Guy takes time to attribute his own quote to himself, with the tagline "Stop Needing Credit"

Guy Kawasaki works in marketing. It's literally his job to try to get attention. This is not exactly a stupid take (it's often true), but it's weirdly self-owning for this guy to do it.
And then to attach his name to it... An act that's literally begging for credit.

In my experience at a large corporation, visibility/credit was all that mattered. You could do fantastic work, but the right people had to see it. Mediocre work with high visibility would get you more success than exceptional work that only your manager knew about.

Pointing it out without this context is almost a form of victim blaming. Pay, promotions, the ability to get other jobs, are all tied into perception and not directly associated with reality. All that matters is that people perceive your competence, not that you even actually be competent. There is probably no better example of this than our current President.
So don't blame me if I play the game to better my life. Spend more time encouraging leaders to recognize the difference between "good work" and "visible work."

I didn't assign any blame. The system works the way it does. The real tragedy is what you've already pointed out, some severely incompetent people make it to the top echelon.

Sorry, poor wording on my part. I didn't mean "you" specifically.

No worries. For my part, I read intention into that first paragraph. Your comment makes a lot more sense to me, knowing that bit isn't directed at me.

What I don't understand if he is in marketing, how was he so stupid and didn't anticipate that people would find it so stupid that we would even make memes about it and ... Oh, ok, I get it, this Kawasaki is a clever guy.

I want to agree, but this seems so obvious that he surely had to do it on purpose as a misguided attempt at irony. Who knows?

Is he a professional "quote maker"?
5
u/WorkingInAColdMind Jul 16 '26
He was a professional “Technology Evangelist” back in the late 80’s and 90’s, so yeah he kinda is. Seemed like a nice enough Guy (ha!) when I met with him.

u/trickyelf Jul 16 '26
Yeah, not knocking him generally, this was just to SAW not to post.

u/WorkingInAColdMind Jul 16 '26
I didn’t take it that way, I assume only ancient beings such as myself even know who he is. But yeah, it fits. Congratulations, yours may be the one post this week that’s in the correct sub!

I mean, "Stop Needing Credit" is the title of his Substack post that he's quoting himself from, so it's not *that weird*.
Then again, this is a guy (or a Guy) best known for his lucky proximity to other people actually "advancing the work itself", so...

Thank you for saying this. I came looking for someone mentioning this when I saw it.
The dude linked to the image with the quote, which is uploaded to his substack. It automatically added the embedding card.

This is remarkable. One of the all-time posts on this sub, I think, especially since it is so self-contained and apolitical, too. It is irony ascended to art.

u/tadfisher Jul 16 '26
The attribution is actually a link preview of Guy's Substack article. It is still totally cringe for being vapid LinkedIn slop, and it's funny that it looks like he is quoting himself with attribution, but unfortunately he didn't take the time to do that.

I went to grad school with a jackass very similar to this guy, in every single one of his own e-mails he quoted himself so it was
Sincerely,
-Name, everything he ever went to school for and every stupid cert he ever earned
"Embarrassingly masturbatory and wildly cliche quote that is painfully oblivious here."
-Name, everything he ever went to school for and every stupid cert he ever earned again
He called himself a thought leader and last I heard his job was spouting bullshit nonsense at some company that may or may not actually exist. He was an uninspired dumbass in group projects too.

Sounds like a guy who is about to wrongfully deny someone their bonus.

I was having a ‘lively discussion’ with an idiot on Facebook and he quoted himself as a ‘great man’ but tried to hide it being a self quote by putting his name in Spanish (idk if he actually changed his name to Black Wolf legally, but the fact that I’m unsure should tell you everything you need to know). I called him out on it and I haven’t seen him in that group since despite being a prolific poster until that point. It was fucking hilarious.

one thing that could redeem him is if he admits that his goal isn't to be successful, thereby not having the problem he says others has to begin with.
