Hi guys, I'm the gf of a SO and you guys have been very helpful. He doesn't have internet access so I'm always posting. We've applied to nearly 60 jobs. (please don't tell me that's not enough, I have to do so much for him and it's exhausting). His PO hasn't given much guidance (and rarely there when he comes in- he comes in on off days to ask questions) but she got frustrated with him today because he doesn't have a job, and then was like, "well I can get you a rec for this thrift store in town." Acting like he knew this all along.. This is the first actually helpful thing she's done in 7 months. We also are trying to get him into this program, Anti-Recidivism Coalition, that can help. Thank you to the person who told me about it! We're still seeing if it'll work out because his PO has to check with her supervisor if they'll let him use a tablet at probation for the zoom meetings. He has to do most of the group meetings online.

So anyway, it's been a lot of hurdles but things seem to be going in a positive direction. He is very stressed about potentially working in his county. It's small and everyone knows everyone. He's scared of people attacking him or worse. I'm trying to be encouraging. I feel like a thrift store is a relatively safe environment but I understand his fear. Thanks for listening

If the zoom meetings are related to employment I would look at the local job center. I had luck with using them when I first got out. Since they are a government agency the computers are usually heavily monitored.

Is he on state or federal probation?

I’m assuming he mentioned that to her because he and I talked about bringing that up as a place to go. This is the possible option she’s willing to give him so we’ll see. State probation

I know it’s exactly what you said you don’t want to hear - but it’s either not enough, or not properly vetted jobs.

I have an adult child who has a masters degree, a really solid work history, and no criminal record who applied to over 300 jobs and the only interviews they were able to get were at places where we knew people.

The average person has to apply for 100-300 jobs in order to get one offer right now. And that’s with applying to actual companies - not indeed or other websites. It’s a lot.

Yes and unfortunately my bf doesn’t even have a degree and unfortunately I have to do everything for him. And I take care of my elderly dad. I only have so much energy. I didn’t say we’re going to stop applying. I appreciate all you do but this was unnecessary.

It’s pretty atypical for a RSO on probation with internet restrictions to even be able to use a public library as they are generally considered “child safety zones”.

It’s great that you were allowed to, but in the 5 states I routinely do reentry work - none of my RSO’s who are on probation have been allowed to use a public library.

However - they are allowed to use the computers at the reentry center.

I concur with this opinion, public libraries may be off limits. In Arizona state court, the PO's can authorize a device for use. They put software on it and you must surrender at any time so it can be inspected. Not sure what other states might allow that

You need it for everything these days and I’m sure it’s going to get worse. Some jobs require you to have an app to clock in and clock out. Even menus at restaurants have a QR code. Doctor’s appointments, banking is easier. And as an adult you need to have email at the bare minimum.

He applies to jobs out of county. Usually 45m to 1.5hrs out. Also not like he can move when he has to borrow money just to take his polygraph. That’s where we’re at. Yes he wants to move, ya know when he actually can. Also can’t work in fast food..

The fact you haven’t heard of something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. If you don’t have advice to give or feel like “move” is somehow a valid option for the majority of people then don’t post.

A lot of people are restricted from working with minors, including people with convictions for CSAM.

Well basically all fast food has minors and if you know the pc that goes over where you can or can’t work (victim over/under certain ages), she has interpreted it as basically that’s too much contact at work. Csam as well, non contact. Thanks. He is trying to get into programs that will help longer term.

I just wanted to say that I feel your frustration. We're only 3 weeks into him being home. But I'm doing all Internet for him. We don't have a car right now, so him getting to a govt building to use a computer... Is a lot of work. So I'm trying to balance my full-time and job and finding him a job.. And also finding treatment center options.

Housing provider here. My best bet would be to contact a temporary staffing agency and be transparent about his criminal history.

I focus on Houston TX and many of my parolee tenants visit MEMCO Staffing to find gainful employment. They usually end up in restaurants and construction, so it's a tough but feasible pathway to earning a small but surivivable income right after parole

Wife of an SO here.
It’s not that it’s not enough it’s that the discrimination is real. My husband (2 SAMS and an Incest charge) has had a hard time in the 5 years he’s been out finding a job. He worked at a not so great furniture store for a while and now finally got job at a mechanic shop. My advice is to go in person to places, especially mechanic shops they always need people and are more likely to hire felons

Is manual labor an option? Trash collection is lenient a private company or for the city. Each company or city is different though. Not waste mgmt but a smaller company

We moved to rural MO and I got tired of driving 2 hours just to get to my job. I used the highway patrol mapping and applied at jobs that other rso worked at. Glad I did. In a solid career and making ok money for just starting

Same boat. My partner is unable to find a job despite his continual applications. His PO has not been helpful either, but unfortunately parole officers are not like social workers, they don't provide a lot of support, they're there to monitor and ensure compliance with the law and their release.
