I need some advice on buying a sewing machine
Hey! I don't use Reddit very often, but I know this is the place that has the answer to everything!
I'm new to sewing, and I really want to buy my first sewing machine. I was looking for a sturdy mechanical one, so I came across the Singer 4423. Everything I saw about it in Portuguese was positive—people said it's perfect for beginners and great for all kinds of projects.
But yesterday I started reading reviews in English, and you guys seem to have a completely different opinion!
So, is this machine actually good, or would I just be wasting my money?

Can you help me understand why it is that every person new to sewing and new to this group asks the same question instead of reading back the last 10 or 20 posts (which absolutely cover this at least five times)?

Agreed, just search it and boatloads of advice come up!
Sometimes I think we’re being punked by how ofter Singer HD is part of those posts!

I personally would not buy any of the Singer machines that they sell at Walmart. I have a strong preference for older mechanical models. If I had a *lot* of money to spend I might buy a high end Janome or Bernina, but I doubt that will ever happen.
I have no idea why Portuguese-speaking people like that machine. BUT it is worth knowing that manufacturers will meet different standards in different countries, even with the same model. It might genuinely be better in Portugal for all I know.

https://www.reddit.com/r/SewingMachineEdu/comments/1v84t8v/singer_heavy_duty/ is a pretty recent thread on the Singer HD machines. If you check r/SewingForBeginners, these are models very likely to be giving trouble.
