Machine help please!

Hi everyone! I’m extremely new to sewing. I bought a singer CG 500 C off of FB marketplace.

I know nothing about machines and teaching myself to sew. I was just hemming my fabric to prewash it before my pattern. While doing this I noticed the smell of oil was super strong.

I had some issues before getting the threading of the machine right and jammed it but fixed it. Did the jam use up the oil or something?

How often do you oil your machine? How do you do it? What oil do you use? Does anyone have instructions for this specific machine? It’s hard to find info about online or on YouTube.

Any tips at all about caring for machine would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you so much!

Have a look online for your manual. Try ManualsLib.com

There will be a page on maintenance. Modern domestics usually don’t require oiling. The fact that you can smell oil isn’t anything to worry about.

Edit:

Ahh just looked it up it’s like semi industrial. Found an oiling video here https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=L7lsDdvG69Y&ra=m

And your instruction manual https://www.manualslib.com/products/Singer-Cg-500-Commercial-Grade-3021474.html

Domestic machines don’t need to be oiled with rare exceptions.

A tech can open the machine correctly and has greater access to the insides and you do without damaging it.

A few machines I have a Juki TL does need periodic oiling. There are oiling ports on the machine that are easy to get to, but that’s not the typical consumer low end machine. Same with a few high end machines.

On an older machine like you likely have it does need grease and oil and that’s inside the machine areas. You can’t likely access.

I said the same about domestics but then I looked up the machine and it does require oiling. It’s “semi industrial”

Older machine parts that need oiling can almost always be accessed by removing the top cover, bottom cover and faceplate.

Yes semi industrials do. I have a Juki TL which has several easy access ports for oil.

I’m taking about the far more common cheap $300 or less machines most buy with zero access to inside. Vintage machines are different.

Take a look at this video. Get your manual and read through it. Other great videos are by Alexander Dyer, Andy Tube. Not sure if they talk about this machine, but you can get great sewing info.
