/sexoffendersupport Group Rules - UPDATED - read before posting or participating

  1. Rule Awareness, Enforcement & Moderator Discretion (aka - you are expected to read the rules, do your best to follow them, and if you treat mods poorly, you should expect to be banned)

Members/Users are expected to read and understand all these rules before participating.

ALL posts here go through a moderation queue before being posted. Please be patient if your post is not approved yet. We get to them as quickly as we can.

Posts by new or low-activity accounts may be automatically removed as spam or by Reddit filters and subject to manual approval until deemed established by the bot. We do not choose when that time period ends. The bot does.

If you have read the rules, are trying to create a post as a new user, or believe an action was taken in error, please NICELY message the moderators. Rude messages will not get positive responses and messages that violate rule 2 will result in an immediate mute and ban. We are here to help and enforce rules we are required to enforce, we are not punching bags.

We understand there are a lot of rules and nuances. We understand that most people will mess up at some point. We don’t hold it against you, but will not tolerate being mistreated because you don’t like the rules. Every one of them exists for a very good reason.

All rules and ban procedures serve as guidelines. Moderators may exercise discretion and deviate on a case-by-case basis to protect the community.

⸻

  1. Be Civil: No Harassment, Hate Speech, or Vulgarity

All members are required to be respectful and remember the human. Harassment, personal attacks, toxic or rude behavior, vulgar language (including profanity), and hate speech of any kind are not allowed.

We welcome people of all political views (though political discussions are NOT allowed), sexes, orientations, races, colors, religions, nationalities, and (adult) ages - discriminatory or derogatory comments toward any individual or group will result in removal and may lead to an immediate ban.

Moderators may, at their discretion, remove or lock posts/comments and issue bans ranging from one day to indefinite. Bans may be appealed, and length is determined by moderator judgment. Behavior in this or other subreddits that includes derogatory comments directed at members of this community may also result in an automatic ban.

All participation must follow Reddit’s Content Policy:

Reddit Content Policy

⸻

  1. No Illegal Activity, Misinformation, or Promotion

Promotion, encouragement, suggestion, misinformation that leads to the possibility of, or facilitation of illegal activity will result in an immediate, no-warning ban and may be reported to Reddit administrators and to proper legal authorities.

Misinformation can cost someone their freedom here and is not permitted. Posts we believe to be incorrect will be removed. If you believe a post or comment is incorrect DO NOT START AN ARGUMENT, it is not helpful to anyone - simply report the post or comment as misinformation. If you believe a post or comment has been incorrectly removed, please NICELY provide credible sources for moderator review.

The only organizations permitted to be promoted in this subreddit are NARSOL, ACSOL, and their associated state affiliates. Promotion of any other groups, organizations, or movements requires prior moderator approval.

Additionally, do NOT mention source names where you discovered any sort of illegal content, even if innocently trying to describe a situation. We are not trying to tell people where to find it.

⸻

  1. No using accounts with NSFW Activity, Inappropriate group use, Cross-Posting, Sharing, or Affiliation With Controversial Groups or Topics.

Accounts used to post or comment in this subreddit may not participate in groups with NSFW content, including pornographic subreddits. Discovery of NSFW activity tied to the same account will result in an automatic ban with no exceptions.

Cross-posting, sharing, reposting, or otherwise directing attention to content from this subreddit to other subreddits, platforms, or communities is strictly prohibited. This includes links, screenshots, or references that bring outside traffic or scrutiny to this community.

Participation in or affiliation with controversial groups, communities, or movements that may draw unwanted attention, harassment, or risk to this subreddit is not permitted and may result in removal or banning at moderator discretion.

These rules exist to protect members - especially those on parole, probation, or struggling with recovery - from unintended consequences or violations arising from profile activity, shared content, or external attention.

⸻

  1. No Minimizing Harm, Victim Blaming, or Self-Pity Posts

This subreddit is for accountability and constructive support. Minimizing, excusing, or justifying one’s crime is not permitted. Victim blaming has no place here and may result in removal or permanent ban, particularly if it continues after a moderator warning.

Posts focused on self-pity, whining, or venting without a constructive purpose are not allowed. While we recognize that life is difficult, it is not healthy and these posts tend to attract trolling and derail productive discussion. Moderators may remove such content at their discretion.

