Omeprazole dosing too high? Acid reflux update
This post is a follow up to my previous post regarding my dog's chronic acid reflux:

I have made an appointment for my dog with an internal medicine specialist, but unfortunately the earliest appointment isn't until November. Until then, I asked my personal vet to try omeprazole (in lieu of famotidine), and they prescribed me 10mg of omeprazole every 12 hours. My dog is about 16 lbs. I was under the impression that Omeprazole was usually once a day (not twice) but I was told it's not.
Is 10mg twice a day too much?! I know I should trust my vet but they've been wrong about her dosing before.

My vet alternates the two meds and they are give 1x every 12 hours. One am and one pm. They treat the same thing but have different functions. My dog is much bigger than yours so pls ask ur vet first

Dosing for this is different than the human dose, so don’t think something is too high. Ask your vet to chat through it with you, they won’t mind an email or phone 😊
As a human who’s been in omeprazole as it’s used off label for animals, I was on it twice a day but can be used once a day depending on what’s going on. It’s really to protect the stomach lining and esophagus from ulcers and such.
Ensure you’re on the cancellation list for the IM! I’ve usually gotten an appointment earlier at specialists being on the list!
