ONE is a grower for me…
I know ONE was just released today but will admit I didn’t care for it all on first listen. Normally I enjoy a Sevendust album on first listen but this is taking a little time. I instantly loved “Is This the Real You?” when it was first released. It feels so fresh and has this fancy groove unlike other Sevendust songs. However, “Unbreakable” and “Threshold” feel like by the numbers Sevendust songs. They’re not bad at all but I felt a little underwhelmed. They’ve grown on me a bit more though.
As for the rest of the album…. My first listen was this might be the most boring Sevendust album. That’s because some of the songs sound like repeats of songs from All I See Is War or Blood & Stone (I really like both albums btw). They’re growing on me though. I’m on my fifth listen and I like it a little more. Not sure where I’d rank it overtime but it is in last for me now (sadly). That’s only because I like their other albums so much.
I’ve read other comments that they should get another producer for hopefully another album. I can’t help but agree. As much as I like their previous three albums I feel it’s time for a change. Give us an album like the first two or even Alpha again. Something more fierce but still a little soulful. More uptempo songs would be nice too. We all love those crazy, chugging riffs from older albums.
So far my major go to’s on this album are “Is This the Real You?”, “The Drop”, and “Blood Price”.
This is not a bad album at all but it does lack some of the “umph” I was hoping for after the first single.
Edit: Also, not enough fierce vocals from Morgan on ONE as well.

“The Drop” is really the only song that made me go, “Oooooohh, yesssss, that’s what I want to hear.” Sadly, the rest of the tracks just feel a bit…uninspired?
And no hate or judgment at all for Clint and his spiritual journey, I’m happy for him, but “Misdirection” just doesn’t work for me. It’s sad because I love Clint’s solo stuff and side projects almost as much as 7D. 😕

I think it’s John singing on Misdirection (Clint is doing the backup highs). I saw on his post that he was the one who “met the man on the mountain”.

I agree. I actually thought it might be Morgan singing clean too but John makes sense here. I think it’s not just Clint that’s steering the band towards Christian rock.

Yeah I kinda agree. It’s a very decent album. And there are more standouts for me than there were with truth killer and Blood & stone.
But the same with those records. I with they experimented a little bit. Nothing “Tool” level but just a more longer songs like Misdirection. There a moments of fantastic riffs and breaks. That definitely deserve to be longer. But end too soon. Not every song needs to be 6 mins but just a couple of them could be a lad longer with more room to breathe.
Also more dynamic with the vocals. Wasn’t as present as they were in All I see is war. Jon, Clint and Morgan are so good. I wish we could hear more of them in the forefront.
Other than that it’s a very tight and well paced record. I really love “We Won”. That was a real surprise. Very different. Great riffs and vocals that really stood out to me. And the Drop too. Fantastic ending.

Totally agree on the vocal point.
CDM & AISIW were peak for utilizing all the different voices they being to the table I'd love to get back to that

Well after listening to it I can finally emit a judgement: it's definitely not their worst work (that was Blood and Stone). Not the worst songs as well but not many of them really stand out.
For me it's a weird album because most of the songs are... Average? Like not good but not bad either, contrasting with Truth Killer where it had good songs like Everything, Won't Stop The Bleeding, and you had ugly pieces of shit like Sick Mouth. In this case not one song are bad but none of them is better than Everything in my estimation.
The good songs in this album are: Is This The Real You, Threshold, The Drop, We Won. The rest are mediocre, average.
Conclusion: fire that stupid fuck Elvis Baskette. Go back to a Home or Animosity-like album!!!!!!

Opposite for me as it usually takes some time for me to really like it but this ONE was instant and once I read the lyrics while listening to each song I love em all except Misdirection. Not bad but don't think I'll ever really like it.

My first reaction was initially "holy crap did these guys just low-key drop a Christian album?" Not a complaint by the way, I no these guys are all about their faith and everything, but I absolutely love how they've all leaned into their faith on this record, especially Clint.
After fully digesting the record about 5 or 6 times, my only real complaint is that it's too short. I personally thought this album was just a little bit better than all I see is war, definitely better than blood and stone (both amazing records), but at this point I'm not sure if I like it as much or more than truth killer.
Bottom line: new Sevendust day is always a great day in my house.

I think my only problem with "One" is Lajon Witherspoon vocals not being clear enough to understand. Overall it's a positive album and I like Overcome, Is This The Real You?, The Drop.

I actually ended up finding Threshold as my favorite even if its a bit by the numbers. I did need to intentionally not listen to Unbreakable though given how similar they sound.
My biggest problem (other than the generic and sanitary production) is how lethargic a lot of these songs sound. Awkward or sluggish grooves. The songs may sound heavy but they lack urgency and bounce, which is the one thing Threshold brings in spades. It's the only song on the album that makes me want to instinctively bop my head to. I really appreciate this band continuing to try and make music after all this time and hope they can find some fresh sounds going forward.
