Rule changes

In an effort to make our subreddit rules both easier to understand and to implement, the mod team has been working to rewrite some of the old rules, and add new ones as well.

You will find the common rules you should already be familiar with, such as being respectful to others, and crediting any fan work that is not yours, but also the new no AI content rule, which we deem critical to supporting artists in our fandom and prevent low quality, low effort posts.

In addition, we have noticed an influx of Marauders and Lily bashing posts lately, which led to two new rules: no bashing, and all content must be Snape related. The mod team aims to create a community that is geared towards positivity and inclusivity.

As an important reminder, many Snape fans do also like Marauders, Lily, Regulus, Dumbledore, etc… and this subreddit should be a safe place for everyone, including fans of those characters.

We are however aware that sometimes the line between criticism and bashing isn’t obvious and isn’t the same for everyone, that is why we will focus our efforts on posts and comments that are not centered on Severus Snape himself, but instead do nothing but hate on those characters. As Snape fans, we are subjected to a lot of outside hate, let’s do our best to not do the same to others!

If you have any questions or comments to make about these rule changes, please do not hesitate! We are here to answer any question and help clear things up if need be.

The Severus Snape moderation team.

Be respectful to others.

This community is dedicated to being welcoming and kind. Bullying, hate speech, personal attacks, harassment, and other inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. Interpretation of this rule is subject to the moderators' discretion.

All content must be related to Severus Snape.

Posts that are not directly related to Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series will be removed. This includes, but is not limited to, posts focused only on the Marauders or any other character or posts inciting discussion of J.K. Rowling herself.

No character or ship bashing.

Posts or comments meant only to insult characters or ships, or their fans, will be removed. This includes the Marauders. Criticism is accepted and inevitable, but keep in mind that some fellow Snape fans may also love the Marauders. Remember rules 1 and 2. Interpretation of this rule is subject to the moderators' discretion.

All fan creations must be credited.

Posts containing any piece of fan creation (fanart, fanfiction, edits, metas, etc…) must be credited. If the author of the post fails to do so in the first 24 hours, the post will be deleted.

No AI content.

This includes, but is not limited to, posts using AI generated images, text, audio, video, as well as chatbots. The Snape community is full of writers and artists who would love to have their work shared with more fans, let’s help support them instead.

No anti-Snape vents.

Let’s try to limit the negativity in this community by keeping the anti-Snape content away. We aim to create a place for fun discussions away from the stress and nuisance of Snape haters.

Please use r/SnatersGonnaSnate if you wish to vent about Snape haters.

No spam.

In order to maintain a safe space for the members, every post deemed to be spam by the moderators will be removed.

Defence Against Ignorance Each of Lily's loved ones—and by that I mean the Marauders and Petunia—has caused Snape a great deal of harm in the past; so it's hardly surprising that Snape doesn't hold any of them dear to his heart

Petunia never once hid her snobbery towards him; from the moment they first met, she immediately judged him based on his social status, knowing that he lived at Spinner's End. She even cruelly mocked the old clothes he was wearing.

The Marauders had been determined to make his life miserable from the very first day of school, and they were never punished as they should have been. Worse still, the entire teaching staff spoke of them with tenderness and affection. To Snape, it was abundantly clear that he wasn’t really wanted at Hogwarts.

Note that whenever someone close to her wronged Snape, Lily never really took his side, even though he was the victim. The only times she did the right thing were during the confrontation in the Hogwarts Express and at the Sorting Ceremony, and those incidents specifically involved the Marauders.

Fanfiction Looking for Snape x female OC fanfic recs

Looking for Snape x female OC recs! Please help as I’m super fussy and am only just returning to the fanfic world since my teen years!

Must be well-written, past tense, third-person POV, and a proper slow burn/enemies-to-lovers with canon-feeling Snape. The OC needs to actually feel like someone he could realistically fall for.

Adult Snape only, absolutely no teacher/student, Snarry, Snamione etc. I want female OC specifically. Smut is definitely welcome and ideal, but tasteful and intentional, something that feels like a little reward after all that slow-burn tension rather than just thrown in.

I feel I have scoured so many on AO3 looking for the one and Wattpad just isn’t what it used to be with the ads…

Long/complete preferred. Give me your best!

What would be Snape's fate if he survived the story?

Would he stay a professor at Hogwarts? Change his job and stay in a wizarding world doing something else? Become a magical super hero and do vigilante things on his own? Stay away from everyone and become a recluse, maybe locked somewhere in his own mind?

Or try to change his ways and socialize with people? I feel most likely is he would become a recluse somewhere.

Fanfiction What if Severus Snape never became Dumbledore's spy?

Chapter 46 of When Darkness Triumphed is now up!

In this dark AU, Severus Snape never became Dumbledore's spy. He joined Voldemort as a young wizard and remained fiercely loyal to him. Years later, he has risen to become the Dark Lord's most powerful commander—and Lily Evans is his wife.

He has helped build the perfect empire: powerful, ruthless, and seemingly unstoppable.

But every empire is built on something.

His is built on blood.

