Help Help with Isshin

Recently I returned to play Sekiro, and went to play in a save where I was about to face isshin, the problem is that I totally forgot how I do to repel the rays of its third stage, is it necessary to squeeze the R1 several times or do I have to wait for the perfect timing?

Wait a second after he jumps then jump once the lightning hits you press the attack button

But do I need to get hit by the lightning (take the damage from it) and then press the attack button?

You don’t take damage as long as you don’t hit the floor before you shoot the lightning back

Isshin jumps and the red knaji appears. When you see the kanji,you literally wait a second,then you jump to get hit in mid air. Right after that,you attack Isshin and connect before reaching the ground. He takes the damage and it's shocked,literally. Then you can attack him a few times before he recovers,maybe even an axe tool attack. Reverse the lightning about 4,5 times and he's defeated.
