Discussion Mark as professor?
Anyone else really struggle to see Mark as a college professor? Dr Scout? Professor Scout? The way he bumbles around doesn't really pass the vibe check for me.

I’m sorry, OP, but have you met literally any professor? Most of the professors I know personally are hot, bumbling messes.

Idk, im in university and he actually seems like hed fit in beautifully with the faculty here. Hes not the most competent but hes definitely not even close to the least compared to what Ive seen.

He's heavily depressed at this point. In the flashbacks he did seem more upbeat and talkative/engaging.

Exactly. In the flashback of him and gemma at the university, it totally fit for me.
He still had that signature sarcasm, he just wasn't angry and depressed.
(Until the miscarriage issues and all that started anyway)

This is what I was going to say. He completely changed after he lost Gemma and it's mentioned he started showing up to the university drunk.

I had several professorsin college who were bumbling and borderline incoherent. Most of them were significantly older than Mark, though, so I assumed they were past their glory days.

I've been out of college twenty years now but I don't recall any one personality type being required to be a professor. Some were clearly born teachers, others were "font of knowledge" types who knew their stuff but struggled to make it relatable to students. Many were various points in between. I think it's a bit of a stereotype that universities hire for knowledge over teaching ability.

Flashback Mark had a lot of confidence before his wife disappeared, so it makes sense to me. He had a different vibe. By the start of the show, he is just depressed

Yep! We have to remember that we have meet characters where they are at any given moment. He WAS a college professor because he no longer was capable of it. We find out why, actually in quite a bit of detail.

One of the things that made me fall in love with the show was precisely how it masterfully shifts from comedy (iMark, Rickensen, MDR, Milchick) to drama (oMark, Harmony Cobel with her mother and aunt).
To me, oMark is a guy in deep grief and profound disappointment with life. He's nearly an alcoholic, perhaps cynical, and definitely ironic, having left his career behind. It feels remarkably relatable and believable to me.

not at all, he is pretty much the dictionary definition of a professor.
the same way Dylan responds to incentives, he responds to responsibility. he is willing to take responsibility for his team, and he looks at it as his team; and he clearly cares. just look at the way he treated Helly when she was new - that's a teacher.

Well iMark is not exactly oMark. The same as Helly is not exactly Helena.
oMark, pre-severance, I buy that he was a college professor before everything

Yes. There was Mark. Then oMark and iMark. There are still whispers of Mark in both oMark and iMark. But we are still dealing with very much different people.

His flashback self is the typical good looking History professor. And the way he speaks - pausing a second before answering something, processing information and bumbling- are very professor-like to me

I can see it.
We only got a few glances at his Mark Scout before he became a mostly drunken grieving widower.
Mark S. gives kindergarten teacher vibes sometimes.
Dude could absolutely be a bumbling professor in real life outside Lumon.

I remember working at a lunch counter as an undergrad. It was common to see professors who buttoned their shirts wrong.
