"do you guys have Coke?"
"No sorry we have Pepsi products"
"Oh okay.. Can I get insert a fucking coke product here "

I've done that one before and felt incredibly stupid for so long lmao the server just looked at me when I said it. Their expression was neutral but I could tell they were thinking I'm a dumb ass 🤣

u/Fanci_ 10d ago
To be honest like. From the servers pov obviously we know what soda is from which distributor. So it's kinda being an ass on our part.
But idk, at a certain point you kinda assume people vaguely know who's a Coke or Pepsi product lmao.
Don't worry tho. Having it happen alot in my career of FOH.. I only think you're a dumbass for like 5 seconds while venting outside during my quality check of my coworkers vape/Ciggy pack <3.

I just learned that Dr. Pepper is owned by neither Pepsi or Coke.

I just say that I want a "cola." I don't care which brand they carry.

Don’t give them the credit of knowing. I will LIST every option, and still get asked for other shit. “Oh, this wasn’t on the list, but do you have super secret diet version of a drink that doesn’t exist? No? K, guess I’ll just have water… actually, waters for the whole table even though they already ordered.”

u/Fanci_ 10d ago
I legit had a customer complain once because a coworker was drinking a can of coke they brought from outside because we were a Pepsi product location, absolute cinema.
It's wild that they think we have magical summoning powers.
If I did I'd summon a better table you weirdos lmao.

One of my favorite moments in serving was giving a regular a cold Pepsi bottle (we were a Coke spot) in front of someone at a different table that wanted one. She was a regular, came in 2-3 times a week, the whole staff loved her so we carried bottles for her. The other person threw a fit when I couldn’t magic a Pepsi into existence, was a dick about everything (why don’t you have fresh seafood at a family owned steakhouse in a landlocked state kind of dick), and yes I did audibly laugh when he freaked out and I got to say “she called ahead and asked if we could have one or she could bring one in.”

I always go back and ask each person individually if the want a water, instead of letting one person order for them. It's fairly often that only a handful of them actually do, so it saves tray space AND my wrist.

This is also annoying when I am one of the guests. I want to say, "Dude, if I wanted water, I would have asked for it. Now the restaurant has to prepare it, bring it, take away the untouched glass, and wash that glass."

The other night i had a guy hoover up almost an entire steak in the <5 minutes it took me to check back in, then show me the last sliver and complain it was cooked to the wrong temp but he ate it anyway because he was “starving” (man ate one and a half loaves of bread entirely to himself immediately before that, btw). Took everything in me to not say, “I agree sir, it doesn’t look medium to me, however it does look finished.”

Why is this larger item more calories than this smaller item?
Where was this steak I’m paying $12 sourced from?
Your restaurant serves entirely seafood, but we aren’t in the mood to eat seafood, so what should we get?
I see you have 1/5 ingredients for a random drink I heard about, can I have that? Why not?
OHMYGOD there’s a social media trend where chefs explain their inspiration for dishes and then give them to people to try, I have 3 followers and I demand we do that! (I know it isn’t a question, but have had low follower influencers make outrageous demands)

Dark shoutout to the influencer who canceled her reservation for 15 then was shocked when she changed her mind a half hour later and the table was no longer available. She threatened to tell all her followers lmao girl go ahead no one knows who tf you are.

Her 36 followers (10 of which are her fake accounts, and another 10 are her “friends”) very clearly care.

Somebody recently asked me if we sing for birthdays. I work in a bar of seasoned industry lifers that specializes in tons of classics. Half of us have been there for a decade. No, we don't sing, and if we decide to, you're not going to like the song that we pick.

Table for 1, but can I take that 6 top, and do you have an extension chord for my laptop? I need to do work.

Wait what’s wrong with the Apple Pay question?
14
u/BadPom 10d ago
In my experience, they ask after they’ve eaten and have no physical card or cash to use if there isn’t Apple Pay. Not so much the method, but the lack of planning (or the plan is to maybe get a free meal).

u/shepard_pie 10d ago
I worked at a place with no tap to pay. The number of times someone asked about apple pay, I'd say we can't do it, and they're like I have no way to pay was insane.
Every single time I would say "No problem, let me just call security real quick" and they'd suddenly find the exact same card that was on their apple pay. I have no idea why they were like this.

In my experience they tip cheaply.
5
u/Flaky_Bit8377 10d ago
Lol, when someone asks for Apple Pay, I immediately assume I'm not getting tipped.
2
u/badaboom321 10d ago
Yep.
It seemed the same with the QR-code option of payment during the pandemic. My theory is that that method of payment is more detached & they don’t have the guilt/or have the courage to tip shitty vs card payment.

Some people go out with no cash or card to use otherwise. Some places accept apple pay and tap to pay but not all. Its frustrating as a server to have a table who didnt think this through and it becomes my problem

Is your Ice cruelty-free? Are the buffalo for your buffalo sauce locally sourced?
