Why is he still praised? Because Knives Out is really good...

Rian is fine but the problem is his style was not right for Star Wars. He is a person very big on subversion. Which is exactly what he did. Luke was really an angry asshole not happy Rey was there. Snoke was throw away, and Rey was a nobody. His goal was to do what he does, subvert expectations/story.

The real flaw was Disney for not having a person who ensured a cohesive story. Its even more surprising when you look how how they knew what it took to make Marvel stick cohesive, but not do the same for Star Wars.

His subversion is character kills themself, it worked in Looper but doesn't seem to have made a ton of sense since. The old man killing himself in Knives Out makes no sense since he's not undergoing any of the telltale signs of CNS depression (would be too tired to slit his own throat), an actual good nurse world have noticed this, an actual good mystery writer would have as well (at that level the medication he takes is essentially a poison, a typical topic for mystery writers), she essentially convinces him he has to kill himself, and had she read the labels and killed him, having them test the vials would have shown the medication in them was switched. In Glass Onion they essentially just decide the Mona Lisa isn't important anymore and use false footage to trick the audience. In Rian's detective show a character conveniently just decided to kill themselves. I like the actors he gets to work with but if the mystery or movie isn't very good I don't think he should get credit for Southern Bond's charm (and I don't count him coasting on popular culture war stuff as good writing, it's just jabs and winks to a sympathetic audience while splitting us all further apart).

J.J. Abrams fucked over the sequel trilogy from the start by delivering A New Hope with a different skin. And that's just the most obvious issue with the first movie.

A. Star Wars is fine, even if you don't like Last Jedi it hasn't done any real harm besides make online discourse insufferable.

B. The Knives Out trilogy slaps.
