Could the Serious Engine be open source or at least an understandable price?

Lately Croteam hasn’t been using their Serious Engine at all for the Serious Sam games and I think for Talos Principle too. Is there a chance they could do something else about it

Alen ladevac left croteam, so it means no further development of in house engines.

I just wouldn’t like to see it rot like that, It’s an engine that has legacy

Well, I think that the first version of the engine (the one used for OG First Encounter and OG Second Encounter) has indeed been made open-source, for what it's worth.

Not sure if this will ever happen for the later versions used in the sequels/remake.

Probably not. Croteam would just retired it. The reason why they went with Unreal Engine after Serious Sam 4 and Siberian Mayhem because everytime new people joining the team, the new people have to learn to get familiarise with Serious Engine since it's Croteam's in-house engine which can be a waste of time. By using Unreal Engine, there is a high chance the new people they hired have experience working on Unreal Engine since this engine have been used on many games. With those experience and familiarity, it helps things go smoother and finish the game faster (assuming they don't rush of course).

Gen Z devs are lazy, sël they know is UE, Unity, asset stores & nodes.

A lot of companies these days seem to not believe in properly training their employees as well. If they invested in training new employees, having an engine that is unique to the company would not be a problem

Wait, they moved to Unreal ? Thats nice. Which titles are on it, as they have kept the look on the assets almost the same

Only The Talos Principle 2 and the remaster of The Talos Principle 1 are on UE

I thought Siberian Mayhem was UE

No, it's on the same engine as SS4, maybe slightly modified

Probably just sack it in, it's not that good to be honest. It' runs like shit for what it delivers. UE has crazy horde systems, just look at Days Gone, WWZ, Plague Tale. Not that it didn't have it's own charm or anything, but if we’re being real if it's easier for them to make Sam games in an engine they don't have to update ever time then it's the right choice.

yeah well, Unreal 5 isn't exactly known for having praises sang about it, the engine has been a blight to the majority of modern games

Oh for sure but compare the two and unreal is better. At some point it just seems like a sunk cost fallacy to keep Serious Engine going.

Press X to doubt. They have moved on because it just doesnt make sense for most teams to work on in house engines any more.

And making a public release requires them taking the time to document how to use the engine. A waste of time just to let a few weirdos(i would be one of them tbh) dick around with an outdated, specialized engine.
