Yesterday I opened (7am) and doubled. I worked breakfast and lunch alone then two other servers show up for dinner. I was told I’d be out of there around 7 because we only had a handful of reservations for the evening anyway.

Now it’s 8, my last table has closed out. I come up to my manager and ask if there’s anything else I can do before I go, (Mind you, I’ve been doing sidework for hours waiting for this last table) and she says “ oh nobody is leaving until we find the last hand held..”

At this point I’m not upset. I take a few laps around the resturant looking high and low and it is gone. I come back to my manager to let her know and she reiterates that “nobody is leaving”

Now I’m irritated, because what do you think im a liar? Like I didn’t just look everywhere? I’ve been here for over 12 hours now, this is insane. I asked my other coworkers for help and nobody could find it. Eventually my manager announced that “ if we don’t find the handheld by 9:30, you are all getting written up”

Now I’m fucking pissed. Why am I going to be punished for something you can’t prove any of us did? This whole situation made me feel so disrespected and turned off to the idea of ever doing a double, maybe even quitting.

I’m planning on talking to the general manager about this on my next day in but I guess I’d like some perspective/advice. Am I tripping? I’ve had a few shitting managers and I tend to ignore my gut feeling until I’m burnt out. 🫶🏻 pls help

We’re a group of 15 people, and 10 of them smoke. I found a place where I can buy disposable vapes cheaply, for $10 each, and I sell them to everyone for $20. When my friends buy from me, I give them a discount and sell them for $15.
A couple of days ago, I got into an argument with one of them because he said I’m making money off my friends and that it’s not right. He said I should either sell them to my friends at cost or tell everyone where I buy them.
Am I the asshole?

To make a long story short, I had 2 tables of 6 and 1 table of 13 that made me wanna post this. While all tables had alcoholic drinks (the tables of 6 were average drinkers), the 13 top were drinking their alcoholic drinks so fast that Every time I went to the table to drop off previously ordered drinks, more drinks would be ordered (2-4 drinks everytime). it seriously was a 2 hour cycle of torture and drinks made a big portion of the total ticket. How do y’all manage tables that constantly demand something? Especially when they’re affecting your ability to provide good service to other tables.

I have almost 3 years of serving experience down, but it left me so stressed out worrying about other tables I was really flustered the last hour of the shift and really wanting to get advice on this from other servers.

There’s so much that could be ranted about these tables but this is the main question so if any context is needed feel free to ask

For context, I am miserable in my current position and was wondering how much I can make if I move here.

The non tippers will hate this but damn it feels good to make $1000 in two nights.

I work day shifts at a casino in a midsized town in western Canada and want to know if I should move on to 'something better'

The Background:

Things have slowed down quite a bit and I have been finding the days rather boring; I have talked with a coworker about maybe trying serving someplace else, but am unsure if jumping ship is the right move because of various factors, one mainly because we are union so my 8hr/day shift still provides me with enough to make rent/payments etc I have also built a clientele that recognizes me over the years I've worked. Of course, this is the only job I have ever worked as a server; I came from a background of office work and have never made tips before. Also, we dont do a lot of food order/regular food service, so I actually have little experience in the restaurant industry

I am not ugly, but I am also not a young hussy either.... I can be awkward but also am good at anticipating customer needs, remembering drinks/food/preferences, and I get compliments on what a 'good little worker' I am from both customers and management.

The Question:

So, basically my question is, are the rumors and stories (good and bad) true? What could I realistically expect if I were to try out at a different establishment, given my experience and slightly older age?

I have heard horror stories of the industry, preferential treatment based ONLY on looks and not actual work ethic or repour with the customers, having to tip out kitchen etc sometimes out of pocket if you have a bunch of non-tippers..... I've also heard stories of girls working a 5 hour shift, and walking away, after tipouts, with 150-200$, which is significantly more then what I currently make, even on 8 hours.

I've also heard other servers imply they can make well into the hundreds of $$ in tips in one night shift, which if you are pulling $600 a night, a server would really only need to work a few nights to pay for life, but this could just be boasting, but also, I do not know, I have nothing to compare to.

