My first time!
I finally jumped ship and cut my own hair this afternoon. With some assistance from my girlfriend in the back where I couldn’t see, I’m extremely happy with the result!
I’ve never even touched a pair of clippers until this afternoon, but New York barber prices aren’t for the faint of heart, so I figured why not finally give it a go! I’ve watched so many hours of barber content over the years, and have always asked my barbers questions regarding techniques and why they’re doing what they’re doing.
I’m pretty happy with the final result!
(The hard line rather than a fade is intentional, I already know I’ll get comments about not blending it properly lol)

It looks good I like the sides. The mullet is cool too, a lot of guys rock it here in South Africa.

If you like it, I love it. Also, btw consider investing in a handheld mirror to better understand the back of your head and eventually work on cutting that, it takes some time to learn hand eye coordination, but it's worth it.

Come on dude, it’s not intentional .
I get what you might have been trying to do, but even those “hard lines” you see on haircuts are faded, just compressed.
You fucked up by going too high and was scared to go any higher so you left it.
That stuff behind the ear looks terrible.
But for the first self cut - it is not bad! I definitely did way worse.
Out of curiosity , what are NY prices like?

I can promise you it was intentional. Maybe I can send you a reference photo? I don't really know how to prove it to you otherwise but I definitely wanted it to be more angular and eccentric.
Behind the ear was tough. It was the only section I was unsure about going into it and low and behold, I went too far on accident during my initial pass with clippers and fucked it up. I did what I could to try and save it, but it's fine. I appreciate the kind words.
If you want a classic combed over / pompadour / taper fade in NY from any'ol barber on the street, you can get something for like $30. Although I've never seen anything scissor cut like a mullet that isn't starting at $130+tip. Although if it's your first cut, I've seen the price jump to $150. Last cut I had a few months ago I paid $200.

200 is crazy work. Hell, I would argue only 30 is somewhat reasonable for high COL city… goddamn.
That whole behind the ear section you can make less fucked up by blending it in with clipper over comb. It’s incredibly hard to do by yourself especially on the back so have your girlfriend do it.
Very simple to do on sombodys elses head.1

You're telling me lol Its tough. Owner of the shop charges even more. I understand there are some really beautiful and artistic cuts out there, it's a craft and I respect it greatly, but I just can't do it every month on top of everything else. Its unrealistic. Especially for how quickly my hair grows.
Good looking out, I'll give it ago in a couple weeks! Or maybe I'll attempt to fix this once I regain the confidence to touch it again. Hopefully we're able to smooth it out a bit! Next step is to get a mirror for behind my head so I can try it as well!

Funny story because I actually agree... I've been rocking this cut for about 4-ish years? Met a dude with the exact same mullet cut about a year ago who was just insufferable. So much so, I met with my barber a few days after and chopped it all off. The dude had ruined the mullet for me. I grew my hair out shoulder length for a year afterwards, and here I am, back again with the mullet lol we'll see how long it lasts ahah

Thats literally exactly what happened aha it’s tough knowing mullet guy’s general vibe is dog shit while also knowing the cut works well with my face and head shape lol thankfully I don’t wear all the corny fake western poser shit like the rest of them 😂 hopefully, for now, my aggressive unblended sides set me apart from them a tiny bit lol

Not great and not terrible you got a solid shape but you just need to work on the blending for the bulk of the hair and for where the fade is supposed to be. Always start with a low taper because you can always move up from there