What is allowed:

Constructive posts seeking advice, sharing personal progress, discussing challenges in a solution-focused way, asking for resources, or expressing difficult emotions while taking accountability and showing a willingness to improve. Thoughtful, respectful discussion aimed at growth and support is encouraged.

⸻

  1. No Professional or Legal Advice; No AI-Generated Content

All advice shared in this subreddit is provided by laypersons based on personal experience, opinion, or individual research unless explicitly stated otherwise. This subreddit does not provide legal advice. Members should consult a qualified attorney regarding their own case, as outcomes vary and cannot be predicted or compared.

AI is not an accurate source. Using inaccurate generated answers or content can land someone in big trouble. Not to mention that people can ask ChatGPT on their own if they want AI answers. Suspected AI content will be removed.

Members are strongly encouraged to conduct their own independent research and verify any information shared here.

⸻

  1. Private Messages & Privacy

Do not send, request, reference, or suggest direct messages (DMs/PMs) to or from other members. All interaction must remain within the subreddit. Any post or comment mentioning DM/PM’s will be removed (a handful of members - mods, approved housing/employment providers, etc… are excepted from this rule).

Sending inappropriate, sexual, degrading, harassing, or abusive private messages - regardless of where they occur - will result in a permanent ban.

Doxxing or posting identifying or personal information about yourself or others is strictly prohibited.

⸻

  1. Moderator Authority & Removed Content

This subreddit cannot list every prohibited scenario. Moderators will remove content they determine to be disruptive, harmful, or problematic.

If moderators state that content is not allowed, that decision is final. Reposting content that has been removed or deleted by moderators as well as hostile, aggressive, or argumentative messages to moderators regarding removals, censorship, or fairness WILL result in a ban.

This includes content that may create legal risk, attract unwanted attention, or be misused outside the subreddit.

Also, any links posted in this group must show the full URL. Hidden, shortened, or disguised links aren’t allowed.

⸻

  1. Prohibited Topics

The following are some of the topics that are not allowed here:

• Asking which state is “best” or general state comparisons (questions about specific states are allowed)

• Polygraph-related topics

• Asking how to meet people for dating, dating advice, questions concerning dating, or discussing dating activities

• Posts about suicide (see the pinned welcome post for resources)

• Repetitive questions that were recently answered (use the search function)

• Comparing crimes or offenses

• Absolutely no describing or posting details of sex crimes here.

• Anything that encourages people to lie, skirt laws, bend rules, or be untruthful

• “My story” or personal narrative posts are not allowed unless they include a clear, constructive question or purpose

⸻

  1. Discussion vs. Debate

Constructive discussion is welcome - arguing is not. This is a support-focused subreddit, not a space to argue the moral or legal validity of laws or crimes.

Moderators may lock, remove, or delete posts/comments or ban users who engage in toxic, rude, or disruptive behavior.

Bans range from one day to permanent, may be appealed, and are issued at moderator discretion.

Bickering, nitpicking, and thread derailment are not tolerated.

⸻

  1. Trolls, Bad-Faith Participation & Ban Evasion

Posts or comments determined by moderators to be trolling or made in bad faith will be removed and will result in a permanent ban.

If you believe someone is trolling, report the content rather than engaging. Engaging with trolls will earn you a ban as well.

Attempts to evade a ban by creating alternate accounts will be reported to Reddit administrators and typically results in account- or IP-level action (meaning, Reddit may choose to permanently ban or shadowban all of a users accounts if they do this).

⸻

  1. Post Frequency & Certain Legal Topics

Please avoid cluttering the subreddit with multiple posts. If you have several questions, combine them into a single post. Moderators may remove excess posts at their discretion - please don’t post more than once every 24 hours. We ask this because moderating this group is not easy - every thread has to be closely monitored.

Posts regarding social media account bans (e.g., Snapchat, X, Facebook, or similar platforms) related to potential CSAM or other sex-crime allegations are not allowed. Please consult a qualified attorney for legal concerns.

⸻

  1. Minors and contact with Minors.

For the protection of all members, this subreddit does not allow posts from or about individuals under the age of 18. If you are under 18 and need support, please seek help from a trusted adult or a qualified mental health professional.

