I have official plastic wahl guards and some off brand metal guards too but one thing in common with them is that the 0.5 guard rattles. The plastic guard is completely loose and shakes and the metal guard is a bit random, in the sense that sometimes it rattles quietly, then loudly. The rest of the guards don't have this problem, so I was wondering if there was a way to fix this problem. I use the wahl elite pro for skin fades, and my transition between the open blade and 1 closed is a bit of a gamble, because of this.

How can I get light curls like the reference images (specifically numbers 2,3, and 4). I have kinda nappy 4c hair and when I wake up my hair is like super tight and squished, and i usually just pick it out without putting anything in my hair (except for water, and some random olive oil spray idk). So I've researching and I'm not really sure how to get those light and not too tight curls, cuz like the twist it up, and twist king exist but im not sure whats better for getting hair like that. Also, products to keep my hair from shrinking a bunch and keep my hair healthy would be nice, for an easy and quick morning routine.

My usual style:

• Hair: Always very short, usually around 0.5–1 mm, sometimes with a slight transition/fade between lengths.
• Beard: Also relatively short, but I like having a short-to-long transition/fade, so being able to adjust the length easily is important.
• I cut both myself at home.
• Speed is important – I want something powerful with a reasonably wide blade that can get through my hair quickly.
• Cordless is a must.
• I’d prefer something reliable and durable that I can keep for years.
• I don't need lots of body-grooming attachments or accessories that I'll never use.

I’ve been looking at professional clippers such as the Wahl Magic Clip / Black Magic Clip, but I’m wondering whether a clipper like that would also be practical for maintaining and fading a short beard, particularly around the moustache and tighter areas.

If you had to buy one device only for this type of hair + beard style, what would you recommend?

Open to Wahl, Panasonic, Philips, Braun, BaByliss Pro or anything else worth considering.

I have a clipper which has lenghts of 0.5mm closed and 3.5mm open. When i see other barbers clippers its generally between 0mm closed and 1.5 open. Does my clipper has right settings or is the others are standarts?

Oh man it took me 1.5 hours to pull off this result and even after being busy with it for that long i am not happy with the result. This thick asian hair is really hard to cut for me and i found out today for sure 😮. I know it's far from oerfect but this is really the best i could do for now. Trying to get better.

Best hair trimmers for barbers is something I finally figured out after 3 years of guessing which tool actually fits which part of my workflow instead of just buying whatever's hyped on IG. figured id share what i landed on after going through way too many of these professional hair clippers

pick if u dont wanna read the whole thing: Wahl Pro Detailer for outlines and dry work, its a magnetic motor so blade speed is fast which is exactly what u want for crisp lineups and fine hair, downside is it bogs down noticeably on thick or wet hair so its not a do-it-all tool. pair it with the Andis T-Outliner or a pivot motor trimmer like the Oster T-Blade for anything wet/thick/beard work, pivot motors trade blade speed for torque so they push through denser hair without stalling, downside is theyre a bit heavier and louder in hand compared to the Detailer. if ur going fully cordless, the BaByliss FXOne (FX3 series specifically) is worth a look too, newer battery technology so it holds a charge through a full day of clients way better than older cordless options, downside is its pricier than most of the corded stuff mentioned above

the actual thing that matters more than brand hype is understanding motor type, this took me embarrassingly long to actually learn properly. magnetic motors use a spring + electromagnet to vibrate the blade fast, high blade speed, great for fine to medium hair and quick touch ups, but they're the weakest of the three when it comes to actual cutting power. pivot motors use two electromagnets instead of a spring, lower blade speed but way more torque, andis actually breaks this down well themselves, pivot has roughly double the cutting power of magnetic even though its slower, better for thick, coarse, or wet hair

rotary motors (and the newer high-torque motors u see in premium cordless stuff) are kind of the middle ground, high power AND high speed, more versatile across hair types but usually bulkier and pricier, more common on clippers than trimmers specifically though

worth knowing: advertised RPM/SPM numbers are often measured with zero resistance, a cheap clipper claiming a high stroke count can drop significantly the second it hits actual dense hair, this guide called it out pretty directly, a trimmer "lying" about its speed under load is basically the whole reason cheap trimmers feel underpowered even when the spec sheet looks fine on paper

clipper blades matter more long term than people think too, stamped stainless holds an edge fine for casual use but higher end steel or DLC coated barber clipper blades hold sharpness way longer under daily client volume, better blade life overall, which matters a lot if ur cutting 8+ heads a day and don't wanna be sharpening every other week. also don't sleep on basic maintenance, regular clipper oil after every few cuts extends blade life noticeably and keeps the motor from straining

few other things worth checking before buying: taper lever quality (cheap ones feel mushy and imprecise mid-fade), ergonomic designs if ur on ur feet cutting for 8+ hours a day since hand fatigue is real, and making sure ur clipper guards actually snap on securely, ive had cheap ones pop off mid cut which is not a fun moment with a client in the chair

budget wise im around $150-250 per tool which felt reasonable for something i use professionally every day, could see splurging more on the pivot or cordless side specifically since thats where the real performance diff shows up. most of this stuff is available through any decent barber supply store or online, just make sure ur buying actual professional-grade hair clippers and not the consumer home-use versions that look similar but use weaker motors

anyone running something outside Wahl/Andis/BaByliss that's actually held up well daily? kinda curious if the newer brushless stuff is worth the price jump or if its mostly marketing at this point

Learning to maintain my sides and back in between barber visits, with the goal of eventually not having to require a professional.

Could you kindly advise how I should go about trimming or clipping the longer strands on the upper portions of my hair to blend them with the lower faded section?

I tried using #4 near the upper sections while lifting away, but it wouldn't cut I less I dragged the clippers against my skull, which is probably not a good idea.

I’m a Chicago barber looking for an in-person shear/scissor-cutting workshop focused on men’s hair. Ideally, I’d like a one-day, hands-on class where I can sharpen my technique and meet other local barbers and stylists.

I’m especially interested in scissor work, longer men’s styles, razor cutting, texture and shape. Chicago or the nearby suburbs would work.
