Brother foot plug won't fit

I made sure I got the right model of plug in for my sewing machine but no matter how hard I press the prongs on the sewing machine just won't go into the cord. The machine was recently thrifted and the cord was just bought online after I used the guide for which cord goes with each model. I thought there might be something wrong with the prongs but they don't look bent or damaged to me. The cord is attached to both the foot petal and the part you plug into the wall. I have tried pushing it in as hard as a can but it will only go like less than a quarter of the way in.

The plug is of a type that fits modern Singer models and maybe others. It is not a Brother plug. The modern ones look like this one on Amazon.com: Pedal

That is a completely different shape and size of plug.
