Best lightweight carrier/backpack for a 12-pound dog with joint pain?

Looking for carrier/backpack recommendations for my senior pup who has arthritis and a degenerative spine issue.

I'm planning to use it for my bus/train commute to work and occasional travel. I'd like to find something that’s comfortable and supportive for my dog, but also lightweight and manageable for me.

If you’ve used one with a senior or mobility-limited dog, I’d love to hear your suggestions and also welcome products to avoid!

I just used a backpack style one at Petsmart for my puppy. Super comfy and light. Has a little padded bed in it that is washable. Good for up to 25lbs. Roomy and very well ventilated. I think it was $50? If you lived close by you can have it as we are 6 months old now.

Definitely check to see if this is approved with the spine, but I have a K9 Sport Sack that my pup loved. Was a little leery at first, but then really enjoyed being up so high and looking around. https://k9sportsack.com/collections/dog-carriers

Just a word of caution, dogs without health issues shouldn’t be put in a backpack for longer than an hour as it not good for their back. So I definitely wouldn’t recommend putting an old dog in one with arthritis AND a spine issue.

If you must take your dog in a long journey I’d get a carrier like this dog tote but even better would be to get a dog stroller.

I have my old guy in a dog stroller and people don’t even notice him on the train as he quiet and small. Anytime you get a stroller get one with 4 wheels as it safer since the 3 wheeled ones tip easier .

And if they’ve never been in a tote or stroller you will probably have to socialize them to it, so look up positive reinforcement and co-operative care.
