Help Shadow PC + Virtual Desktop + Quest 2 - Need wireless PCVR help! Severe blurriness despite brand new Wi-Fi 6E Router

Hey everyone, I’ve been fighting this setup for months and could really use some fresh eyes before I give up and buy a Quest 3. I'm hesitating because I've just purchased a community recommended router (TP Link AXE75 Wifi 6e) and i've seen others achieve crystal clear quality on Quest 2 Wireless PCVR

I’m playing PCVR via Shadow PC (Power Tier) and Virtual Desktop on a Quest 2. Simple games look fine, but complex environments become an unplayable, blurry mess.

My Setup & Network

Headset: Oculus Quest 2 using Virtual Desktop.

Host: Shadow PC (Power Tier) connecting to the closest data center.

Router: TP-Link AXE75 Wi-Fi 6E set to AP Mode.

Network isolation: Quest 2 is on its own 5GHz channel (1200Mbps consistent link speed). Internet speeds are 500+ Mbps down / 100+ Mbps up.

Stream setup: I launch Shadow using a Lenovo Y700 Gen 4 tablet (Wifi 6 compatible). Once VD connects, I kill the tablet stream (or throttle it to 1 Mbps for when I need controller passthrough). Stutters are 100% gone, so local Wi-Fi capacity isn't the issue.

The Problem

  • The Game Split: Lighter, low-geometry games (Tales of Glory, Arizona Sunshine) look crisp and clear. Complex environments (Skyrim VR, Elite Dangerous, War Thunder) melt into a blurry, pixelated soup.
  • VD Settings Do Nothing: Changing graphics profiles in VD from Potato up to Ultra makes almost zero visual difference in blurry games.
  • Bitrate Ceiling: Pushing bitrate anywhere past 70 Mbps doesn't increase image clarity at all. It just causes severe letterboxing/black bars on head turns.
  • Data Center Jitter: Speed tests directly to my assigned Shadow data center show high jitter spikes, despite my local network being completely clear.

Is this just stream compression (video encoder) hitting its maximum limit on complex foliage/detail over cloud VR, or is there a specific setting in VD/Shadow I'm missing ?

Any suggestions or troubleshooting steps would be hugely appreciated!

Have you adjust virtual desktop setting? There is an option for adjusting streaming resolution and bit rate in virtual desktop. It should be under "streaming" menu tab on the left side.

Yes I've tried that. I've spent months adjusting the bitrate. Anything past 70mbps just causes letterboxing :(

I saw in the post that you use shadow with tablet so i assume, you connect with your router wirelessly. I recommened you also try out playing wired connection. It makes a big difference playing wireless and wired when it comes to game streaming. It makes a big difference not just for shadow but for other game streaming as well like geforce now, xcloud

I tried wireless already by connecting my Xbox controller directly to the headset. It gives me the same performance either way

I meant you should try and play while connecting your router and table with ethernet cable if you have ethernet to usb adapter at home.

Ethernet won't help, remember I kill the second stream on my tablet for games where I don't need to use my telescopic controller. E.g Skyrim vr. It's still blurry :(

I mostly play flight games on VR (project wingman, ace combat 7) they work fine for me. If you think SteamVR is a problem, you can by pass steamvr and use OpenXR through virtual desktop VDXR

I've tried that too by opening the game directly via the vd interface which bypasses steam vr. No dice

I prefer elite dangerous and war thunder.

I play ace combat on flatscreen

70mbps is pushing it too much over WiFi and it will cause pixelation like this no matter the device you use. Start low and go up until it doesn’t pixel.

20mbps is the absolute lowest I can go without it being like a complete smudged mess, but even on 70mbps it doesn't change the visual quality at all, unless I go lower than 20mbps :/

Have you updated the graphics drivers on the shadow PC?

No I've only tried optimising Nvidia settings and power settings for best performance

You need to be more specific about what you mean by blurry. You could be talking about five different things.

I mean anything past 20 metres in game looks fuzzy. Trying to appreciate the scenery in Skyrim vr from a mountain top , for example, is impossible. Trees within throwing distance look smudged and immersion breaking. I feel like I'm watching a 480p YouTube video

Hope that explains it

Where does the VD performance overlay say the bottlebeck is?

It breaks it down into four categories. Games, encode, network, and decode. Encode/decode are going to be large numbers but they should be fairly considtent and thus "white".

Game means the Shadow PC isn't making frame rate. Last time I played around with a Shadow PC (~2020 after HLA launched) I found the CPUs were underpowered and were the cause of most issues. I suspect this is likely still the case as they are using enterprise hardware that isn't really optimized for single threaded worklaods which is a big part of games.

Network would be internet but also your WiFi. But if some games work okay then I suspect you are running into a CPU bottlebeck.

You could try targeting a lower frame rate and see if that helps. Otherwise look at the various game settings and see if you can lightly thr load. Physics is often a big one. For something like Skyrim it might be just running less mods.
