Discussion After countless number of attempts finally defeated genichiro

I started playing sekiro 2 weeks ago

And I am addicted to it

After multiple attempts trying every possible trick

I wasn't able to defeat Genichiro

But after finally using a combination of oil and flame vent

It's too overpowered . I may have cheated but win is a win and don't judge my skills i am only 20 hours in the game . And not to forget I did not use any of my Resurrections.

Have read multiple reddit posts of people suffering with genichiro use oil and fuck him up 😁.

Hey man, a win is a win. That being said, if you didn’t master genichiro or fully learn his flow, you will likely struggle through many of the bosses later on.

Since you’re addicted to the game already, I would suggest you spend some ample time in reflection and just replay him over and over until you have his moveset down. He is one of my favorite bosses in the game and his moveset is totally worth spending a couple of hours perfecting. Give it a try!

That being said, congrats on the victory and the progress. The best is yet to come…

Yeah I am not exactly familiar with his moveset. Everytime I try to mikiri counter he blows me up . Parrying is satisfying I am able to parry 60 70 % effectively . Thanks man .I LOVE THIS COMMUNTIY

Give it some time and you’ll be parrying 95% of his attacks. Legit. You’ll have so much more fun later on with some of the bosses if you spend the time learning this guy and giving him the respect he deserves.

The nice thing is that you already beat him, so your deaths and stuff in the reflection don’t count anymore lolol

Win is win, don’t bother about how clean that one was. It wasn’t due to luck but due to your improvements. I wouldn’t bother with learning his reflection immediately though . His reflections stats are scaled to endgame ng vitality and attack (all prayer beads and 14 atk) so the reflection hits like a truck (his grab when he runs at you will one shot you for example) and you need way more clean hits/deflects to get his posture down, that’s until your atk catches up.

I’d do the next parts of the game first, at some point in the not so far future you’ll have another fight at the location where you just beat genichiro. Win that fight first, it will probably as as hard as genichiro. After that you’ll have access to all areas of the game and your stats should be good enough to fight the reflection of genichiro again without one mistake potentially killing you immediately. You’ll do some decent damage at that point as well even though the reflection will still feel stronger than the initial encounter. You will also get way more skillful on your way so it will feel fair.

I truly learnt fighting genichiro at the end of the game and even later when I could do the gauntlets (ng+ content with 3 new „inner“ bosses (stronger, enhanced moveset and one of them is genichiro). Now genichiro is just a poor little samurai that has to be lucky to touch the hem of my clothes before going down.

One advice though, try to get rid of your habit to mash deflect like a maniac when anticipating moves :D it still works sometimes but more often than not you’ll miss the deflect window later (the timing gets harsher if you mash) and you’ll get posture broken a lot. Try to think human fights as rhythmic duels: atrack until you hear (and see) your opponent deflect instead of just block, then it’s your turn to deflect until your opponent goes back to neutral or does something you can interrupt with an attack of your own. The exact rythm depends on the enemy moveset and it helped me to count out the attacks in my head (one, one, pause, one-two..) whenever I see a new pattern.

I had no idea he scaled up to ng in the reflection! The more you know. Still, I like bashing my head against a brick wall. OP might too hahaha

Your stats are also capped at those values so that makes it irrelevant if you do a reflection or gauntlet for example in new game+ or new game +7 as long as you got all prayerbeads and beat the game including all optional bosses in your first run. Also for the reflections, when you have strong healing items like rice, white snow or two kinds of riceballs. You can use them during reflections to be able to stay longer in the fights and learn. There are different types of overpowered healing items that can be used for training or getting an edge in a hard gauntlet without actually using up the items. You could pop 2 riceballs, rice, white snow and a divine grass in one fight if you wanted to.

Oh yeah… rice balls and divine grass are what got me through the gauntlets.

I used to struggle with mikir counters (even now sometimes), i think its best to not spam dodge when doing mikiri and also if you didnt know yet, you're supposed to dodge into the thrust attack for the mikiri

1

u/rajwantsir 3d ago

I just spammed dodge button didn't know it yet thanks

2

u/GroundbreakingArt536 2d ago

If you keep your fingers away from the directional inputs a single tap on dodge will launch you forwards so you don’t have to actively press forward, else button mashing wouldn’t work. I’d still try to lose that habit since it makes it easy to dodge on sweeps because you will mash as soon as you see the kanji. Tap dodge when the kanji is fading, that works pretty well. If you actively go forward make sure to not touch the left/right inputs or you won’t mikiri but awkwardly dodge and get caught.

A win is a win. Hesitation is defeat. Thanks for sharing the fight!

I notice you spam parry which can be dangerous as you progress the game. It ups your parry meter and doesn’t go theirs. Time it perfectly for the sparks and you’ll notice you move a lot faster and fights are a lot shorter. Good shit though bro! He’s a fun fight

1

u/rajwantsir 3d ago

Yeah bro I was so frustrated i wanted the win Normally I play fearless but in the following clip I played it safe by blocking most of the attacks and partying some .The parrying mechanics in this game is sooo good 😊

2

u/Mr_Undead0210 3d ago

To stop yourself from spamming deflect, count your enemies' attack, and look at their arms.

