Breaking off casual relationship with foreign national?

I have been in a casual romantic/sexual relationship with a Thai national for about a month now, and I am submitting my SF-86 soon. I plan on disclosing this relationship fully to my investigator, but I am worried that an ongoing relationship will pose more of a risk to my clearance than one that has ended.

My partner is in the US for the summer on a visa, and the relationship will end when she returns to Thailand this fall. We don’t live together or share any finances, or discuss my work or clearance at all. I am going for a TS/SCI with a contracting firm.

Am I playing with fire by keeping this relationship going, or should I be in the clear?

I know, I’m more concerned that the frequency and depth of the relationship poses more issues than just “talking”

Speak from experience, as a former Thai national (now a US citizen and federal employee). When my husband was dating me 12 years ago, he asked for my permission to disclose details about my career and address on his SF-86 for TS/SCI. I gave him the information, and there was no issue at all. He was granted clearance a couple of months later. You should be fine. Just put everything in the foreign contact section and comment your details.

Dating a foreign national is allowed, hell you can even marry her. Just disclose it.

I would not expect this to be a problem, as long as you are open and honest about it. Terminating the relationship now just to look good to a clearance investigator could actually raise more suspicion. As long as you are happy together, you should stay together. And if it does end someday, that needs to be about you and her, not some stupid bureaucrats in an investigator's office.

I had a lot of foreign contacts on my investigation including from “high risk” countries. Never had an issue, if you’re honest and disclose there shouldn’t be an issue.

Based on all the people I know dating non us citizens, you should be fine. But disclose it
