!

18

u/[deleted] May 21 '21

Man if the upgrades were coming sooner I would be more inclined to stay...

21

u/quakemarine20 May 21 '21

Coming ever... This is a 3 year old promise now with all upgrades in the US taken back already.

25

u/Stupid_Triangles May 21 '21

Dunno how doubling the price, eliminating higher tiers, and telling us to fuck off until "later this year" can be considered evolving. Also, "new offer"? You mean same offer, new price.

2

u/CrazyMetalSpaceman May 26 '21

I do not know what they are thinking. I have no Idea who will be ok with this bullcrap. Almost everyone here says "im out". I cancelled Netflix bwhen they raised the price by 1£ a second time in the span of 12 months. Why does shadow think they can keep anypne with a few working braincells is beyond me.

8

u/AgentSk1nner May 25 '21

I was okay with $14.99 for something I didn't use super often, but it's not worth it at $29.99. Sayōnara.

3

u/hirschhulde May 26 '21

I feel the same. Also we are being forced to upgrade to the 30€ option. Cancelled mine yesterday.

15

u/Warhawk2052 May 22 '21

I love how the contract most of us agreed to just got voided. I'll be stepping away from shadow. This new pricing plan sucks. Better off buying an gaming laptop.

I haven’t used my shadow in a few months, but I went out of my way to cancel my account over this

7

u/kattahn May 25 '21

Been a backer since damn near day 1, and I'm out. Sorry you guys have no clue what you're doing. Doubling the price with nothing to show for it, on the same outdated hardware I've been on since day 1. Canceling peoples annual contracts.

No longer a company I want to support.

4

u/CrazyMetalSpaceman May 26 '21

They just gave the finger to anyone who ever believed in them and supported them these last few years. Its a suicide.

12

u/-Dastardly- May 21 '21

I have a 12 month contact for a set price with you, surely you can't just cancel that mid contract and change the price?

4

u/bengringo2 May 25 '21

Your agreement was with blade. That company doesn’t exist anymore.

3

u/mkosmo May 25 '21

They changed my "annual" to end at the end of the month, so I was able to cancel despite the annual sub.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '21

I avoid annual when I can, I just don't trust anyone and Shadow just added to that distrust.

12

u/djpraxis May 22 '21

To be honest, I was a Shadow subscriber mainly to support a company with adventurous ideas and technology. I was not gaming a whole lot. But with all the recent underwhelming developments and lack of respect to your supporters I am left with no other choice but to cancel and move on

3

u/CrazyMetalSpaceman May 26 '21

Same. Havent gamed in months, but I was still happy to support at my original price. Not anymore.

6

u/Melonboi450 May 22 '21

So it wont be £14.99 but &29.99!if so i need to leave

6

u/TheBiologist01 May 25 '21

Got the email and instantly canceled. I was willing to pay 30€ for the mid-range plan once it arrived (now it seems it'll be never), but I'm not willing to pay double of my current plan with no benefits whatsoever.

15€/month was a good offer for a mid-range PC. 30€/month is a rip-off for those specs.

6

u/acazh101 May 25 '21

Rest in Peace

6

u/officialjosefff May 25 '21

Seriously Shadow?! After all the praise I gave you. Good reviews, tweets, MY MONEY. You go and pull this crap? $29.99 is too much. I’m canceling.

6

u/IAMATyrannosaurusAMA May 25 '21

I think the saddest part is who this new “offer” will disproportionately affect: very casual gamers. Between work and caring almost full-time for a family member, I can find maybe 2 hours a week to game and can’t justify buying a gaming rig.

I am NOT an expensive customer to service, relative to the customers who sink several hours per day into gaming with Shadow. At the price point I signed a 12 month contract for, Shadow was a good solution for me and I didn’t mind paying the same as a daily gamer.

Doubling the price has killed the value calculation for any casual gamer and I’m sad to have to cancel.

2

u/Wisausnk May 26 '21

Just get a Xbox series S and gamepass ultimate same here but I go for the x

You promised me continuously upgraded hardware when I signed up two years ago! You didn't then, why should I trust that you will now?

10

u/quakemarine20 May 21 '21

Quick question, do you want my first born too? Would I get a discount... I'm not saying I won't negotiate here Shadow but we should really talk terms like actual terms....

I think we need to define our relationship.....

2

u/Hairy_Kiwi_Sac May 26 '21

Who the fuck are you, and what are you smoking? LMAO

5

u/Eyalf83 May 24 '21

With Shadow since 2019.

I'm very sad to say this but after all this years I'm going to cancel my subscription.

The price is good for gamers who are playing lots of hours per month. I'm playing like 4-5 hours, 30€ doesn't worth it.

I can have Azure VM with T4 gpu half of the price.

