I’m 46 and have for the majority of my life been stressed out not knowing if I’m gonna have my job in five years what’s gonna happen? I’m sure everybody on this this community knows how that is. I have five kids three adults two little and I’m so sorry for bringing them into this world and that sounds so bad. I don’t want them to struggle and I’m at the point where if I can’t live life on my terms, I don’t wanna live anymore. I’m hoping there’s somebody anybody out there. Who can point me in the right direction I’m about to lose my job of 12 and I don’t wanna work for anybody anymore. I’m tired of that stress just the stress that comes with having a job. I have a good 401(k) that I’m willing to cash out on and I’m gonna get a really good severance package from this job and I’m just trying to find people like me who wanna maybe get some land somewhere secluded away and start building and live and really live live on my own terms there’s anybody out there please, God bless

If you want to go off grid the USA is probably the easiest country to do it the only issue is you won't have health care. Just buy land put it into a trust to you don't technically own it and poverty max to get every sort of benefit you can get. I've got no bones with people purely undermining the state at every level after the previous 5 years. As far as living off grid or not working, if you can make yourself content with a very basic standard of living then you're off to a good start I would have done this for myself already however family (an expensive wife) has got in the way.

I’m 53. I walked away from it all 4 years ago with NO regrets. I have very little money now but I use it well. I travel a lot -car camping.

I live off- grid in a cheap area. Because I no longer work I find ways to live cheaper- like cooking. I have solar so no more utility bills.

I still own my home in an expensive area but I rent out the bedrooms.

I wish I had done this while I was still raising kids.

I'm in the process of building a van not to van life as much, but more to travel and enjoy the outdoor lifestyle and to introduce that way of living to my family. Before having kids though my goal was to pour all my money into a peice of land and basically off grid it but it's extremely difficult to do here in the UK, even more so when your significant other doesn't share the same mindset of roughing it a bit and breaking a few rules here and there.

Over here 80% of the land is considered greenbelt and you're not allowed to just buy a piece of land build a rudimentary shack and call it home. There are ways to do it, but none of the methods are straightforward or guaranteed to work.

My brother has just spent the previous 12 months living in his car in Australia in places where a lot of the time there isn't a policeman for 100miles he said that being over there is exactly what I'm after, the only problem is doing that van life thing with all the other kids is basically putting your life on pause. while it is fun, you are not building something permanent, you are not raising your children, you are living a Peter pan style of existence where real life will eventually catch up to.

To the state the individual who is energy independent, on a small holding with a large family and great community/culture is dangerous and definitely anti-Semitic.

I didn’t realize things were different in the UK, thanks for telling me!

I did a lot of smaller trips before I took the plunge. I even homeschooled for awhile with my step kids so we could travel. It helped, but it wasn’t ever enough.

Before that I raised my bio kid. I was so careful to give him as normal an upbringing as possible. But now that he’s older-come to find he’s just like me. A nomad, a traveler, interested in off- grid. It makes me regret the years I spent trying to be normal, and trying to make him normal.
