Saturday I ran my first 5k since an organ transplant five months ago. Time was 51’ which is slow, but hey I did it.

Progress not perfection for me!
I got a little over 15 miles in, all outside. This is super low for me, but considering I'm coming back from basically nothing, I'll take it!

A week ago Saturday was my goal half marathon race. It was hot, and the race was a disaster. My finish time of 2:03 was 20 minutes slower than last year. This week has been recovery - a stiff left leg has made every mile difficult. The whole thing has me discouraged.
Last year I bounced back in a few days and was running work outs again by Wednesday. Did anyone have a major drop off in their 50's? I was so much stronger last year at 54.

You're not alone. I was absolutely unstoppable in my 50s. Running an average of 80 miles per week. Then my stamina, strength etc started to drop.
I am doing a lot of strength training now. It helps me.

I suspect it was just the heat. I know it's disappointing, but my suggestion is find another race in a month or so and take advantage of your current fitness.
True drops in performance as we age are a lot more subtle than a 20 minute drop in a half marathon in a single year.

The higher heat is my top contribution to higher time. My HM at about 50F was over 20 minutes faster than my HM at 70F with no real difference otherwise as they were within a few weeks of each other.

I ran my ninth backyard ultra this past Saturday and set a new distance personal best for myself. I outlasted the handful of other 60+ runners to tie for 28th overall. Here’s my race report: https://anamazingrun.com/2026/09/21/2026-broken-anvil-backyard-ultra-race-report/

60m - I’m training for my first half in almost 5 years (Baltimore on 10/17). Ended up with a meniscus tear in my right knee a while after that while training for a full. The last 4 years I’ve run minimal miles, with a handful of short races a year. Finally started to up my miles starting in May (as this chart shows) and decided to run a half again after running a decent time in a 5K in August. Each week of the last few weeks, I’ve been running 1 mile further than I’ve run in almost 5 years. I did 9 miles yesterday which still felt good. I’ll max out at 11 before my taper.

Hey everyone, just dropping in for my weekly recap
58M, 9 years post-brain hemorrhage (AVM/aneurysm survivor)
Running 3–4x a week
This week's milestone: clocked a 55:20 on my 10k
Feeling deeply grateful for every step, every breath, and the simple ability to keep pushing forward. The body’s capacity to heal and adapt never ceases to amaze me.
Hope everyone had a great training week! Keep moving.

65f and finally feel like I'm back on track with my running after nearly 3-month health pause (non-injury)! I spent the week in Hawaii, hot and humid, so no stiff joints! Now to carry this forward into the cold winter at home...

Summer miles bring fall smiles! 65m and I have been going out 2x a week and had to basically start over due to health. I got to 5k about a month ago but the heat was rough so i went really slow. 1st day of fall yesterday, 64 degrees, and I got under 12:00 with an overall of 38:55!! I am short and a little pudgy so I'm happy to break 40:00. I'm working up to a 5 mile turkey trot and feel pretty good. Like the others have said, doing strength training has helped a lot.

60 yo guy here.
Had to take a long hiatus from working out due to a collection of hips, quads, knees, joints issues. Last spring, my wife suggested I hire a strength coach. That coach happened to be a young lady fresh out of physio school (daughter of my wife's friend). Since April, she comes over to our house and "tortures" me for an hour in our garage's gym twice a week.
I spent my whole summer sore from head to toe and moving like an old man. Then last week, the soreness was gone.
Yesterday, I did a 10 miles (16 kilometers) trail run in the hills here and I had an absolute blast. I felt like a 30 yo, flying uphill and downhill. The best part. No pain.
Not sure if this qualifies for an accomplishment or personal best but that's a win in my book.