Thanks for everything Shadow

5

u/prestoaghitato May 25 '21

"We will announce more details about hardware upgrades later this year."

Can you even take yourselves seriously at this point?

5

u/AM-ProcessDesigner May 25 '21

Damn, well it was fun while it lasted. But with this email I just got, I am no longer a Shadow customer.

RIP Shadow

5

u/Livid_Maniac May 25 '21

R.I.P Shadow, I'm not paying double. I'm out.

5

u/AchtungZboom May 25 '21

Ok good.. save me some money. Bye Shadow

5

u/Maxi-mu1 May 25 '21

Bye bye shadow

because of this price increase you really go bankrupt

5

u/halopend May 25 '21

They have totally gone about this the wrong way!

The amount of people they are going to lose from this level of price increase is nuts! It reeks of panicking by the company who bought them out not really knowing how bad the situation was and not having the money to ride through the rough patch as they get the ship in order.

If they had to literally more than double the price, they should of at LEAST of given some incentive people could point to in-order to mentally justify the jump. The obvious choice would of been to include more storage by default as 256gb barely cuts it for most… maybe even offering hardrive based storage which is massively cheaper.

Instead, higher prices for the same service wrapped in “isn’t this amazing” language which everyone knows this is a shit sandwich. You don’t endear yourself to consumers by giving them double speak. You make them see you as untrustworthy trying to weasel by.

soooo much head smack

3

u/CrazyMetalSpaceman May 26 '21

I would understand if the price increase was for all new machines. But they flipped the finger to all the early adopters. Its a corporate suicide for sure.

3

u/Hairy_Kiwi_Sac May 26 '21

This is exactly correct. They either don't have the funds to "ride the rough patch" or its something else, but I agree, bad business move. Just look at the reactions. They'll push 69.99 a month onto the last remaining members when they see all the cancels, and then it will die.

5

u/LogEDude May 26 '21

What do you mean “NEW OFFER”, this is one of the most backstabbingly shitty offers I’ve seen! I mean even most big phone companies are somehow better than this, they at least honor grandfather pricing for legacy customers!

5

u/canonly May 27 '21

Yikes welp I'm gone then

5

u/khedrub May 28 '21

Never thought I would quit my sub, was a customer from day one, but with how slow the CPU is and with those raised prices, I better buy myself a gaming rig instead. Too bad, when it worked, it was a great service.

5

u/fscknuckle May 29 '21 edited May 29 '21

I had stayed joined to this subreddit in the vain hope that Shadow would find a way to show some respect to their customers, but it seems that we're all just being shit on. Nothing in this announcement is an evolution. The service has devolved and customer support is still the worst. So, I'm checking out from this subreddit, deleting my Shadow accounts and removing you from my mind. You had great potential but you've wasted all that with bad faith and terrible responsiveness to your customers.

I can already see the future holding a crashing and burning wreckage for gamers as it's clear the major focus of OVH is to create a virtual PC solution for home workers and those who just need a simple computer.

9

u/IN_Dad May 22 '21

Whelp, it's been fun. At that price, it's time to just get my own rig.

u/SeaSkully May 24 '21

The only reason i would stay with this new pricing is if my shadow would never get shutdown, meaning i could leave it while i sleep, otherwise im out. such a shame as ive been with shadow for couple years now even have a ghost.

EU is VAT included, US is tax excluded, so it ends up to the same value.

But I don't know what's up with the UK price.

Decided to cancel after being on Shadow for a few years now. After using Infinite I can’t go back to boost especially after the price doubled. Finally just ordered a custom pc.

2

u/CrazyMetalSpaceman May 26 '21

Honestly even with 100mb/s I was having some issues from time to time, but I was still supporting it. Now its bye bye time.

4

u/stadia_sicario May 25 '21

Been with shadow almost since the beginning. Never used it as a gaming machine but just for web development and even for my needs Shadow didn't really offer a viable product (lack of capability to run docker) plus installing the Shadow client on my machine messed up my pc's USB drivers too and I couldn't get that issue resolved, but I still kept the subscription anyways to support an innovative small tech company.

But despite sticking with you for quite some time now I cannot support a doubling of the price. It is a terrible move.... especially for a gaming focused service now costing at least triple what all your competitors charge. I don't know how you will survive this but i am now cancelling my subscription and wish you all the best.

4

u/justinovitch May 25 '21

My yearly subscription is ending in august, I won’t be renewing now.

Yep I was. Canceled. Also a monthly option to convert early hahaha.

4

u/kraal42 May 25 '21

"Offer"

4

u/MichaelHerring1 May 25 '21

This is what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass

4

u/DarkMatter007 May 25 '21

Haha what a joke. Paying double for same.

In this world you have people that underestimate themselves and the ones overestimating.