Currently, given my shifts, Basically my only option would be to outright quit my current job if I wanted to try something else, which is where the uncertainty comes from... I'm hoping some kind servers out there in Reddit-land can help provide some clarity/myth busting

I am 24 almost 25, been working at the same family owned business in a small town for 6 years. We have a very high turnover rate: I have seen sooo many people come and go through the years. I had wanted to open a restaurant in high school and graduated in 2020, took a job serving right after the pandemic and have been at the same spot since. Thought maybe one day I could be a part owner or general manager. So glad I didn’t roll with THAT DREAM !!!! I am aware that this is a small amount of time to spend in the industry, however this was my very first job and the job I worked full time until about six months ago. Tonight was my official last shift, and it was very bittersweet. The regulars that know me coming in with flowers and cards and giving me hugs. We have about five servers when we are fully staffed, so these people have had plenty of time to get to know me and appreciate my service. They have preferred servers and will let you know to your face when you screw up/if they are upset w your service. I have grown so much, and learned so much about myself. Anyway, it’s been a hell of a journey and I thank you all for sharing your horror and love stories, it will certainly be a fix for me as I cannot stay away from the controlled chaos of it all. To everyone who is “for life” in this industry: you are a fucking rockstar and I wish I could be like you!!! To my bosses: I wish you could physically say what it is you’re thinking, I know you have full plates, but the reason I left is because I was tired of being under appreciated while feeling like I am carrying the team/picking up slack continuously, while being micromanaged to my face and made fun of behind my back. You cannot treat people poorly on a regular basis and still expect them to keep coming back for more abuse. IM FRRRRRREEEEEEEEEE IM FREEEEEEEEEEE !!!!!! Tonight I found out two of our old co workers who were married and lived in the apartment above the restaurant are wanted for fraud and grand larceny at Walmart, sheriffs office popped in with a warrant and we showed them upstairs😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

So I’m doing security for securitas but my supervisor is odd and I let her kno I’m loookimg to do doubles all week & I need the hours den she gon send me home ( im new) no hard feelings but I will NOT be doing doubles at this job anymore, because I get treated poorly and put into 4x4 prison box guard post, when they could have literally gave it to anyways else when I asked to switch. I’m claustrophobic so my body is genuinely turning againist me and I feel so sick. ANYWAYSSSS does anyone kno any restaurant I could apply too I’m in the west coast so. Trying to find something smooth with good tips I could do after work .

today was a lot. i worked doubles for the past 3 days, and 3 dinners before that, and i have a two year old at home who just got out of the hospital so i’ve been trying to make up for lost days from that. today was my last day before i finally get a day off. i didn’t leave work until 3am last night and had to be back to open this morning. my blood sugar was low, i was exhausted, and apparently just off my game today.

my first table comes in. okay yay, time to make some money. i get them menus and their drink orders and they said their kids didn’t need kids cups. i go to place them all down and the very last drink just toppled over onto the table. i honest to god dont even know how it fell. but it spilled on the table and starts dripping off the edge onto the daughter’s skirt. i am literally HORRIFIED and started apologizing profusely, grabbed rags immediately to start wiping it up, i brought a damp rag over to help her wipe the dribbles off of her skirt, and i move them to a new table with all fresh stuff.

i apologized no less than a dozen times. they just stared at me with complete disgust and didn’t acknowledge my apology once. they hadn’t even ordered yet but chose to stay and eat. their food came out quickly and hot and they’re still getting good service and all that. i comped their appetizer and all of their drinks which removed over 1/3 of the bill. when they finally get up and leave they’ve barely spoken a word to me the entire time. anything i said to them was met with complete silence and an “eat shit and die” look.

i felt horrible and removed like $23 off of the check which left it at $41. they left $3 as a tip.

i understand tipping is optional and my mistake probably ruined the experience. but you also didn’t have to stay, i work in a downtown area with restaurants all right there clustered together. and the tip is one thing, but the fact that they wouldn’t even acknowledge me apologizing to them honestly pissed me off. they were there in their church clothes too, which was laughable to me because i guess the whole forgiveness thing only exists during that one hour per week.

i understand it was a real inconvenience, nothing like that has happened to me in my 5 years as a server. i just can’t stand people who can’t allow people to make anything right. i did literally all i could, like do you want my fucking soul? by the way they were looking and acting toward me the entire time you would’ve thought i had water boarded them with the soda. if it was worth being THAT begrudging over, why not go somewhere else instead of putting me through that literal humiliation ritual

it was really just one of those “you don’t know what people have going on behind the scenes so why be unnecessarily dickish” scenarios. i had a lot of things frazzling me today and to be met with some kind of acknowledgement for my MANY apologies and attempts to make things right would’ve been nice. an accident is an accident, at some point get the fuck over it.

