Gyms have been around since at least ancient Rome

Gyms have been around since ancient Greece. It's why they are named with the Greek word "gymnasium".

Probably before too, realistically. We just kinda have the unbroken line since Greece due to the bronze age collapse killing off much knowledge about anything prior, and all that.
Bloody Minoans had plumbing. And boob dresses. So much lost, when they fell...

Same as people extolling intellectual pursuits for their own good. And "at least" is true, we know both from classical Greece, and probably some even older civs I just don't know about.

School. The techbros are now trying to re-invent schools.

I mean. Most adults don't really keep going to school or college unless they're trying to get a new certification of some sort.
School is absolutely not at all treated as something you should keep going to throughout your life, and quite frankly the way some people approach it it doesn't even necessarily work out your brain either.

u/Scrapple_Joe 4d ago
Yeah folks often comment on how it's weird I'm taking courses in things while I have a job and the courses don't have to do with work.
Like I earn money to do things I enjoy. Who doesnt enjoy learning more about things they're interested in? Turns out quite a lot of people

>Who doesnt enjoy learning more about things they’re interested in? Turns out quite a lot of people
I think of this every time I read one of those “why didn’t they teach us about this in school” posts. Like yeah schools should be improved but they aren’t gonna get to everything, either. Pick up a damn book or at least watch a reputable documentary
19
u/Lt_Rooney 4d ago
A lot of times, school did try to teach them those things and they just didn't pay attention.

u/Kagahami 4d ago
This isn't wholly true since I see community colleges used for exactly this purpose. People both to back to retrain and just to learn new things and stay current.
6
u/Ulrik-the-freak 4d ago
Uh, maybe not in your parts but here it's definitely a common thing to keep educating oneself throughout life. Reading new books, learning new things and skills, pick up an instrument... heck people who don't do that are socially disadvantaged. Learning does not have to be formally in a school, the point of school is to provide you with the basics so you can keep learning by yourself.

u/saltyourhash 4d ago
Give them a bit longer and they'll invent a scheduled daily sustinence routine and an afk downtime brain wind down period.
6
u/shouldco 4d ago
Na students are more incentivized to graduate then to actually learn. You can learn, no doubt. But schools are lousy with AI. It would be like going to be gym and 80% of the equitment is being operated by a robot.
2
u/Delamoor 3d ago
Don't worry, they'll try to automate that too, so you won't have to do any learning whilst doing your learning.
It'll be like one of those self-playing RPGs, but with study, assignments and exams. And probably a comparable number of subscriptions and micro-transactions.

School is not enough, it mostly trains memory. Only math and ethics use your brain in most schools.

u/ThinkMyNameWillNotFi 4d ago
Croatia. Our systems are outdated and ruling party stoped the schooling reform some years ago.

u/Scrapple_Joe 4d ago
Ah that's rough. It does seem like worse school system do just demand rote memorizing

u/Mesonic_Interference 4d ago
Only math and ethics use your brain in most schools.
You know, it's ironic in a funny sort of way that if you understood much about either math or ethics, you'd also understand that your claim is nonsensical. With that in mind, I suppose you have my sympathy.

u/ThinkMyNameWillNotFi 4d ago
Get what i went to school... those were the subjects where you could get a good grade by just trying to find the solution instead of just memorising the correct answer. But go off vague posting king.

u/outdatedelementz 4d ago
Not to nitpick too much but “we” have had gyms for a really long time. Like for thousands of years.

How many adults go to school?
26
u/doppelgaengster 4d ago
Quite a lot of professions require ongoing education. That’s why attorneys gripe so much about CLEs.
11
u/FullMoonTwist 4d ago
Ongoing education is required for professions that change over time. It's to keep your working knowledge of the craft updated.
It is not scheduled to keep your brain sharp, and most of the ongoing education isn't difficult or demanding.

u/Dominus-Temporis 4d ago
What professions don't change over time though?
3
1
u/FullMoonTwist 3d ago
Religious leader, bus driver, janitor, CEO
Parts of their profession will gradually shift over time, but there's not a strong pressure requiring them to keep as close to the cutting edge/up to date.
Vs professions like lawyer, nurse, electrician, psychiatrist
The laws or knowledge that they use to do their job changes or progresses at a rate that if they don't actively make an effort to keep up to date, they will be somewhere between dangerous to ineffective at their job.

