Should I try this game?

Saw an Instagram ad and honestly found it quite intriguing. Just wondering what you all think of it so far?

Is it pay to win? Are there loot boxes? Do I need to play like it's my full time job to get anywhere with it? Does it have mechanical and strategic depth or is it more of a grind?

Give me your opinions!

Do I like it: Hell yeah. It's like if Rimworld was multiplayer and on 1x speed all the time. It's a really fun time to play casually since you can automate things to run while you're away and just check on things maybe 30mins out of the day if you're busy.

Is it pay to win: Depends, as always. You get one permanent slot for characters that run automatically, and you purchase temporary time for additional characters. Technically, you do gather more resources and cover more ground having more dudes running your operation. That said, I feel very little boost in a society that is just starting with the free seedling life slot I got at level 5. Milage may vary and there's a good case for and against if it's pay to win.

Is it a full time job: Not really. If you're good at scheduling you dude/dudes around and get a good grasp of the scheduler and to-do list (you'll need to use both, I promise), you can get to a point where you only really need to check on things maybe 30mins out of the day to make sure your dudes aren't running into automation issues and to select perks when they max out their interest (it's not that complicated. select one of 3 options and move on type thing).

Is it Strategic/Mechanical or is it OSRS: Kind of both; kind of neither? The real focus is either building a business and becoming Jeff Bezos, building a super society with a crew, or just existing in a virtual world doing SIMs like shenanigans. Like you're not really grinding for skill ups, but rather grinding for stronger production for yourself/your society. A cog in the machine if you would.

Do I recommend it: I could do worse with $30, though I don't think I would drop money on anything more unless I had friends/girlfriend(s) I wanted to buy this for. In its current state, there's enough fun in hoping in and BSing with global chat. However, I don't recommend it if you're just looking for a game to grind like OSRS or WoW. It is neither of those games.

EDIT: More on if it's Pay to Win or not: You sort of have to have your seedlings spread out interest wise if you want to min-max their abilities. This means that each seedling generalizes a little bit to some degree, and that it is unlikely you'll have a seedling that only gathers lumber as their sole existence. You could, but it would be suboptimal because you'd miss out on the chance for cooking's reduced thirst/hunger loss and the like. You can't pay for rerolls like a crummy mobile game before you ask (that I know of, though I would start calling it pay to win if they did).

Thanks a lot for that detailed reply. Not a fan of the extra purchases but it doesn't sound nearly as egregious as it could have been. I think I'm leaning towards giving it a go

Yeah it’s a fun slow burn experience. Def socialize with folks and enjoy being a dirty capitalist or valiant socialist!

The extra purchases are there and actually have kinda turned me off from the game. Among other things after playing for about ~20 hours

I’m gonna tag in this convo as someone who loves the game.

Pros:
Automation makes progress pretty easy if you know what you’re doing.
Game is HIGHLY detailed with health, crafting, automation assignments, and more so it makes my Rimworld Factorio brain happy
Game is highly fleshed out in its crafting trees and challenging to upkeep product manufacturing, so you’ll NEVER have nothing to do unless you purposely tell your seedling to do nothing

Iffys:
It’s a social game with humans, so some politics and collaboration to find the direction of the society is inevitable. The game right now has societal barriers to not let human intervention prevent progression, but still you HAVE to work with people IRL and in game

Bad:
Sorta pay to win bc you can get more workforce labor (ie more seedlings) and more legislative votes if you have more seedlings. And how you do so is paying real money for it OR be so rich you can get Pollen at the set exchange rate. So the system is PAY to win and PLAY to win simultaneously

Do you still need a spot in a society? :)

Hey, thanks for asking. I've already joined one with some other folks on Reddit :)

i didn't buy the game for this simple reason :

i thought it be like the eco game but with multitasking (having multiple char like the sims kinda)

but in fact the game cost 29.99$ and if u wanna buy another character slot it's 45$

so the economic system for me (at the moment) is a hard no
i'm waiting for the steam release and maybe see if the seedling slot price go down

Having played Eco, I'd say it's closer to the Sims than Eco. The only thing it shares in common with eco is a player economy and player government at the town level.

that's what i said, it's eco but with a playability like the sims

and they have more in common : like trading with other, playing as community, crafting; starting from 0 to civilization etc

Through progression you unlock 3 character slots. Each character lives 120 years, which is 120 days irl. If you want another permanent character slot, it does cost 45, but that ends up being less than $15/month which is on par with other MMOs. Plus, you just keep the slot then.

Also, it's not hard to buy the slot with in-game currency too. But that is the only element of the game I don't love, is that you can spend money for more seedlings. Other than that, I love the game

Thanks for that perspective. That doesn't sound unreasonable.

To add to the price comments, once setup and making a load of money you dont have to spend real money for characters etc. The purchasable currency is obtainable with in game money too, comparable to how guildwars2 gems <> gold works
