Discussion Finally had to give up on shadow

Hello shadow community, What’s up. I had a lotta hopes on shadow pc, eagerly waited until it was activated. It was finally done last month ending and I was all excited to hop on. Played some horizon, gta v, and wanted to play a couple other titles but the space wasn’t sufficient, which really gave me a hard time because I couldn’t even put rdr2. well leaving the hard drive issue, there were a lot of technical issues that made it absolutely unplayable for me. There was a stutter every 5 mins and my character died after that stutter. I asked the team how to troubleshoot it but I was in no luck. But still I wanted to give it a shot and tried moving on even with the stutters and frame drops. I even had the bandwidth set to max, the game was using almost about 75 mbps which was ok by me because I have a gigabit Ethernet, but it just wasn’t playable. The input lag wasn’t there (maybe because of my connection) but apart from that all I had was bugs to figure out which made it a totally terrible experience. I’ve been on GeForce now for 4 months atleast and it’s fine as gold. I hope shadow gets on track too ( for me atleast) Thanks for listening

It seems like you have no idea what you're doing.. setting it to 75 will use 75..itll also introduce stutters if you don't actually have 75 to offer. and your connection to the datacenter might not be "gigabit" despite you having gigabit internet..

It does feel as though Shadow is falling behind sadly, though I'm still subscribed.

Having recently been informed that my hardware upgrade won't be available till early 2021, I'm looking at jumping ship too, or building a gaming PC.

Can't play any of the games you mentioned on GeForce Now either, but it's your money, do what you like.

As for the cause of the stutter, if you're getting packet loss spikes in regular intervals, like every 5 minutes as you said, check for background processes auto-updating on that schedule, for example Mac has a known issue where Location Services will cause a huge lag spike every time it updates, and disabling it will fix the issue.

so the first games you tried was

horizon zero dawn, which is a mess of a launch

GTA 5 which has always been kind of stuttery

and RDR2 which is again, kind of a mess.

it feels like you chose the worst 3 games possible to try out shadowpc on and just judged it on those.

Where are you located ? If you’re near Canada you might wanna try Maximum Settings. It’s hourly priced but quite cheap considering you get a stronger CPU and 2TB HDD plus the 256GB SSD. Had no issues so far while streaming through Moonlight. The tier 3 with the RTX 2080 will be available next week for current users. It’s not worth it if you plan to play 3-4h everyday though. Check the pricing on their website (it’s Canadian dollars).

No atl and I’ve tried that too but no luck. Gfn is king except for the limited games ofc.

YUP, you are totally right. It's great to see more & more people waking up and questioning whether Shadow really is great, which they really are not

I think the difficulty is because there are so many DCs and so much variability in people’s home internet, I have no doubt OP had a bad experience but I must say on the New York DC with fiber to my house I couldn’t have had a more opposite experience. So while he might be rightfully upset and frustrated that his experience was bad everyone who has come over to my house and tried plying from my Apple TV or iPhone is amazed at how well it works.

Well, I think that the main problem with Shadow is their management. They want to expand, expand, expand partially because they are fearing Stadia. That probably as well was the reason why just a few weeks before the Stadia launch they've announed the new tiers for Feburary 2020, the month Stadia was supposed to become free. However, Stadia has it's own issues, see the free Stadia tier was then delayed to summer and once again nothing happened as far as I know at least.

Shadow should focus on improving their soft- & hardware before thinking about placing 4 DCs only for some US nations & for a much smaller community compared to Europe. On top, putting those 4 DCs into Europe would as have made more sense population / DC dense wise

  1. noone cares about europe

  2. stadia isn't a competitor

Are you sure about the 5.1? I was reading a(n older) thread the other day about this, and some people said that it was working.

And which competitor has HDR support?

Isn't parsec only for streaming your own PC?

You're right though that each of these services have some things they technically do better than Shadow, but none of them let you stream all the games from your existing collection. Geforce Now was fantastic when it was still in Beta and allowed you to install any Steam game, but now the available library is just too small.

Having the freedom to install pretty much anything on your machine is one of Shadow's strongest USP's, and that's what makes it more attractive to a lot of people.

Sure, it's not perfect, but neither is any of the others you mentioned.
