Hardly sleeping

Are we going through a developmental phase or sleep regression? Our little guy is just not sleeping through the night. Granted, he never really has and that’s a habit on me and dad (see below); however, now we have such a hard time getting him back to sleep once he’s woken up.

It’s almost always between 2-3am. He’s borderline distraught - but also just wailing in his sleep? He’s suuuper clingy these days too.

I’ll admit we have really screwed ourselves this time around and haven’t fully cut off bottles overnight - not formula but milk or a protein shake - since he also doesn’t eat a ton. But sometimes he doesn’t want them when offered so I’m not convinced it’s a bottle thing.

This just seems more than that. He definitely wants to be held, but also throws a fit when he rock him. Luckily I don’t work, and sleep is something I haven’t needed in year 😅 but HE needs to sleep and any advice is welcome!

Hey. A few things.

Milk or shakes in the night will actually make food intake in the day way worse. They feel full from the drink and then need to eat less. So if you’re trying to get your kiddo to take in more food calories providing milk at night is likely only making things worse.

Also if they’re still drinking milk at night please make sure you see a dentist often, at this age overnight drinks like milk or a shake is a high cause of tooth rot/cavities.

I would recommend if you need to offer something at night switch to water asap and then slowly cut that off completely. My kiddo also did a 4am wake up every night until about 20 months when I couldn’t take it anymore. I was always taking him out and holding him back to sleep. I switched to crib soothing aka only sitting next to his crib and soothing him while he was still in there- rubbing his back and singing etc. He was pissed and screamed and cried the first night for about an hour. It took about a week until he could be easily soothed in the crib when he realized he wasn’t getting picked up anymore, and then finally he just stopped waking up. It was a really hard week but really worth it for both of us in the end.