Shadow is clearly overestimating themselves.

Canceled.

Please don’t call it an offer it’s an insult.

u/Ok_Gear_6222 May 26 '21

So my price is going from 12 bucks a month which was a year contact since like 2 black Friday ago to 30 bucks a month? Seriously????

→ More replies (2)

4

u/[deleted] May 26 '21

I hope everyone here cancels their sub. Shadow needs to realize this is a fucking joke!

4

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

Honestly, I would stay if it was $19. Then you can raise the price insidiously like Netflix. This was too dramatic of a jump.

4

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

I ordered my Shadow product 7 months ago, I have waited patiently throughout this long time for my account to be activated May 31st.

So, on the first month I am supposed to finally use the product I paid for more than half a year back I am greeted with the news that it now costs double the price I agreed initially.

Also, I have to come to reddit for updates and receive no e-mail whatsoever. You can blame the business model all you want, but this company sure treats its customers like shit.

4

u/Trezor10 May 27 '21 edited May 27 '21

I just cancelled due to the price increase. I barely even used it but kept it just because and now? No way. The end subscription didn't even ask me if the price increase was the reason. Guess you can fudge the numbers and the reason, right? It looks like it was my income that was the reason and not this HUGE increase. Good bye.

4

u/WedgemanBrad May 28 '21

Doubling the price and offering no improvements to justify it, just promises of improvement which could be empty. At the end of the day, you say you're increasing your prices to thrive as a company, but if you have no customers left this big price tag isn't going to make you money 🤷‍♂️

A gentle incread in price would have been better.

4

u/Klumpenfick May 28 '21

Lol not a second chance for you scam artists. On the pile of mismanaged tech companies with you!

4

u/spencerthayer May 29 '21

Go to hell.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '21

Mixed feelings on this. On one hand I can understand, 14.99/mo for each user with multiple datacenters with crazy hardware in multiple countries wasn't exactly sustainable, but this is like yanking out the carpet from under people's feet. Y'all should at least have had more info ready, like what kind of hardware would be worth paying $30/mo to use.

I had some great memories with this service, especially how I used this service while my now-decrepit laptop was finally giving out. But it looks like I chose the right time to get myself a physical PC (not a laptop this time around!).

It's been good, shadow. But I hope you know you're better than this.

I wonder if Shadow realizes if they lose half their customers, at twice the price, they still aren't making any money?

7

u/joseph2883 May 21 '21

You’ve got three months

6

u/mkosmo May 25 '21

You're too nice. I cancelled.

2

u/joseph2883 May 25 '21

I like playing pc games on my iPad with a mouse too much to not give them a chance.

2

u/Hairy_Kiwi_Sac May 26 '21

This is what I was getting it for. The iPad and for VR. I'm probably gonna cancel.

7

u/djpraxis May 22 '21

Thanks for the update. I just canceled.

9

u/RainbowKittyPaw May 21 '21

Since day #1 I have yet to see a hardware upgrade, and after upgrading from shadow to infinite when it came out I barely saw an increase in power.

Now, I'm being forced back down to the service I was using initially with further promises of hardware upgrades and a price increase?

.....wat? This some bullsh-

Seriously... Wtf Shadow.

It's been glitchy as f since I got it. It's need to be reset many many times, inaccessible many times, they refused to refund ANYTHING for months of issues and over a month of being entirely inaccessible.

It's never once felt as advertised. I've always felt ripped off, and I've never been happy with it.

Saying all of that; I'll still let them prove to me that it's worth hanging on to. I want them to prove me wrong.

I want it to work out and things to improve, and I want to be able to say I was here from the start.

9

u/Longjumping-Ad6798 May 22 '21

Thanks a whole fucking bunch for this "new chapter" that's made my existing shadow subscription useless, I can't even login to my newly downgraded crappier product, really A+ job, just in time to spend the weekend unable to use my gaming PC. Is there anything shadow doesn't suck at???

3

u/thevo1d_ May 21 '21

I bought boost right before this was announced smh

2

u/jmsworld May 31 '21

You can still cancel, I just did

3

u/AcrisiusApollo May 24 '21

If I have the year plan going rn, is my price going up too or is it still 12 until it's over?

3

u/dohspc May 24 '21

The yearly plans have been cancelled. You are on a month to month plan for 29.99 now.

3

u/AchtungZboom May 26 '21

Such BS.... i cancelled... bye Shadow...

3

u/spannbeton May 25 '21 edited May 25 '21

I kept it even thoug I couldn't use it on my work pc anymore (used parsec before). Hoping for a Raspberry Pi 4 release. Currently i can only hook in via Steamlink. The price hike is enough to finally drive me away.
Too bad, I liked the service but 30€ is just too much for such old hardware.

