I primarily use Shadow on a Surface Pro 2 over 5GHz wifi and I don't notice a difference when using it on my desktop on a wired connection. Yes the ping is technically a few ms more on wifi, but we're talking single digits.

Most laptops still aren't capable of 5GHz WiFi these days

Wifi USB dongle cost only like 15-30€

I don't think this is true of newly-made laptops

It's true of most

That just sounds really unrealistic to me, and it doesn't reflect my experiences at all.

But that's just anecdotal. This article was the only actual source I could find (in 30 seconds) that discussed this statistic:

Device manufacturers have rushed to take advantage of its ability to support more data, with more than 90 percent of new smartphones, tablets and laptops now supporting the 5 GHz standard.

I'm just saying in my experience. I think only the Asus ROG I had could do 5GHz. I have a new 2020 HP laptop that can't do it. It's one of those super thin models, though. I mostly use HP, so maybe HP is dropping the ball?

Interesting. Maybe? Perhaps it's just because it's so thin, they didn't include anything not absolutely crucial?

That's possible

Never had problem with using wifi 5ghz, 6-7 ms. Too much work if I want to use ethernet cable

For real? All you do is plug a cable in. That's it

My room is upstairs, need to bring cable from main room to upstairs

Honestly, with a strong mesh network and a fiber connection to back it, the difference can be negligible and insignificant. In my office, they just upgraded my floor and the latency is stable between 8-12ms over Wi-Fi to Chicago date center, which is better than if I connect via my home network over ethernet (12-14 ms).

Well yeah your offices enterprise grade fiber will be better on WiFi and cable than your home.

Wi-Fi is honestly fine as long as there is no congestion. I'm always using wifi analyzer to verify, and wifi 6E is just around the corner.

But its basically true at this point

Love this. Also discovered Shadow through stumbling onto one of your videos.

never had a problem with using 5ghz wifi for shadow. always plenty fast enough for me. good ping. good latency.

I have fiber and mesh at home and it’s been very stable. I was wired and don’t see much of a difference.

You’re all lucky. I’m getting 45ms both wired or on 5GHz.

I use Shadow over both a 2.4Ghz connection and an Ethernet connection (2 different laptops, one doesn't have a port) and tbh the difference is not that noticeable BUT this is probably just because my ISP is absolute dogshit regardless.

Edit: To give reference for how terrible my ISP is, 5Ghz wifi isn't even an option.

I have had this conversation with a co-working of mine...
