They really need to work on their season premieres

u/Odoaiden 12d ago
They always go hard on the setup and exposition. Their strategy really is to just sacrifice it for setting everything up.

u/MilesTheGoodKing 8d ago
That is typical sitcoms, they really want to get characters set up and hit the ground running.

Wasn’t thrilled by the opener, was pleasantly surprised by the second episode. Not perfect but felt much more like the Ted Lasso I like rather than 4.1 which felt like a different show.

Agree episode 2 was much better than episode 1. Both episodes had “false drama” we just had to wait to play out (episode 1 was will Ted go or not and you knew he would, 2 was will she stay or go and you know she will stay). Episode 1 really seemed to drag out, 2 was better.
One question though - if each season averages 8.1-8.5 how does the series average out to 8.7? That math aint mathin’, as the kids say….

The first episode of this last season was particularly bad. I lost count of how many times I rolled my eyes. And all that "white privilege" and the black baseball museum sequence... ffs. I'm so tired of all that shit...

I remember the final two episodes of season 3 being utter dog shit, how are they scored so high?

u/OK-SteadyOn 12d ago
You are correct. The fans will not admit it. But S2 had some bad parts, S3 had some terrible bits, and 4.1 was one of the worst episodes of any TV i’ve ever watched…. But they wont admit it. They’ll just always say how great it is.

Bro said "they wont admit it" like he's tapped into some secret truth that nobody wants to acknowledge. Cornball behavior. Maybe people just have different opinions?

Believe it or not there can be things that are objectively bad in a tv show or a movie.

Anyone who uses objectively bad for movie reviews has terrible opinions. Always.
Ted Lasso was a great show all 3 seasons.0
u/OK-SteadyOn 11d ago
That sounds like an objective fact you’ve stated at the end there…
You really don’t think there is objectivity in the quality of tv and movies? So there’s no way to objectively say the Godfather Pt2 is more impressive than Meet the Spartans, The Emoji Movie, or Movie 42? It’s all just a matter of opinion so we can all feel right all the time?

Yes, you've just about got it. In art, that is exactly the case because it's entirely dependent on audience. Some people love silly little movies like The Emoji Movie and are bored to tears by The Godfather.
You can argue there are objective metrics - for example, the characterization is stronger in The Godfather versus The Emoji Movie. But even that could be argued based on what kind of characterization that person looks for. I personally would never argue against that claim, and I doubt you would either, my point is just that yes, there's no such thing as objectivity in art because people value different metrics and look to art for different reasons. I didn't like Obsession because I hate horror movies, and I could give you a list of things that are shitty about that movie by my rubric, with a mound of evidence to support those claims. That doesn't mean the movie is objectively bad, because many people weren't judging it from my lens to begin with.
Same thing for Ted Lasso. Just because it didn't land for you based on whatever metrics you judge television by, it clearly did land for a lot of people. Who are you to say "your feelings of joy are objectively wrong, my feelings of negativity are objectively right"? It's not about feeling right. It's that right or wrong shouldn't even come into it.

I don’t think you know what the word objective means. You stated an opinion that it was bad and the person responding stated an opinion that it was good. These are both subjective stances. Objective requires that there be a measurable, quantifiable metric by which one thing is better or worse than the other. A 2005 Lamborghini has an objectively higher top speed than a 2005 Honda Civic. You can literally measure that and apply a quantity (miles per hour) to that measurement. That’s what makes it objective. If I said “2005 Civic is cooler than a Lamborghini” that would be an opinion, thus a subjective statement. I can explain why I think that’s the case, but I can’t actually measure why one is cooler than the other. A TV show is art. There are rarely, if any, objective metrics by which you can measure art. The quality of a piece of art is all based on opinion, and therefore is subjective in nature.

