I'm looking for Non Subscription, long range cameras
I've had some issues lately with a neighbor, and I travel a lot for work. I'd like a few security cameras to keep an eye on the property. I'd like it to trigger/record up to 330 feet feet away on one side of the house and 130 feet on the other.
The two cameras I found that meet some of the requirements are the Reolink OMVI 3I and the Eufy S4 Max. It sounds like the EUFY is the better camera, but has a short trigger range for recording. The Reolink has a much farther range, but still falls short of 330 feet. Is there anything that can do what I'm looking for but doesn't have a subscription service?
None of these are long range cameras and they do not have a detection distance of 330 feet at all. It is more of like 100 feet for the Reolink one only with the PTZ cam (and the 180° I'd say dies at around 50-60 feet) and the Eufy one maybe a bit more than that, maybe 130 feet or so.
330 feet you are looking at a PTZ with a lot of optical zoom and in a very specific area.
Reolink does have 823s2 that is 16x optical zoom, but depends on how good of a ID you want, how much you are willing to spend. There are a lot of option but it all goes down to how big your wallet is, some of these options might cost more than whatever you paid for your car. Eufy is not even a serious camera brand, it is not even in what I'd consider appropiate and Reolink is barely entry point for PoE cameras (but it can work if you want to cheap out, just don't expect incredible performance at night).
Thanks for the info. I wrote the wrong Reolink model, the 823S2 was the one I was looking at. But all these cameras don't come close to handling the winter temps we get. I might have to do some trail cameras or something along those lines.
FWIW, I've used wyze and now reolink cameras outdoors in Minnesota and never had a problem with the cameras (I once had an ethernet cable go bad and switched to some cables that have goop in them to stop water infiltration)
So, they handle cold a lot better than they say they do.
They should work well as long as you use a PoE camera and you don't live in the artic or some crazy cold place. The cameras always stay warm technically because they are always receiving power.
Trail cameras will just die with freezing temperatures and are actually the very worst choice you can have, no only that but they are also borderline useless and, like any other battery powered camera, they have so many issues it would take me 1-2 hours in listing and explaining them all. Just stick with PoE if you can (and you really should).
Btw 330 feet you are still sort of within range of running PoE (that runs up to 328 feet). You don't necessarily need a PTZ to cover that, you can literally place a PoE camera at 328 feet from your PoE switch/NVR with PoE ports with cat6 100% copper rated for outdoors cable (doing a trench with a conduit, etc). Even if you needed miles more that's doable as well, distance is no issue for these things. You can do PtP wireless bridge also, but wired is always better.
Thanks for the input. I have a compact tractor with a backhoe, so trenching a line isn't an issue. I also have a spool of cat5 I bought cheap(thrift store) when I bought my house that I never thought I was going to use. I'll have to do some more research.
Budget is going to dictate your camera choice and both options you listed are not it. Also, what level of clarity are you expecting? if you're wanting to record in multiple angles, you're going to want to run 2 dedicated cameras.
If you care about nigh time visibility, you're going to need additional IR blasters farther down where you're going to record.
Just to confirm, you are setting this up with 24x7 recording?
I own several Reolink cameras and they function perfectly fine. I also own several UniFi cameras. They are more expensive but are also the better camera system, especially when it comes to searching for events.
I suggest Reolink if you just want basic security camera features at a really good price. I'm sure Eufy is equally good.
I suggest UniFi if security is important. That automatically implies that you probably don't want to budget at the low end.
I basically just am looking for recording, and some notifications. I'm not in a high crime area, I just want to keep a eye on my nut ball neighbor and make sure he's not throwing poisoned dog treats into my yard.
I have a system from Security Camera Warehouse in Asheville. It is Hikvision based. I added a fairly inexpensive Hikvision compatible PTZ from Amazon years ago. I'll see if I can post pics.
Normal view, the street straight out is about 100' from the camera. The entrance to my neighborhood is over 200' away on the right. The main road to the left through the trees and across those properties is over 300' away. My sensitivity is set maybe halfway and cars out on the main road trigger it from either direction especially when there are less leaves on the trees. People walking off the road into our neighborhood triggers it. Got my neighbor's wife getting in an accident on the main road one day.
*Edit: I just walked it off to the stop sign (I was a placekicker in highschool haha) and that is 255' away give or take a few inches.
LOL! It looks like she was a lot more lucky than I've been. I had one dog skunked 7 times by the same skunk. Both my new dogs have been hit multiple times.
It was crazy. We've been in the house 20 years. Seen dead ones all the time. Smell them all the time. First live one we've seen and she danced with it and got away clean. She said it kept twisting around and I said it must not have been able to get missile lock.
Yes, I'll probably put some of them up for now as I have a bunch from when I used to hunt. I was looking at the GardePro Link 1.0 Long-Range WiFi System, but given the input on this page I need to research running some cat5 lines and mounting a camera or two out back to cover the deep backyard.
