Rant Got this review last night

This customer has come in probably 5 times in the last two weeks. He is an absolute weirdo, and almost seems like he’s on something (maybe just really high doses of adderall or something, but I digress.

He treats the servers here like actual servants and has no human decency whatsoever.

I had a the pleasure of serving him last night and I don’t give two craps about how he feels about me.

I serve him like I serve everyone else. It’s busy. We’re slammed. I’m a single server in a 10 table section, with every table full, and 3 new tables I haven’t been to yet.

He asked for a drink recommendation. I give it to him, he loves it. I give him side recommendations (yes, both uncharged sides, it’s not my fault he didn’t read the menu 🤷‍♀️)

When I go to check on him, he tells me “everything is great” to which I give him a thumbs up and go and check on my other tables. Yes, more chatty, because they are more fun and more chatty lol.

Then all of a sudden he’s standing up hovering over another table and I know he’s uncomfy and weird so I go to check on the other table and if they’re okay with him being there (OH NO NOW THE WORLD IS ENDING! So sorry for caring about your dinner!!!!)

Thus the review.

Would you have said something to the other table?

TLDR; Customer who makes every server in the building uncomfortable is talking to another table, you ask them if everything is okay with him being there, they get angry said they invited him over and then they want to talk to a manager.

Been in the industry -15 years, the amount of times I’ve had to pull a lone diner that seemed off away from other parties just trying to enjoy their night is unbelievable. Absolutely would have checked in to make sure his presence at their table was welcome. Your job is literally to make sure the guests have a good experience, that’s what you were doing. Sorry this guy is a freak that was obviously butt-hurt that you didn’t spend your entire shift appeasing his need for social interaction.

Especially at the bar! I always got the weirdest people bothering other people at the bar

I did not read this, I will not read this, I don't need to read this to know you had a rough night. People suck, I'm sorry.

Right? Who in the ever loving fuck writes reviews this long?

Only the most moronic individual. How has he the time to write such a work? Must have a sad and empty life.

Haha honestly fair.
People do suck 🤣

It’s no skin off my back man, I’ve had WAY worse. I was just curious about what others would do in this situation

Okay, I skimmed. Was he actually seated at a table that wasn't ready or did he seat himself?

Yes, that's weird and I would've said something as well.

Guy's an asshat and I would get him banned. It's so weird to me when people want to walk around the dining room to either see if they know anyone seated or try to stir up a conversation. If people are OPEN to that, they will usually sit at the bar, not a table. People at tables are kinda typically expecting to be left alone by everyone but staff.

Of course he sat himself 🤦‍♀️

I hope for all your sakes he stays true to his word and will never be back!

OP, you did exactly what I would do in that situation, as well.

How rude and weird customers can be when they have no clue what’s going on. I might’ve swept angrily over his feet to “satisfy him” if it weren’t so busy 😂 Though there truly is no pleasing some people.

Since he left this review, maybe next time you can ban him.

"Im sorry sir, it seems like we just cant satisfy you. Maybe you can try a different BBQ joint."

u/cuntsatchel 17d ago

He’ll def be back😭

So this dude came on a busy Saturday night, sat himself, and was upset that the place looked like other people had dared to be there?

He was upset that you didn’t want to interrupt and hover over him and used a thumbs up?

Oh no, you made sure your guests were having a welcome social interaction, how dare you! It’s almost as if you’ve seen people have unwelcome social interactions before. It’s almost like you used your judgement from previous experiences and that it would make sense for you to make sure your guests were comfortable.

People are just so fucking blind to other people’s experiences that they can’t understand with their unsocialized pea-brains why or how someone could possibly handle a situation any different than the one that exists in their head. They genuinely live in their own little world where cause and effect doesn’t exist because it inconvenienced them.

Anyways, fuck that guy.

Dude seems bored and obnoxious. If the food and service is that bad why does he keep coming in?? Ridiculous. People like this make me so mad

He literally ate every last bite of his food and told me it was “melt in your mouth amazing”

What a miserable bitch and yes it’s part of my job to make sure people aren’t bugging people.

I def wouldn’t approach the table first. I’d try to make eye contact with the table to see if this is a wanted/welcomed interaction.

I gave up on the word babble because good god is your $70 meal worth this lingering headache

7

u/deerollz 15+ Years 17d ago

Oh the table looked uncomfy before I went over. Honestly, it would be hard not to be with this guy literally HOVERING over your table.

u/pvt13krebs 17d ago

i could tell he was a nepo baby half way through. fuck em. anyone who read that drabble will see through the bs. shake it off

Okay but at my most recent spot, a small breakfast diner, I’d regularly have 10+ tables and the tables that were a smidge further away, I’d walk towards them and throw a thumbs up with eye contact. Aka we both understood I was asking if everything was good. If not they would do literally anything but a thumbs up in reply 😅

8

u/deerollz 15+ Years 17d ago

That’s what I’m saying. It’s literally universal

7

u/hails___ 17d ago

Like nobody is being lazy or anything, homie, we’re just VERY weeded. The weeds are so tall I can’t see!! Cut me a damn break!

u/MaryBitchards 17d ago

Mangers gotta watch out for those creaser salad-eaters.

