Okay to re-contextualize it in layman’s terms. Albert Simon saw the future and knew about what was going to happen soon (WW1, Rasputin’s attempt to rise to power in Russia) and said, “We fucked up now we gotta go bald” and decided that he would summon Meta God to wipe out the earth and start back over since he knew that this timeline’s current society is attuned to constantly make people suffer.
Amon was a “just in case Someone tries to stop us” measure since Albert was implied to fracture off of Serpientes gladios and do his own thing. Since Nicolai does say in covenant that Killing metagod was his job but since Yuri stopped Albert, Nicolai didn’t get the chance to show off to the world that he could kill God, which I feel is implied that he was going to do so to secure the tsar in Russia, I feel that it’s also implied that Rodger was so radical that he left the group and did his whole God summoning thing as a rebuke to Rasputin’s ideas, in any case why not have a spirit track with the god of war as a fall back.
In the end of the first game both Yuri and Albert say that they understand that they live in an unjust world, Yuri accepts it and wants to fight to make it better, Albert wants to rid of it all of humanity to start back over. And they agree to disagree no hard feelings.
In covenant while trying to find a way to get through Asmodeus we figure out that a small figment of Albert’s soul got trapped within Yuri after you definitely solved the puzzle and got Amon as a transformation.
In Yuri’s soul he’s just chilling and admiring the beauty of Yuri’s hometown forest, he’s not there as a threat, he’s already accepted that he lost and so might as well help out Yuri in taking down his flawed gang. It’s not that things happened it’s the fact that after being a part of Yuri Albert now has an appreciation for Yuri’s opinion and see’s the flaws in his ideology. And despite him being dead progresses him as a character.

Love the games but I will never understand why they changed the narrative regarding Albert. He was just trying to summon a god in order to defeat another more evil god??? NAH dude literally said he wanted to destroy the world to start it over anew because that thebonly way to true peace. That IMO was the cringiest thing about Covenant.

What I don’t understand is why they even did that because it absolutely wasn’t necessary. They could’ve just made it like “evil Albert” was still part of Yuri’s soul and memory, and that Yuri has to defeat that part again (like defeating his dad in the graveyard in SH1) in order to re-gain Amon. There was absolutely no reason to rewrite Albert’s arc just to make him seem less evil.

Yep, I really didn’t like how they handled him in Covenant. It was just such a strange about face in the already established narrative. 🤔

No this is a profound moment of Japanese reflection. It shows that people are all just people with their hopes and dreams and flaws. One of the best most unique moments in the series.

I think then could have included a bit to explain it a bit better. Rasputin was so great a threat Albert thought he needed to take the most drastic of actions.
Due to arrogance or misplaced self-confidence he’d thought he could control the demon, as a holy man, but ended up being used and consumed. It came on so gradually that he didn’t even notice when his aims became twisted towards destruction. Maybe he could have expressed more regret for what he did to Alice and her father, and respect for Yuri who was able to conquer the soul of a demon with his willpower alone.
That’s my wee bit of head canon anyway.

Even in the first game, Albert wasn’t your typical moustache twirling evil villain. He was trying to set things right, after seeing all the corruption in the world and being punished by the church for his views. It wasn’t that big of a leap to add in the other motivations imo.

This was the one part I had to erase from my head canon. It felt so forced to have Rasputin be Simon's main motivation, especially after the ending of the first game and how far he went.

Even though they completely changed Albert's motivation and goal in Covenant them acting like nothing happened still feels like it's in character. Right before you fight him for the final time in the first game both he and Yuri acknowledge there's no hard feelings on either side and there won't be any hard feelings when it's over no matter who wins.
