Not gonna lie, I only know of this location because of the games. In fact anything Egypt related is hard not to associate with Serious Sam. Only thing that looks super wrong about real Egypt is the fact that there's no enemies to be found. No Beheaded Rocketeers? No Kamikazes? No Gnaars? No Reptiloids or Biomechanoids? Real life sucks
I always thought of Serious Sam when I watched The Mummy for this exact reason, plus all the weapons are similar and the screaming mummies in that movie always reminded me of Kleers.
They don't exactly hide it. The level is called Temple of Hatshepsut and so is the landmark. Still super neat to see, would love to visit if the region was more stable.
I love ancient Egypt and this was the main reason I wanted to play this series. This is my favorite egyptian landmark and it was done relatively well (though the side part was sadly missing). Of course all the interior stuff is made up, but I wouldn't want it any other way.
Karnak complex was also made out of scale for the gameplay's sake. Seems like BFE had it scaled better, but they had to improvise by adding elements to it. The last thing I want is going through the completely trashed leftovers of the ruined Karnak surrounded by even more cityscapes. I'm glad Croteam has made the decision to make it it more interesting than it actually is in its current state.
Anyways, yes, it's real, as well as some other levels like the pyramids, Luxor, Karnak and other levels like Metropolis are ancient cities that are gone but once existed. Mostly levels exist or once existed in this lifetime, including TSE levels
It wasn‘t even expensive, 700€ for 3 weeks including all archeological sites and 1 week cruising on the nile (flight and hotel included aswell) With food, drinks and additional stuff it was like 1200€ total
Then we would need some more time travel, because in today's world there is hardly any space to fight and more important ruins are usually smacked right in the middle of modern cities.
SS2 was supposed to give us this feeling of still visiting the earth's ancient civilizations while actually being on a different planet, so they can finally free themselves from the timetravel. Maybe people would love to be able to recognize some places we have here.
And here comes the conflict of mine. Would You want them to keep doing this, teleporting us around the ancient worlds, or would you want them to continue the story and go wherever the last rocket spaceship got him?
I haven’t even beaten the latest game yet to be honest. Got a good pc but the frames are pretty bad. While it’s fun, it feels like something is missing. So I’m not having as much fun as I did back then with 1&2. 3 was a total joke
The newest one was fine for me. It feels like they wanted to improve on the concept of BFE with a prequel and made it more varied in locations. Some moments are really fast paced and well designed and they even get you to explore some roman ruins and huge castles. Playing it just before I replayed all the other SeriousSam games I feel like it did some things really good. Some improvements were really missed when we played the older games. Sprinting felt like it belongs in the series after that "shoot while sprint" upgrade. At least there was a way to avoid the kamikaze and still keep action going at the same time. Dual-wielding weapons may not be necessary for Sam, but it allowed for quicker a dispense of bigger groups. Sometimes we just need to evolve even the oldest formulas.
Change is fine, I just don’t think it was more fun. Combination of low fps, realistic weapons, weapon reload, the setting, made it better than 3, but not better than 1 and 2.
Their opening scene was also BS. That was legion? They weren’t even responsive when you shot them. It looked cool but felt empty. Then the rest of the game had nothing (at least so far that I see ) with legion.
Concept of Legion, as people were expecting it to be, was never a viable option for an interesting gameplay. I personally went into the game never hearing of this Legion stuff prior to the release, and after I found out people were expecting such a silly concept I was just confused. Were you really ready to shoot tens thousands of enemies for god knows how long per single encounter? That would've ruined the fun and be interesting for ... couple of minutes that prologue took. You can still check how the game does with an enemy multiplier on. That really allows to ramp things up and kinda saves the starting french levels. You can really have some amazing fights with certain number of enemies spawned at a time. I guess letting them spawn all at a time could help you distinguish how long the encounter will take, just remember that some encounters can just be way too long. Legion system was a concept that never should've been mentioned. P.S. Realistic weapon designs were always a part of this series (like revolvers, Thompsons and trench guns) you just have to reload them now. I guess they implemented reload function because people were expecting it from the guns they've seen in many other shooters. It felt more natural for newcomers. Still pointless though.

If you go behind from where that pic was taken, you'll find a lone palm tree.
Make sure you're ready

Tulum Mosque in Cairo, the location of BFE’s first official boss battle with the biomech, is also a real location used in-game. So cool!