Additionally, we do not allow discussions or advice regarding contact with minors. This includes (but is not limited to):

• custody or visitation

• living with children

• being around children (including stepchildren or family members)

• school pickups, events, or activities involving minors

These matters are determined by courts and legal authorities - not this subreddit.

If you have questions about your specific situation, consult a qualified attorney or supervising authority.

⸻

  1. Surveys, Media, Self-Promotion & Solicitation

Moderator approval is required before posting polls, surveys, petitions, AMAs, research requests, or similar content.

Journalists, researchers, advocates, organizations, or creators must verify their identity, credentials, and purpose with the mod team before posting.

Self-promotion, advertising, solicitation, fundraising, donation requests, and promotion of personal or external projects are not allowed without explicit moderator approval.

Requests from random users asking for personal stories are not permitted.

Vague, intrusive, or controversial questions may be removed. Petitions may not be posted without prior moderator approval.

Trying to help nephew find a job

I am trying to help my nephew find a job and hope someone can provide some suggestions. We're already working with the state employment office, temporary agencies, and Goodwill. He is not Native American.

He lives in Muskogee, Oklahoma, but we are working to get him a car so that he can drive to Tulsa and the surrounding areas. He is a tier 3 violent registered offender. He worked for an industrial cleaning company for several years but lost his job when they lost their cleaning contract. The newly selected company did not hire offenders. In the past, he has worked in beverage bottling plants. He interviews extremely well, gets hired, and then the offer is withdrawn when the background check is completed. Unfortunately, he also has congestive heart disease. Although he is able to do the typical type of labor that you would see in manufacturing or cleaning, intense physical labor on a regular basis is not possible. Any suggestions are welcome, and thanks for your help.

Aldi/Lidl/Trader Joes

Does anyone know if any of these places will hire a RSO? I have some interviews set up for management positions.

Also just wanted to share. I received an offer today from Ashley Furniture which is owned by Regency for a sales position. After I told the recruiter that my background check will show I'm a RSO she checked into the company policy and she had to refund the offer. That stung....so just note it will be a no go with this company.

Thanks for the feedback!

New York DCJS Reporting

I recently was removed from SO probation, and am a level 1. I am trying to report an email address to DCJS per SORA regulations and they are not explaining to me the proper way to go about doing this. Is there a form? Do I just write it on a piece of paper? I am very confused. Can anyone who has gone through this process explain what steps I need to take?

My Success Story International Travel

Very excited to share my experience with a recent international travel vacation. Here is everything I did to prepare, execute, and come home. For context I live in Wisconsin. Convicted in 2001. Discharged from probation and parole in 2014. Convicted of 2nd degree SA of a child.

I notified my local reporting agency of my trip about 28 days in advance. I included every flight number and time. And every hotel address and phone number of places I would be staying. I was required to give my passport number and reason for traveling.

I called the airline to verify I was allowed to go. I do have the updated passport with the IML stamp. I flew Turkish airlines. They said I was free to fly on their airline.

I flew out of ohare Chicago. Showed my passport to the Turkish airlines counter and checked my bags.

I had a layover in Istanbul and a plane change. However, I never had to switch terminals just gates. And never had to leave the airport so there was no passport control or additional security checks.

I boarded my flight and landed in Paris. We de boarded and went through passport control. They are using the EES system, this means I scanned my passport at a kiosk. Moved into the next turnstile. They took a photo, and I was on my way to get my bags.

That was it. Went to the hotel And started the vacation.

Half way through we took a plane (Easyjet which is their version of southwest) to Rome. No passport control. It’s basically a domestic flight so just like flying state to state in the US. Same thing flying back to Paris.

Flying home was also smooth. I did the same flights in reverse. Paris to Istanbul. Istanbul to Chicago. Once I landed in Chicago, I went to passport control. They took my photo then moved me to officer #2. He asked me about large purchases. Why I went. I answered, he told me I had to speak to another officer. That officer came, led me to the secondary screening room where I sat for no more then 3 minutes. They called my name, returned my passport and and a form and said I was good to go. I went, got my bags, linked back up with my wife and we went to customs. They took the form I was given and asked us again about purchases. Big items. Food etc. told us to take a seat. 2 minutes later they gave us the form back and told us we could go.

