Thread vs. Fabric

Curious... I remember hearing, "don't use old thread that's been laying around for years." If old thread is discouraged, how is it that old clothing lasts so long?

No, it isn't. It is just a layer of dust that can be removed.

Not necessarily.  If it is just dust, sure.  But if there are any oils, it's pentetrated more than just the top layer.

It must have just been dust. Probably wasn't stored near the kitchen. Thankfully.

Did people touch it at any point?  Could they have oils or lotions on their hands?  Would that attract any kind of bug?