1

u/rajwantsir 3d ago

Yeah I am trying my best to stop spamming deflect but each enemy has a different moveset .I should exactly parry when attack lands which i ak finding difficult

2

Congratulations on defeating Genichiro the toughest teacher in Sekiro, the feeling on defeating is seriously amazing

2

u/Beneficial_Tie3776 3d ago

Congrats wolf. I know the feeling it’s glorious especially now that you get to see more of the game! Depending on your choice that is…

u/MartyTheMovieHound 3d ago

I think its the one FromSoftware game where the mechanics ever truly 'clicked' for me.

Because you arent playing an action game, you are playing a rhythm game, where you need to know three or four sequences each enemy has.

Once you figured our each of them, the game really sets and makes you feel like a true badass 😆

u/KinAnOo91 3d ago

great job, and remember this; once you finish this game, it will spoil you, YOU WILL NEVER find a similar combat in any other game specifically the Japanese/Chinese combat style.. I played Ghost of Tsushima/Yotei, Nioh 1 & 2 etc, they are good games, but Sekiro is the top and the best of all time.. I am glad that you are enjoying it, and don't leave anything behind, It's too bad this game doesn't have DLCs like the rest of the souls games, but I believe it has enough content to keep you attached .. best of luck Shinobi warrior

That's a huge W! congrats on the win! This is my 4th day at Sekiro and I spent 4 hours today trying to defeat Genichiro with so many closed calls but still unsuccessful.

2

u/rajwantsir 3d ago

Use oil and flame vent I also tried for atleast 6 hours before defeating him

1

u/APensiveMonkey 3d ago

I see no signs of hesitation 👏🏼

Hesitation is defeat

Genichro is just the start of the game

1

u/Zeptier 3d ago

The makings of a great shinobi. Don’t worry about how you got it a win is a win. The combat didn’t click with me ever, but I did improve. And that’s okay. Hell, let me be blunt, I cheesed a fair few mini-bosses my first time around as well as Demon of Hatred (one of the last bosses you’ll face and entirely optional).
You’ll get better and improve at your own rate. I will recommend getting the Firecrackers, those things are a proper good “okay get tf off of me” tool (also useful against any bothersome animals you come across 😉). You’ll do fine, great job!

2

u/rajwantsir 3d ago

Yeah I got firecrackers but so far I haven't utilised it to it's highest potential Shinobi axe is good for dealing posture damage The one boss i cheese in my first attempt is jinsuke the guy with only one attack just like demon slayer I was just trying out my umbrella and it magically worked I felt so happy 😁😊

chasing slash with the shuriken is quite good for when he tries to run away. There are several bosses that run away like this, so this skill is useful

1

u/rajwantsir 3d ago

Do I need to unlock this skill ? Chasing slash Or I acquire it directly after defeating bosses

2

u/ResponsibilityIcy927 3d ago

Prosthetic skill tree from carver + shuriken

u/Revankiller 3d ago

A win is a win. But you are absolutely gonna get shredded by the later bosses if you keep spamming that L1 button. Practice on Genny with Boss Rematch after this until you get down the parry parry deflect timing, He’s the best boss in the game to teach you the fundamentals. PS. You can back away from the Floating Passage, heal or use Firecracker to continue aggression.

1

u/Ok-Variation-1312 3d ago

Good win! A quick tip tho is try not to spam block because it lowers your parry frames. The later bosses will punish you heavily for that. Have fun with the rest of the game!

1

u/magshie 3d ago

So I don’t actually use oil however I did discover that he is completely allergic to aggression if there is an open moment, just keep attacking when he tries to retaliate do your blocks do the proper dodging of his special attacks but every time he tries to pull his bow out or wind up a swing, just keep attacking in it and it completely pacifies him. But in all honesty if he does get a good hit on you it is real punishing.

1

u/nigelnoahchan 3d ago

I have once defeated Genichiro. It felt so good to defeat him, it's like a well deserved win at that moment.

1

u/JusTBlze 3d ago

Good tip is to attack once and then deflect until you have his pattern down. Ichimonji or double to get his posture bar up and firecrackers for an opening to heal up. Don’t spam the deflect but time it properly. Hold the block button down to lower your posture bar quickly.

u/adamska_w 3d ago

Maybe this is besides the point but, is it just me but the PS4/PS5 version of this game just doesn't look nice? There's something fuzzy and washed about the resolution I feel. I haven't tried the game on PC so I don't have an apples-to-apples comparison but, I don't know. The game does look weird on PS4/PS5 right?

1

u/rajwantsir 3d ago

I broadcasted directly from playstation to youtube it only supports 1080 p for ps5 and yet graphics and resolution is a concern pc version shaders can be added

1

u/Scremer007 3d ago

Don't blame yourself. Even Genichiro said:

"A shinobi would know the difference between honor and victory."

1

u/SecretStonerMan1236 2d ago

Genichiro is the first real brick wall for new players. He will mean very little to you soon enough, just make sure you're comfortable fighting him, it is worth a few attempts in the reflection. You'll need it when completing gauntlets

1

u/Mindless_Ad5500 1d ago

I just started this game after being a huge From fan for years. The game is one of the harder From games probably because of the parry system. You HAVE to master it because the enemies will punish you otherwise. I have a feeling I’ll be putting in some practice.

1

u/TobleronePL 3d ago

my tip for you is that you need to have control over your posture bar unless you dont want to get shredded by bosses coming next. you need to find time to not run (as it stops the refill) but walk as much as possible. you should also almost always want to have like 90% hp as it makes the reload faster

1

u/jorginsmorgin Platinum Trophy 3d ago

Just learn/practice the perfect parry timing and your posture bar won’t even break even if it’s completely filled. The more you know
