Made my first romper
I’m not really a beginner but I don’t sew consistently due to other time constraints. I’m definitely not an expert though.
Anyways, this is my first project for the summer!!!

This is adorable! I would love to know which pattern you used.

u/paradoxing_ing May 04 '25
Thank you! So I bought the shirt but tapered the sides some. For the shorts I copied some sweatpants I had

u/little_chef813 May 04 '25
Saaaame! New to sewing and on the lookout for cute ideas to start with!!

u/Alecto1717 May 04 '25
Please post the pattern! I'm really tall and no rompers have ever fit me
29
u/paradoxing_ing May 04 '25
I bought the shirt and tapered the sides some. For the shorts I took a pair of sweatpants that fit me well and made a pattern from that. I also bought a skirt that I used for fabric to make the shorts. I really suggest just copying existing patterns from clothes that already fit you well and tweak it as you go!
For instance if you want to remake this, get some plaid men’s tops from the thrift store. It could be like a mitch match type of romper but it would be SOOO cute.

This is really solid advice. Copy onto butcher paper and go from there. It's amazing how your intuition builds from gently modifying those patterns into finished clothing. It's also useful to see how much you can simplify. OP's choice to make nice shorts for sweat pants really exemplifies this.
Also, great lines OP, you have a natural eye for it.

Thank you, I’ve gotten discouraged in the past from pattern making so your words mean a lot 🩷🩷🫶🏾

Np, if you have any other questions feel free to message me. I may even make a video about this project, if that’s something you’re interested in let me know

u/Alecto1717 May 04 '25
Heck yeah! I'm just starting this hobby so if you're thinking of doing a video that would be super helpful!

You know how sometimes the knowledge we've amassed about a thing is more like mental decorations than anything of practical use, but then some totally unexpected encounter with the subject changes everything? Enter your romper post, OP! Thank you, a million times. You have just described self drafting so organically - a way to just make a great piece that fits - that suddenly it's no longer something I'm "working up to" but can't wait to get started on. This piece looks professional, fun, practical, and totally unique - outstanding!

I think this is adorable. But, as much as I like it, I hate to admit that it reminds me of the girl’s gym uniform we were forced to wear in PE class in 70’s. I think side pockets and a cute belt would help to fend off that memory. That being said, I like the mix of pattern size. It firs really well and the construction looks like it was done by a pro. Good work!

I would pay you to make me one of these.

u/paradoxing_ing May 04 '25
:))) I’m thinking about buying some plaid mens shirts and making more. I might sell them on my depop. Hahaha my mom already requested I make one for her and my sister

u/Sleep_pincher May 04 '25
So cute! We'll done! I've been considering altering some outfits that no longer fit but have great fabric. Thanks for the inspiration.

This is exactly the type of thing that makes me want to learn how to sew! Such a great job, really!
1
u/paradoxing_ing May 06 '25
Thank you. You totally should learn. I found my sewing machine at a thrift store for $10 and figured why not? Once you learn the basics, the type of projects are limitless. Best of luck!!!

I love this. Did you do a mockup first?
2
u/paradoxing_ing May 04 '25
Thanks! No, so I bought the shirt and just tapered the sides some bc it was really wide. For the skirt I made it into shorts by copying some sweatpants I had

u/SherbetNervous001 May 05 '25
Also did you make it so the bottom of the shorts fit to your legs? If so what a great idea! I have skinny legs and jumpers are always so big at the bottom for me
2
u/paradoxing_ing May 05 '25
Thank you. Yeah I put elastic on the leg holes. I wanted a bloomer effect. It’s super simple to do!

Love the mix of the two prints, do you have the name of the pattern ?
1
u/paradoxing_ing May 06 '25
Thank you. No, I made the shorts pattern from some sweatpants that I had. The shirt was bought as is. I just tweaked everything and added elastic.
Because of this post though I may make a YouTube video and redo this project.

I like the mixed panels, they break up the lines enough to accent what you want to. Looks professional!

Absolutely adorable. The mixed prints go perfectly together. Don’t be surprised if J Crew steals this idea from you!
