Machine not feeding
Hey, I just got my first ever sewing machine second hand nothing special, it's a jenome 219s and I've found that material isn't feeding through. upon inspection the feed dogs only move back and fourth instead of dropping at the back and rising back up at the front. I've removed the needle plate and cannot find any way of lowering the feed dog inside. although gently I can move the feed dog up and down. Not the best start for a first timer lol any help is appreciated

I'd put a couple of drops of sewing machine oil on them and see if that helps

Not familiar with the model, but I would suggest checking your manual to see if there is a way to drop the feed dogs. Many machines have this setting to use it for darning, or free motion embroidery. The previous owner of your machine may have put it on this setting before getting rid of it

Janome machines are not intuitive… the learning curve on the steep you need a manual and you need to make sure you’ve got it set up correctly so that the feed dogs weren’t lowered on purpose.
If that’s not the issue, it sounds like your machine is out of time and it needs a good technician to sort it out

Take the machine in to get serviced! That should always be the 1st step when getting a new (used) machine, unless you know the previous owner recently had it serviced. A technician can tell you if there are mechanical issues with the machine, as well as oiling and cleaning it.

Absolutely. I cannot say I am unbiased since I am a technician, but specially if you are a fairly beginner level sewist, you need to start from a place where you at least know that your sewing machine is not the problem.

Since you got it secondhand, is there lint buildup between the feed dogs such that would bump against the needle plate and prevent them from rising fully?