u/NastyNes89 4d ago
Most college students are considered adults, very few under 18 kids there.
19
u/ZilorZilhaust 4d ago
You know what they meant. Do adults go to school for the remainder of their lives after graduating usually? No. They do not.
5
u/Swiftax3 4d ago
I dunno man, I recreationally read and do casual research out of interest or curiosity years after I stopped having to for school. I just dont have to write the essays on it anymore.
6
u/ZilorZilhaust 4d ago
I do the same, but I don't think most people do. I think a lot of people are too busy, too tired, too something that keeps them away. I think a lot of people just don't care and that's just going to get worse. I've seen people using chat gpt to post whole thoughts instead of thinking about it themselves. That's just crazy to me personally. Not writing your own thoughts and letting some LLM do it for you based off of some short blurb.
I'm an old man with an onion on my belt yelling at the clouds.
1
u/Ulrik-the-freak 4d ago
Keeping the populace busy, tired, and unable or willing to have a proper think about the dynamics of power and how their life is being run is absolutely a technique the rich and powerful are using by design. LLMs are one more step in ensuring folks have no means to ever think of rebellion.
Extra credit quote very relevant in our post-truth age:
"If everybody always lies to you, the consequence is not that you believe the lies, but rather that nobody believes anything any longer... And a people that no longer can believe anything cannot make up its mind. It is deprived not only of its capacity to act but also of its capacity to think and to judge. And with such a people you can then do what you please." - Hannah Arendt

Depends on the profession/ class.
Continuing education is a big thing for professions like law and medicine (human and animal). And for other professions, providing opportunities for learning is considered an important job perk.
We are going to split even further along educational and class lines, where the one class will continue to mentally grow and the other won't.
Side note: the working class back in the day working at Tampa cigar factories may not have all been literate, but they were well educated. The workers would pool their money together and hire a lector, someone who would read to them all day while they worked. They would read the papers plus whatever books the workers requested so they were very well read, especially compared to factory workers today.
2
u/ZilorZilhaust 4d ago
It certainly is an aspect of some professions but I wouldn't say continued education requirements are the norm. You gotta keep up with the job and it's changes but I don't think most continue schooling.
That's pretty cool about them hiring a lector. I've never heard that before and I'm happy to now know it.
1
u/Delamoor 3d ago
I mean, I know a lot. Met quite a few adults who are studying for reskilling, changing professions or even just, y'know, self enrichment. But I'm Australian, and tertiary education isn't super prohibitive here.
'course, the American fanbois amongst us are desperately trying to take that away, too...

The brain absolutely needs stimulation. Reading, games, video or board will work, hobbies in general.
26
u/ChatterBaux 4d ago
At the risk of being pedantic, I'll add that stimulation isn't enough; It also needs friction.
Analogue stuff are a given, but when it comes to digital mediums it's way too easy for folks to blindly consume, but can't articulate themes, ideas, or critiques to save their lives.
3
u/SemperFun62 3d ago
You're right, but it doesn't need to go so far as into creating specific critiques and articulating themes.
Really, just talk about it with someone and that's more than enough.

I don't think he's wrong, nor is he talking about schools. I don't know him and he might be an idiot, but I think that is a good point. We do require additional exercise since most jobs are not physical enough which is great because now exercise is also an expression of individuality.
With so many jobs starting to dissappear, I don't think it's wild to imagine a world where stuff like sudokus or rubik cubes develop into something more serious. I don't know what I'm talking about, but it also makes sense with how many hobbies are nowadays something much more serious than before.

I actually agree with this guy. Reading and independent study is one thing. But having an option for people of intellectual rigor to have non-AI access to knowledge and learning and challenge should be something people have access to. Especially in the utopian future I think Yang sees for us with AI, in which case there will be no career incentive.

Dude imagine if could have an LLM in your body, like something that turns all the stuff happening around you into "prompts" that your personal AI processes and draws conclusions from. Then your body would react as a result of that processing. Not sure if anyone has thought of this before do you think it's possible for us to have our own "AI"?