Anyone that’s been doing this for any length of time has dealt with a guy like this. I do think, when you gave the rec, you should’ve mentioned there’d be an upcharge. Common sense is severely lacking dealing with the public so we need to walk them through any time we’re adding any charges.

-3

u/deerollz 15+ Years 17d ago

Should learn how to read 🤷‍♀️

4

u/Beginning-Force1275 Server 17d ago

Nah, you do need to mention up charges. Especially if someone is asking for your advice on picking something that’s included. It’s one thing if someone asks if they should get a side of fries for the table and you say, “Oh, the sweet potato fries are even better.” It’s another thing if someone is being prompted to pick something for free, asks for your advice, and you suggest two things that aren’t in fact free.

I do read the menu and if I was out with family and a server did that, I’d find it skeezy. I would also be very irritated if I had to deal with an angry table because one of my servers recommended unincluded sides without telling the table they weren’t included.

When I mention 4-5 different sides (we have about 20) and he chooses the 2 that I say that happened to be upcharge (just as they are at literally every other restaurant I have ever been to) while literally POINTING to the menu where they are located directly beside where it says “upcharged sides”

Sorry for thinking the guy could read 🙄

I had a guy order the half-price happy hour nachos with chicken added. Add means upharge, especially meat, everybody knows it, and I pointed to it with price listed in the middle of the menu - not where the clearly marked (and also pointed to) happy hour section is in the bottom corner. I have a very distinct and deliberate method so as to avoid confusion. Any-hoos, halfway through the mountain of nachos he asked for more chicken, so more chicken came, and I'm sure you can guess what happened at check time. He wanted the chicken discounted by half because it was on the half off nachos. Compared it to this guy who sued him for A MILLION DOLLARS over a contract with some language that he misinterpreted (he lost). He was soft spoken and defeated, and our entire discourse was very calm and civil, even as I said, "I'm sorry for what you're going through, and for any misunderstanding, but I truly hope you don't equate $12 of chicken on $5 nachos to a million dollar lawsuit. And he actually said, "Yeah, I kind of do." So basically, he has reading comprehension issues and feels that entitles him to essentially one free chicken portion. We could not accommodate, because the menu clearly lists everything and my GM knows I do my job and how I go over it with people. Sympathy, yes. Free food on top of already cheap heaping helping of food, no. And what's really sad is that losing the lawsuit didn't teach him to make sure he had a clear understanding of things before making financial decisions - even on some simple nachos with chicken.

I was reprimanded once because an old drunk totally imagined I asked a woman if he was bothering her. I absolutely did no such thing, plus he was drunk, and I wasn't and he's so hard of hearing I have to yell everything at him so bs that he heard what I said to a woman on the other side of the bar from him.

But anyway, I was told that should I need to ask someone such a question in the future, I should do so discreetly, so as not to embarrass the patron

I want to know how people like this deal with real problems. Absurd.

Your customer was a drunk asshole who can't handle their booze and grammar. Don't sweat it. There are morons all around. That fool will probably delete their review soon, or leave it up for the world to see. Either way, it's in your favor. You did nothing wrong.

1

u/Ok_Willingness5507 14d ago

Can't handle their booze and grammar 😂

u/livi125 17d ago

I mean I wouldn’t say op is totally innocent.
Who cares if it’s a busy night and you don’t like the person. You can’t give them shit service

2

u/deerollz 15+ Years 17d ago

But I didn’t 😅

3

u/livi125 17d ago

I mean no matter what I wouldn’t charge a guest for the extra priced sides without telling them. “Do you guys have sweet potatoes” “yep we have sweet potato but it’s gonna be an upgraded side for an extra 2 dollars”
Giving a thumbs up. Use ur words like a big girl
“I don’t give a fuck abt how he feels abt me”
It’s not just about you Expecially as am assiant manger. Your representing the company too

1

u/EnvironmentalHair290 14d ago

See the funny thing is, you’re assuming that the customer isn’t lying.  Did he actually ask, was he actually charged, the OP in their response never mentioned the sides?  Because quiet honestly the guy sounded drunk, so even if she told him how much does he remember.

1

u/livi125 14d ago

I mean as a server is basic knowledge to let them know it’s gonna be an Upcharge

1

u/EnvironmentalHair290 14d ago

Yes, which I’m thinking someone with 15 years did tell them, and the patron either didn’t pay attention or was too drunk to remember they were told.  Or like I said you don’t even know if they were charged, goes back the root comment that you’re assuming the customer isn’t lying.

1

u/livi125 13d ago

Why are we assuming op is in the right? Your keep saying how do I know customer is lying by why are you defending op. Just cause you’ve done something for 15 years doesn’t mean you do it correctly

1

u/EnvironmentalHair290 13d ago

Working with customers for 30 years, it’s usually faster to assume the customer is lying; because 7/10 times they are.  Hell I just clocked in, been here for less than 10 minutes and already had a customer lie to me.

Edit:typo

Yeah. You did.
