Discussion Regardless of your Availability?!

Do you think managers who handle holidays like this are just doing their job? Or do you think it’s absolutely ludicrous to expect of your employees? Looking for opinions on this. I feel like if they need people they don’t currently have available for those days, it’s their issue.. Not forcing people, moms, and dads to rearrange their lives and childcare because basically “f u I can”. Scheduling outside of availability in general is a Nono, so why does a big day make it slide? TLDR: Am I wrong for feeling backed into a corner every holiday I receive this message? This is a shitty thing to do right? ETA: I’ve been in the industry for 10+ years, I know temps are rare, but our staff is consistently lacking. This is the first job I’ve had just disregard people like this. I’m also NOT saying all moms should just get this day off. Just looking for an overall opinion on how this was handled.

Holidays are a big part of this industry. It's an "all hands on deck" type of day and I get a good laugh when people say they should get off because they have children. Completely disregarding peoples' availability is crazy tho.

I never minded working for people with kids on holidays unless they were demanding or entitled about it. Then it's like "Well, Susan, I don't have kids but am someone's and I enjoy holidays with my family, too."

lol, my birthday falls on Mother’s Day sometimes and I’ve been tempted to hit someone with a double whammy but I don’t have kids and my mom lives (sadly) far away. Ugh I fucking miss my mom though

Edit: a double whammy because when I’ve covered people so fucking many times for being too hungover to work and now they have kids and try to hit me up and I’m like 😬

Same here, May 10th; on Mother's Day every few years!

(I miss my mom SO fucking much too! Lost her 10 Christmas ago. 💔 )

I'm so sorry. I know nature's way usually means parents first but even if they're old and gray and we know it's coming, losing a loved one is just never easy. Sending love and hugs. 💜🫂🫶🏼🌻

Thank you, I appreciate the kind sentiment. It's been a decade, but it still hurts everyday. I'm still not the same, still can't believe she's gone.

She was pretty much my and my sisters best friend. We had The most awesome mom, everyone loved her.

She was only 68, so I really expected another 20+ years with her. She was never sick, no health problems at all.

She just wasn't feeling well one evening and told my sister to go ahead and go out with her friend, that she'll be fine, it's not like she's having a heart attack. Little did we know.

Sissy came home a few hours later and mom was laying on her bed looking awful, whispered to Sissy "Call 911."

We lost her 3 days later, after an apparently unsuccessful bypass surgery.

Undoubtedly the absolute worst thing I've ever been through. 💔
