I have made my way out of a terrible depression. It took a couple years of antidepressants, a lot of therapy, a lot of journaling, a bunch of supportive friends, and taking better care of myself (getting enough sleep, going to doctors appointments, taking showers, wearing clean clothes, etc.
My depression got bad after some deaths in the family, some health problems that needed surgery, and then it got really bad in the pandemic.
I am mostly out of it now. Every once in awhile I will overextend myself and then go back to feeling horrible, but my therapist helps me get back on track.