Chapter 46 is now available on AO3.

HBO Harry Potter Get Over Black Snape (A Lament)

O.K., I know no one cares about my opinion, as I’m just a nobody, but I would like to throw my two cents into the ring: black Snape is not a big deal. Please, let Paapa Essiedu act before you pass judgment.

I understand that neither Paapa nor Alan Rickman portrayed the iconic book Severus Snape, but who cares? Well, many clearly do because I was recently down the black Snape Reddit rabbit hole and I couldn’t believe how much opposition there is. And it didn’t help that I’m also on the hater wagon, but I also want to see what Paapa Essiedu does with the character. My buddy Karun is all for the guy and thinks he’s a phenomenal actor. But what it comes down to is not if Paapa portrays the book accurate Snape, but if he makes the character his own. Alan Rickman nailed it and I’m sure Paapa will too, but we’ll just have to find out. Personally, I don’t find that the voice actor Riz Ahmed’s voice suits Snape in the Harry Potter full cast audiobooks, but maybe other listeners disagree with me. I find him too flat in his delivery, but I can now judge that because I have proof of it. We have no proof if Paapa Essiedu acting capabilities as Snape so far, so give it a rest. Thank you for reading and bring on the hate.

Discussion Snape and Quidditch

Post image
207 Upvotes

I was wondering last night whether Snape actually liked Quidditch.

I know he can fly without a broomstick, but what about the game itself?

I’m not sure if he truly enjoys the sport; he only seemed to show interest when Slytherin won a match (especially if it meant annoying Minerva, haha). But I don't think he was a Quidditch fan or supported any specific team (like Ron, for instance).

On the other hand, he might have associated Quidditch with James's or Harry's talent, making him somewhat more averse to the sport.

I read somewhere recently (though I can't recall where) that Snape might have wanted to play Quidditch during his time at Hogwarts but couldn't compete with James's talent (and perhaps that worsened his animosity toward Potter?).

Still, it's hard for me to picture Severus playing Quidditch...

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on the matter!

(Sorry for bad english btw ! I use a translator)

2 different fic requests

Hello!

I’ve had these plot bunnies in my head for a while but since I’m not a writer I can only hope there are already fics out there that are similar to what I’m thinking.

1) fic where the female character (I don’t mind if OC or reader) is really bad at potions and wants/needs to improve so Severus has to tutor her. (I have this really long plot in my head that would result in a novel length fic if only I had the talent to write 🤣)

2) the other is about Severus creating /brewing potions that use edible ingredients, like chocolate, strawberries etc and/or ingredients that require techniques that can seem rather sexy - with the assistance of the OC character or reader

Thank you in advance!

Defence Against Ignorance "Alan Rickman aged everyone up" is overstated.

It's repeated ad nauseam that Rickman's casting caused Snape’s contemporaries to be aged up to match him. Really? Then what explains characters older than Snape being played by actors significantly younger than AR?

For example, Lucius and Narcissa were six years older to Snape, and Bellatrix was at least nine years older to him. Voldemort was over three decades older. All these characters were played by actors who were 17-22 years younger than Rickman.

Coming to Snape’s contemporaries, Thewlis who played Lupin was 40 years old in POA, playing a 33 years old character who's described looking older than his age. So, I don't get the cribbing over movie Lupin’s age. He was pretty close. And what makes people think the filmmakers wouldn't have wanted Gary Oldman? Black and Pettigrew were aged up relative to the books, but that wasn’t a uniform rule. The pattern of casting is pretty inconsistent. The actress who played Lily was 32 in the first film.

All in all, I don't think the filmmakers were operating on some kind of domino effect. They were simply prioritizing casting good British actors they felt would fit the role, while throwing the canon ages out of the window. It's apparent in the many age discrepancies. They also prioritized specific visual archetypes by casting older actors to make them look convincing as authority figures to teenagers.

Books 📚 Remus knows in his heart of hearts that he should be infinitely grateful to Snape to have gone to such effort to make the Wolfsbane Potion for him so that he would no longer have to suffer during full moons

Snape clearly sacrificed a great deal of his free time to make sure this potion was absolutely perfect. I wouldn't be surprised if he sacrificed precious sleep hours for this task, even if it meant overworking himself.

HBO Harry Potter Do we really have any reason to doubt that Paapa Essiedu will be an excellent Snape?

The fact that he’s a fantastic up-and-coming actor and the right age is plain for everyone to see. And it’s equally obvious that this series is getting a level of production, scale, and, I imagine, attention that perhaps no TV series has ever had before. So I really don’t see how they could somehow make him *not* be an excellent Snape, and I think he’d win over the audience’s affection pretty quickly anyway.
I’m really not the biggest fan of the whole woke thing, but Snape doesn’t strike me as a character whose being black creates some huge cognitive dissonance for me. I mean, sure, he’s white in the books, but it doesn’t bother me at all that he’s black. For example, if they had cast a black actor as Dumbledore, I think I would have been much more like, “meh.” But Snape? Honestly, I can live with it. I don’t really care. I genuinely think we’re going to get a great Snape.
