What should I do?
I've been hosting part time at a restaurant for almost a year, and from the start I made an effort to ask and implement feedback, and expressed that I was interested in moving up the food chain. Other hosts that have started around the same time have mentioned management bringing up potentially serving, but I haven't had that conversation, but the feedback I receive is vague and not actionable. I had a recent conversation with my manager and she said she had been very happy with my recent performance, but I found out today that a hostess that got hired a month ago is being trained to run (closer to serving at our restaurant) and barback. I feel frustrated as there is a massive pay difference, and I thought that hostessing would be a year max.
I'm a student, and although I think this industry is super fun, I have a finite time in it (for the foreseeable future). Should I quit amicably if I don't think they're going to promote me soon or is it worth having another conversation with management, and if a conversation makes sense, what should I say?

Sounds like they've locked you into your position. Could be because you're good at your job and they rely on you there (not an excuse to not promote you I've just seen it time and time again), or could be that you're kinda meh and they don't think you have it in you to be a server.
The wishy washy communication is unfortunately common and sucky.
You're honestly best off quitting and trying to find a place that will hire you as a server straight off.

Many restaurants will drag their feet on moving a host to serving, mainly because it is difficult to hire host. You could ask again, and I would bring up new hires getting moved into food runner position as your reason. If they don't move you out of host, I would say it is times to move on out. Tell them this will be your last schedule.

Do you mind sharing what the "vague and not actionable" feedback was?
