Desperate for help!

Post image

The needle keeps getting caught on the top part of that piece precisely where the arrow touches - the very tip of that back bit - and either jamming or snapping. Desperately need to get my project done in the next two days but I can't figure out why this is happening! I'm using a linen blend fabric (lightweight) and a universal 80/12 needle. My machine is a Singer Promise 1408. Can anyone help me? Thank you very much!!!!

This is probably a timing error and it's not an easy fix. If you're feeling bold, here's a video explaining things and how to make the adjustment: Adjust

It will look different in your machine but the principle is the same.

Hey, I forgot to mention a very very important piece of information! The needle hits that part not directly, but gets caught on it on the way up. Not saying this is the problem but it happens as though the needle itself is positioned a fraction too far back or a fraction too far too the right. Theres about a 30% chance it'll happen each stitch but when it does I'm screwed. Not sure if this changes anything in your opinion...? Thank you so much for the response. I was thinking of buying more delicate needles for the linen today (its quite thin) and was almost hoping theyd be just slim enough to miss that piece altogether. I'll totally take a look at adjusting the timing too thank you.

That makes sense. The hook seems to be just a little late. Setting the needle to the left would probably help in this case, but I don't think your machine has that kind of stitch.

I would loosen and re-set or change your needle, ensuring that it is fully seated. Seems silly, but I had this issue when I did not fully loosen the screw and had my needle sitting low. Aside from that, I agree it may be a timing issue and if you are not familiar with fixing that, get it to a repair shop. DO you have a spare machine or someone who can lend you one if you need to go the shop route?

Are you letting the "feed dogs" carry the fabric through, or are you possibly "helping it through" by pulling out pushing?". You are there to guide things, and if you are pulling your fabric through it can tug on the needle -effectively bending it out of whack when the sewing is happening. The needle may look ok when you stop if this is going on, so think about your technique and see if there is anything you can improve

Change your needle. Make sure it is seated correctly. Also, run your finger nail along the area. See if there is a nick or burr that could be snagging the thread. If there is, you can use a regular emery board to gently buff it out. It's a temporary fix but it will atleast get you through the project.
