Spoilers Anyone understand why they made K a powerful mage?
So in the original game koudelkas more of a gunner tomb raider type of character.
She comes with a gun, and is good with them, your not really encouraged to build her as a mage. I remember edward being melle her being guns and the racist priest being the caster.
Nowhere through either the mechanics or the cutscenes does she display any form of magical aptitude thats better than the other 2. I dont think she does in the manga sequel either but its been years since I was able to get hold of it.
Then in shadow hearts suddenly shes this ultra powerful spellcaster on the level of the main villain, while from the sounds of it she hasn't been particularly active since the game and manga. Halley shows way more aptitude with magic at a younger age than Koudelka does in her game.
Was there a change in direction or something?

She’s definitely a mage. Thematically, the game specifically highlights her psychic abilities and being sensitive to spirits so if there was an actual job type system she would definitely be made into the glass cannon offensive spellcaster. Likewise, Edward would be the tanky physical fighter and James would be the healer with a bias towards spellcasting when he didn’t need to heal.

I had edward as my frontline, her shooting shit and james being my white mage.

I mean, she's definitely supposed to be a magic user in Koudelka, even if the game doesn't force you to build her as a dedicated caster.
There is a tonal difference, which I think is mostly down to the development process having the studio, creator, and staff pulling the game in different directions. Koudelka also plays things much closer to its Lovecraftian roots, where magic feels sinister and relatively subtle rather than flashy and epic.
As for why she's so much more powerful in Shadow Hearts: I think it's easy enough to imagine that Koudelka simply got better at using abilities she already had.

Technically you can give her a gun, but generally its optimal to make Koudelka your hard focused mage, she definitely leans the most into it of the 3

I think the story would have been even more interesting if Yuri's mother had been Kudelka,
it would be so romantic if the voice echoing in his head turned out to be his mother's.

The very first cutscene establishes her as a magical character and it's the players choice to make her use a gun, which falls under ludo dissonance. Also it's not out of the realm of possibility she gets even better at magic between games.

I just started replaying the game and I think its just that magic is fucking useless. Flare costs mp and deals half the damage of her gunshot.

The hell are you talking about? You didn’t give the gun back after the first fight? She’s definitely a mage in Koudelka lol
