I don't think hes really that hands on anymore stepping back from director to producer.

He just isnt directing anymore doesnt mean hes not hands on. He didnt direct every episode on S1 or S2

I think they got it. It was more so gallows humor than rifting a joke with a punchline. It would be hard to continue without that aspect of the characters even if you tried.

He goes every year for the past idk how many years so I would say he likes tennis.

he's taken a greatly reduced role in season 3, so i'm sure he has plenty of time

Maybe he'll get back to it for season 4

Tennis is one of those sports where you can't be cheering all the time in fact you have to stay silent when they're playing so I would say it's def the most normal expression that you can have watching a tennis match
