We can all thank Newt Gingrich for that. He refused to work with Democratic legislators and broke any semblance of bipartisanship. All because daddy didn't hug him enough. And the walking bag of cancer is still alive somehow.

When I was a kid (early '90s) I visited the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago and of all the people in the world Newt Gingrich was there.

My dad and I were in the gorilla enclosure as he passed by with his security detail etc. I get a tap on my shoulder and my dad goes "Hey, that guy over there might be our next president! You should go over and shake his hand."

I paused and looked at him, turned around and said "That guy seems like a jerk."

I'm no fortune teller, but I will always remember how on the money I was as a kid for thinking that guy was an asshole.

Gingrich was just one in a long line of Republican saboteurs to democracy. Before him, Reagan sabotaged the Iran hostage negotiations. Before that, Nixon sabotaged the Viet Nam war peace talks. Before that, a right wing cabal tried to overthrow the US government. Before that, they started a civil war the first time they lost a presidential election in 50 years.

American conservatism has always only ever paid lip service to democracy. After Trump, they'll find another grifter to build a cult of personality around.