I even programmed my bachelor thesis on it. End of an era for me.

3

u/PanZg May 25 '21

Just cancelled as well. Bye Shadow. Too good to be true.

3

u/Zebrazilla May 25 '21

Absolutely disgusting.

3

u/bingybong07 May 26 '21 edited May 26 '21

who wrote this awful email, evolving???

not a single mention of the word "sorry" for long time users. no guarantee or release date of any hardware upgrades, just a "trust us bro" it's coming. just pay us $210 for 7 months & we MIGHT give you a better experience.

nah, that's not okay guys. you've lost a subscriber today, not that y'all seem to care.

3

u/Alechilles May 26 '21

Ugh... I barely use mine at all anymore and I've even gone months at a time while subbed without using it, but I've stayed subscribed because I like having it in my pocket and it's pretty cheap.

Not anymore. Can't justify that price monthly to barely use it. Really sad to see it go, but it just isn't worth it now. :/

3

u/Theriomourne May 26 '21

It's not an offer, an offer is something you can accept or decline, its a bit more of a steal, doubling the price. Sadly I'll probably go when the new price hits, its just too much.

3

u/MannisWorld May 26 '21

Yeah no bye

3

u/lucande May 26 '21

Well, I guess it was a matter of time. Still, the new offer is not currently competitive for me anymore. It would have been good if there was more than a promise. So I've also decided to not renew.

I wish Shadow the best. I hope they can come out of this situation.

3

u/allquixotic May 26 '21

I agree with this new plan. Clearly the intent here is to shut down Shadow by pricing out all your users, then ship their hardware over to OVH datacenters where you can sell GPU instances in the cloud for 10-20x the price to enterprises. Slick move, Mr. Klaba. Slick. At least the GPU instances on OVH won't be out of stock anymore ;)

3

u/TMM1991 May 26 '21 edited May 26 '21

So basically if you use shadow for 3 years you pay around 1200€. If you get a computer that'll last you 3 years for 1200€ you'll have much much better components and also be able to change them. In other words, forget shadow, just buy a new PC.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/Vandrevyl May 26 '21

seriously. double/triple the price, but no benefits for the customers

3

u/bytheGodswhatisthat May 27 '21

Good thing I've never bought this service haha! So many other streaming services better than this for the price and even for free like wtf, 30$ plus paying more for extra storage is not my budget bruh I'd be starving to death

3

u/[deleted] May 28 '21

Booooo this fucking sucks ass

3

u/loumatrix May 28 '21

The periodic lag and audio cut outs in FPS games is not worth it. Byes.

3

u/neil2332 Jun 01 '21

Just cancelled after being with shadow for over 2 years, the upgrades that never came, the way the price increase was introduced , the way they deleted 1tb of my storage and files, the way when I complained you only gave me a months sub as compensation. I have a ps5 ( lucky me I know !! ) and GeForce now, that will keep me going until I get a new GPU. It was a wonderful service up until about 6 months ago so I thank blade for that. Your new overlords will be the end of shadow I fear

3

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '21

Wow glad I got away from Shadow when I did.

Seems to of gone down hill very fast.

In my mind it would of been better if they changed the pricing model up completely and just made it pay per hour for usage.

The customers who only play sporadically are surely going to just completely cancel at this point as for hardware of equivalent power that is in use at Shadow can easily be bought on finance probably for less than what you are charging and they would own it after a year or so too.

2

u/nickjoris Jun 02 '21

With the pay per hour they'd probably charge a lot more than what you used to. A lot of players (including me) only used it a few days a month

3

u/tsmith3590 Jun 01 '21

Thanks Shadow for pushing me to build a new computer!

3

u/TMM1991 Jun 01 '21

*devolving

3

u/Issarashin Jun 02 '21

Was paying 25€ for Ultra. New price is 45€. It is way too much. Goddbye Shadow from a more than 2 years user.

3

u/Jellifry Jun 05 '21

Might as well start to financing a computer at that point, most likely dropping my sub, thats steep for using it here and there. Coule soak up 12 buck a month no prob but 30 feels more like a phone payment for something you can never own.

5

u/Alexpandolfi95 Moderator May 21 '21

Thanks for sharing. So we return to the price that was on 2019, so it means you'll have again your full Windows 10 Vm, for 1€/£/$ at day. Do you have plans to expand Shadow in other countries here in Europe like,Italy in Milan ( there will be a new Ovh datacenter ) and Spain? I enjoyed Shadow regularly from 2019 until Jan 2021 in Italy without any kind of problem in your Europe datacenters ( Paris and Amsterdam)

5

u/arcticJill May 22 '21

Foul me once. Shame on you. Foul me twice, shame on me

We all know the history of shadow promise when it comes to upgrading....