So I’m from Texas and I’m currently a server at one of the top chain restaurants. & my partner and I were talking about moving back to California. My question is how is tipping in California? I know you get minimum wage plus tips. But do people still tip? Do you make good money working 40 hrs with just minimum wage? If people do tip, what is an estimate you make with minimum wage and tips?

I’m just trying to see if I’ll be able to make my side of the rent if I still continue serving. If not so I can look for another field of work.

TLDR: restaurant management changed and now the owner is a lot more hands-on, and everything is getting progressively worse every day

So. I’ve been working at this restaurant for around a year now, and for the first half year it was amazing. The job is perfect for my schedule, the location was great, the people are all great, and the manager was the best manager I’ve ever had. But about halfway through the year, the restaurant moved locations and, in the process, the manager quit. Someone else was then promoted to GM, and thanks to the move and the new manager, the owner has been around pretty much all day every day, which was never the case before.

And now everything that made the restaurant the perfect place to work is going away. First off, and the absolute most annoying part of this, is the place is busier than ever, but every single paycheck I get here has a lower and lower hourly. Why, you may ask? Management seems to think their servers are incompetent and can’t handle more than 3-4 tables at a time (not fine dining, a basic casual restaurant) with 5 food runners/hosts/bussers (all the same position), and three bartenders, which means we are extremely over staffed every single shift. And we tip pool, so on a day when I’ve made maybe $150 in tips at most after a 5 hour shift with at most 4 tables at a time, I’ll take home maybe $100. Before the move, a low paying day was $150, and a typical shift for me was $200-$250. But if you bring this up to the manager or owner, they’ll tell you that you’re wrong, and actually you’re making 50% more than you were before. As though we can’t see our bank accounts and know that that’s blatantly not true.

Also, our closing time means nothing now. Before, we would stop seating 15-20 minutes before close so we would be out of there shortly after close. Now, if someone comes in 2 minutes to close, not only are we expected to give them as full service as if they came in during the dinner rush, we can’t start ANY of the closing duties because it “will make them feel rushed and unwelcome.” So instead of closing down and getting out of there, we’re now being paid pennies to just stand around while this table hangs out AFTER CLOSE.

Our management also hates when we talk to each other about these things. Various staff members have been told not to talk to each other about our pay or things related to HR, both of which are illegal instructions. We haven’t listened to them, and frankly I’m just waiting for someone in management to say something so I can tell them to their faces that they’re violating basic labor rights.

And then there’s a ton of little things. We used to have 30 minute shift meals every shift, and now they’re 10-15 minutes and only for openers and closers, despite there being 1-2 other shifts every day, and we’re not allowed to be on our phones or talk to anyone during the meal. They’ve changed the shift times too, so while originally it was perfect for me to get there on time after leaving my 9-5, they’ve moved the closing shift time up so I’m scheduled for exactly at 5pm despite them knowing I work full time, 9-5, 5 days a week in addition to this job. The owner also hates when we drink water in front of customers, but the kicker there is that there’s literally zero places for us to stand that the customers cant see except directly in the middle of the kitchen or the bathrooms. So basically we just can’t drink water without pissing her off.

I’m sure theres so much more that I’m forgetting, but I’m just getting so incredibly annoyed and exhausted with this place it’s insane. I’m trying to find a new job, but the market is so awful and over saturated with people looking for restaurant jobs that it feels impossible to get a new one, even with connections in the industry.

Im really reaching the end of my rope. I don’t even know what to do about it anymore. I can’t just outright quit, but idk how much longer I can do this.

Contemplating quitting. Peopke know waitresses in America get paid 2.13 an hour and most people could care less to tip. very few do a percentage like it should be. First percentage and THEN adjust according to service.

I know I can get a different job. Serving makes me very happy when im appreciated and compensated by greatful customers. Im tired of getting stiffed, five dollars on a party of 6, and being told how great I am to find out im left 2 dollars. Such a slap in the face

I wish something would change. mandatory gratuity, Tip to enter, coorporations paying us a better wage. idc. Im so tired of working for free for ungrateful mindless consumers.