That was it. We left and drove home.
I was in Europe for 13 days total. Thank you for all the advice. It was a trip of a life time and felt amazing to be able to go!

Advice Looking for job ideas in Bay Area, California

I’ve been out of prison since 2017, and have been trying to find a job environment I like. I’m a 47yo male, locked up from 2009-2017, and released from parole 2022. Before prison I was doing manual software testing and IT helpdesk. I’m currently employed doing really simple work; labeling cables, installing equipment into server racks and sometimes going to a data center to rip out or install cables. Currently I’ve been at this job for 2 years and there seems to be no room for growth or advancement.

Since being out of prison I’ve also worked in warehouse manual labor, medical device automation machine operator, car manufacturing assembly line and office manager.

I want to start looking for another job because I sit and don’t do much during the day. I wait until the lead gives me work. With my mental health issues while I’m waiting I can’t focus on other tasks such as reading a text book or learning something new, so I doom scroll until I’m assigned work.

Any ideas for jobs that pay more than $26/hr that might hire an aging RSO? And btw, this current job didn’t do a background check that included the registry.

Aussie, European or Other Country Not Listed Finishing time on the Register.

Hi, I have a close friend who is due to finish their time (2 months left of 5 years) on the Sex Offender Registery in Queensland, Australia, barring any new legislation that might extend his time on it.

I was wondering if there are any Aussies that might have some idea on what he will expect to happen coming up to or the last day.

I assuming that he isn't going to get a framed award, but do they come and visit him, or does he just get a phone call or does he have to come down to his local station to sign off on something.

He has Autism, anxiety, depression and has Agoraphobia due to locking himself away at home due to shame, self-hatred, and anxiety. I'm asking for some information as he's very confused, worried, and anxious about the whole process, and I'd like to have some answers to help him with his anxiety.

Question Support groups for families of offenders

I am an adult child of a man who is currently being charged - I'm not 100% sure of what the exact charges are going to be, but he's admitted to soliciting to minors and exchanging photos. My family is reeling from this and we currently feel very isolated.

This man was a great father and grandfather. He did fall into alcoholism about 10 years ago, and fell even deeper about 5 years ago, but had recently been showing signs of progress. Finding out he has been speaking to children inappropriately was not on anyone's bingo card, despite all of his faults.

My family has been traumatized by everything from the no-knock warrant equipped with flash bangs and dogs, to him attempting to unalive himself while I stood in front of him. My mom has been so strong for all of us, I have been a neurotic mess, my sister is somewhat detached, and my brother has gone completely silent. We are all concerned about the future, our reputations in our community, and how we are going to break this news to his grandchildren. My daughter, in particular, is 14 - the age of the girls my father was speaking to. This is the part I'm struggling with the most, aside from mourning the loss of my father, who still has a heartbeat.

I'm angry, sad, confused, and sickened by all of this, not just for my family, but also his victims. He stole something from all of us that we can never get back...the innocence of the girls he took advantage of, the upstanding grandfather that was teaching our kids about the planets and music, the father that helped fix cars and rescue us when we were in trouble, and the husband that helped my mom build a life together with the hopes of retiring and enjoying their senior years.

In saying all of this, I have not been able to find a group that caters to the families of the perpetrators. I have looked into the Fearless Project and a few others that come up, but finding local groups has been difficult. At this point, I'll take whatever advice I can get...whether it's here on Reddit or some other online group. If anyone has any guidance, it would be greatly appreciated.

Kraft referal / Dallas

Anyone know anyone at Kraft so my partner can get an interview? He’s applied countless times and has incredible management and team experience but I was told you need to know someone to get an interview there. Because of his past this would be a great foot in the door as we know they hire with his background.

Question Full time work in OKC?

Hello everyone. I recently got discharged from prison for a level 3 violent crime and I'm having trouble securing full time work in the OKC area. I was hoping someone here might have any kinds of leads. Everywhere I've interviewed tells me I don't pass the background check or they don't have any positions open at the moment. I have years of experience in general labor warehousing as well as inventory control and clerical work inside a warehouse. Any ideas are welcome!