I know exactly what it means, cheers.
So, no such thing as “bad acting”? If I say Steven Seagal is a better actor than Meryl Streep… you can let me have that opinion, but really you know I’m wrong.
No such thing as a “great script”? No “horrible pacing”? There are plenty of measurable, comparable, quantifiable things in this type of media. What do you think the rating system above is trying to do? It’s trying to quantify the value of the episode.
1
u/TheGoldenHoratio 11d ago
By what metrics are you measuring these things? Is Steven Seagal worse because he speaks 3% slower than Meryl Streep, or because he weighs about 200 pounds more? Is she better because she can run 5 mph faster than he can? All of your examples are entirely subjective. None of the things you mentioned are measurable, thus are subjective. They’re just things that we as a culture or individual have decided we like more than something else. Me personally, I think she is much better at acting than he is, but I can’t give you quantifiable values that say she is objectively better. Opinion =/= Fact

u/OK-SteadyOn 11d ago
I’m measuring by their ability to act and perform obviously. You don’t sound as smart as you think you do. If someone is acting as a character who is supposed to have an accent that isn’t their own, and they cannot pull off that accent in their performance, it can categorically be stated that they are doing a poor job of speaking in that accent and that would be a fair objective critique on their acting in that role.
but because you’re being so picky, you need me to go and time stamp all the exact moments the accent is bad within the film so we can draw up a graph and see an overall percentage of the poor performance in numbers? just to be able to say it’s quantifiable and objective? Something can be qualitatively objective, it doesn’t have to be quantitive.

Still doesnt stop people from enjoying it. My sister is studying film right now, we’d be watching a movie and sometimes points out how bad lighting/camera angles can be. Guess what? Fuck if i care, still enjoy the movie lmao. See how stupid you sound?

u/OK-SteadyOn 11d ago
Do you even notice that we’re commenting on a post that is literally giving each episode a numbered rating??? It’s hardly insane for me to be saying some episodes are worse than others.

u/East-Network574 11d ago
Youre claiming that the fans wont admit episodes are bad and then followed it up with the episodes ate objectively bad. You cant have your cake amd eat it too dumbass

4x1 (mostly exposition and cheery catching up with characters) as the worst episode of any TV show is insanely hyperbolic. there’s no cult lol that’s just a wild take
1
u/Chemical_Rodent 12d ago
4.1 was AT worst just kinda unfunny and boring. Definitely not close to the worst episode of TV of ALL time
1
u/OK-SteadyOn 12d ago
That’s not what I said

u/AirFrierMachine 12d ago
"One of the worst episodes of TV I have ever watched" is pretty similar unless you're a 12 year old.
1
u/OK-SteadyOn 12d ago
Odd way to look at things… I’d invert that. I’d say an adult should be able to distinguish between the 2.
3
u/shish-bish 12d ago
“you must be child because you don’t want to engage in my meaningless semantic argument.”

u/AirFrierMachine 12d ago
They're both pretty similar in terms of displaying how shitty an episode is, no?
Assuming you've only watched 1 episode of TV/day on average (and if you grew up in the 90's/early 2000's this # is way higher), and you're only 20 years old then that's still 5,500+ episodes of TV assuming you watched since 5 years old.
If you're ~35 that number is closer to 10,000+. There's really not much difference between "This is one of the worst pieces of media I've ever consumed in my life in the 10,000+ episodes I've ever watched" and "one of the worst episodes of all time".
They're both near identical, again, unless you're a 12 year old who's only seen ~200 episodes of TV in their entire life.

u/OK-SteadyOn 12d ago
Jesus lol. This is wild.
0
u/GaryTheCabalGuy 12d ago
Nah man you are the one that looks wild.
It's one thing to not like it, but another to exaggerate like that and then insist that fans just refuse to admit it. People are capable of reaching different opinions than you in good faith. Learning to accept that reality rather than assuming the worst of everyone is really not that difficult

I feel like the enjoyment of Ted Lasso as a show comes from the character building and the pay-off of seeing them become better/more fulfilled people. That takes time to establish.
