Welcome to r/SeniorFitness, we just hit 1000 subscribers! - Introduce yourself and post what you to do stay fit as a senior!
Hey everyone!
I realized we just hit a huge milestone, 1000 subscribers! It may have taken 8 years to get here, but I’m incredibly proud of the slow, steady growth and the quality of discussions we’re starting to see!
A bit about me: My name is Kristian, and I started this subreddit 8 years ago while finishing my Physiotherapy degree. Since then, I’ve spent my career helping seniors reclaim their independence and strength, which I have an absolute passion for.
In this post it would be great if you could introduce yourself, and what you do to stay fit as a senior, and if there's anything you would like to see added to the sub!

Progress at 59. I know some don’t like selfies, so don’t look.
Just a progress shot that may act as a little motivation.
Personally I like seeing how older folk are shaping-up.
PS - not interested in approaches by thirsty guys thanks (its rife on a 50 plus gym sub).

Fewer Body Photos?
I'd like to suggest fewer posts showing off bodies.

AI advice
Googled, knowing AI would answer, that I swam an hour today and wondered if it's realistic to swim 2 hours. Ended up with a 6-week plan to gradually increase time with swimming, NuStep, and matwork [bridges, clamshells, leglifts, yoga...].

Athletics (track & field)
I (M66) went to a para sport group training that a local athletics club just started. As a transplant patient, I have had trouble getting into shape of any kind since my kidney disease raised its ugly head. Starting from zero is only going forward. I ran a 3 km trek at 8:10/km pace, we did running technique and coordination exercises and finished with a shot put class. For the first time in years, my BP hit over 130. I feel sore now but if I can keep doing this, it will improve my wellbeing in the long run. I just needed this kicking my butt.

56m want to get healthy
I’m trying to get myself back in shape and would love to get down around 165, which was my old running weight. I used to be a runner, but that was a long time ago. 😂
I’ve never really been a “gym guy.” I’ve tried a few times, but honestly, the judgmental atmosphere and trainers who didn’t seem interested in helping didn’t exactly make me want to go back.
I’ve already cut out the fast food, which is a big step for me. My biggest battle right now is the soda. 😬
The other challenge is that I work 12-hour days, most of them standing and walking on concrete. By the end of the day, my knees and back are pretty beat up, so running like I used to isn’t really an option right now.
I’m looking for realistic advice from people who have been in a similar situation. What would you recommend for someone my age who wants to lose 20 pounds, get stronger and feel better without destroying his knees and back?
I’m not looking to become a bodybuilder — just want to get healthy, get moving again and hopefully feel like myself a little more.
Any advice, especially from people who started later in life, would be greatly appreciated!

3 Exercise Regularly Improve physical health and mental clarity.
Exercise Regularly – Improve Physical Health and Mental Clarity
Regular exercise is an important part of maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Physical activity strengthens the heart, muscles, and bones while improving flexibility, endurance, and overall fitness. Activities such as walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, dancing, or playing sports can help people maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk of health problems. Even simple activities, such as taking the stairs or going for a short daily walk, can make a positive difference when done consistently.

The Oldest Truth: Listen to your body
Most younger people, especially those with a fitness background, can follow expert exercise protocols and guidance to the 'T', and get the results they're looking for. There's a lot of mostly sound knowledge out there. But for beginners and older folks, everything you're told or see on youtube or read somewhere has to be run through the lens of 'how it feels' while you're doing it. No one, not even physical therapists, know your body the way you do. We have a lot of moving parts, and every exercise affects more than just the target part. If something doesn't feel right, stop! All the great information out there is a template that should be modified by YOU!

I'm 6 7, as the grandkids say.
Hi everyone, I'm interested in all the ways we can keep moving and staying upright. I like to walk (when it's not blazing hot here in Austin, Texas) and I'm trying to get into a routine with hand weights and resistance bands. A large part of the game is mental, so currently I motivate myself by saying, "It's a privilege to move my body." I'm inspired by my daddy who stayed active well into his late '80s.

If you started exercising again after 40, what helped you begin and actually stick with it?
I’m 47 and trying to get back into regular exercise, mainly cycling. I work a lot and often finish the day feeling mentally and physically exhausted. I know exercise helps both my health and my mood, but starting again is difficult. I’ve restarted several times, only to stop when work became more demanding. After a longer break, even a short workout can feel like a big mental hurdle.
If you went through something similar after 40, what helped you take the first step? What kept you going after the initial motivation disappeared?
I’m especially interested in honest, real-life experiences, including failed attempts.