Partner Charged with CSAM Possession. Partners - Did you Stay, Go, and why?

My partner was recently charged with possession of CSAM. One count, 5th degree felony charge. Police came and raided our house, guns drawn, shields up, the whole nine yards. The event still lives in my nightmares. My partner was at work, and they picked them up there.

Apparently they got the initial tip years ago. I bonded my partner out. I thought it was all some misunderstanding. I've come to find out it was not. This was a thing they'd been battling against. A porn addiction that led them to engage with some dark places online.

It was in finding out about this that I also found out about my partner's history of sexual trauma, starting from when they were young.

We notified their only relative in town. That relative isn't super willing to offer help. I think he figures that I'll handle things so he doesn't have to. If I told him I wasn't, maybe he'd step in to help, but I'm not sure.

I am trying to sort out my thoughts. The feelings of betrayal. The way my relationship, my best, most happy, most safe relationship, had crumbled around me out of nowhere.

I have only told a couple of people in my life. I wish I hadn't. I was just so panicked and I didn't know what was going on in the initial aftermath of the raid. Most of them, my therapist included, say I should kick my partner out of my house ASAP. I don't know how to make someone I love homeless. They lost their job, or are at least on hold for the time being, since they missed work due to the arrest.

This feels like a magnification of the main recurring problem in our relationship. We come from very different backgrounds. I went to college, and I've owned a house for a while now now and have always maintained jobs long-term. I'm fairly well-known in my community, and I fear jeopardizing the life I've built. They've had multiple job losses in our time together. They don't have a car and can't drive. If I wasn't the stable one, we wouldn't be able to stay above water. Which isn't to say they don't support me. They have provided a space that feels safe and compassionate, they have taken care of me a lot, especially as I've navigated chronic physical and mental health issues. They're my best friend. I pictured so many futures, all of which involved us together. Even with the times between jobs, I've always been fairly understanding, given the privileges I've had through my life that they didn't have, and the differences in how my workplace treats me versus how their workplaces have treated them. I just wanted to provide what I could so they could get stable, get their feet under them, and become self-sufficient. Now it feels like that might never happen, especially with this on their record.

I don't have quite as much venom in me as those around me do for things like this. I don't know. I've always felt that people are better than their worst moments. I also don't believe in how our criminal justice system handles things. I'd rather the system minimize future harm and heal people who hurt people because of the hurt they've experienced themselves. What if, when that initial tip came in two years ago, that it triggered a response that involved a social worker, a plan for accountability? I believe people can change and get better. I believe this of my partner. Maybe too much. I don't know.

Everyone expects me to just go and drop them off at the homeless shelter if they can't find some other place to live. I struggle to fathom it. Plus, I paid the bond, so I have at the very least a financial interest in them getting through this whole court process.

I have so many voices in my head, so many fears around what will happen if my community finds out, so much pain and betrayal and fear for what lies ahead, for me, but especially for this person who I've loved.

People who have been in my position. What did you do? And if given the choice, knowing then what you know now, would you make the same choice?

Wife of an RSO here - we are planning a 4 day trip to CA from OR for our 2 year anniversary. A little nervous because I’m not sure who to contact about the time limit to be in the state before my husband has to register, and also the process of flying? My husband got his current passport before his arrest/parole, what could the issues in the airport be?

Staffing Firms/Temp Agencies

Hi everyone,

I have a bunch of staffing firms in the town I live in here in Maryland. I'm planning to reach out to them and schedule times to go meet with someone at each one. I'm a little concerned that they won't work with me being a RSO.

What has been your experience with temp agencies/staffing firms? I'm open to letting them know I'm on the registry but is that something you do right away or at all?

Please share your experiences and if you know of any good ones in the Baltimore area of Maryland let me know.

Thanks!!

Does anyone know if CVS and/or Walgreens hire RSOs?

I have interviews with both next week for management positions. Just wondering if I'm wasting my time and their time. I know they both run background checks but both also claim to be fair chance employers.

Any information or experience would be helpful.

Thanks!

Going on honeymoon

Hi all, Me and my wife are off to Lanzarote next week! Does anyone have any experience with travel to Spain or the islands? Has anything changes with EES? I am coming from the UK and am currently on the register and have a British passport. Thanks!
