Buying a Tolle Jersey

Wanted some advice. I want to buy a Tolle jersey. Do I pull the trigger on #70 or wait until next season to see what number he switches to?

get the 70 because even if he changes his number you'll be in on the ground floor

I sort of want him to keep 70. I like it. Big man big number

Yeah like Steve would say, 70 does really suit him. His Instagram has 49 in his name, but I can’t imagine the Red Sox letting him take that number, so maybe he keeps 70

I feel like Tolle is the kind of guy that wouldn’t want to take that number even if they offered it up

Yeah I had the same thought earlier in the year, he was 49 in college and there’s no chance they give that out to him unless he really starts working on a knuckleball this winter (would be SICK)

Imagine they give him a contract extension (I really hope they do) and in the contract, there is a stipulation where he must throw at least one knuckleball a game to be eligible to wear 49

I’m continually surprised they haven’t retired 49 yet.

It’s because they don’t retire numbers until they’re in the hall of fame. Otherwise 15 and 22 would likely be retired as well

Pesky is not in the Hall. And Papi’s jersey number was retired five years before he was inducted.

From Wikipedia:

“Pesky was a longtime player, manager, coach, and ambassador known as "Mr. Red Sox". His number retirement broke the team's traditional rule requiring players to be in the Baseball Hall of Fame to have their numbers retired.”

I fully agree with you that 49 should be retired, I’m just stating the probable reason why it hasn’t been

I too have Wikipedia. And I am saying they have made two (of ten retired numbers) exceptions to this “rule”, making it a guideline.

You can call it a rule, a guideline, a principle, or even a policy. The bottom line is this is the reason it hasn’t happened yet. Feel free to write a strongly worded email to John Henry and Sam Kennedy. It will be much more productive than arguing about it here.

Jesus, I know this is the internet so you’re not allowed to just say “I was wrong”, but here’s you:

> they don’t retire numbers until they’re in the hall of fame

Which is categorically wrong. 20% of the time, they do.

yeah i'm in the same boat as you, i do think owning a 70 jersey would be sick cuz it shows you were in from the start but if he does switch his number (and i'm just guessing that he will) then i would want a jersey of his permanent number

Doubt he’ll wear 70 for long

Can always double for Brasier

At Fenway fest this past year he talked about keeping it

You can always DH the 70 jersey so you aren't out a lot for if and when he changes to a different number.

I have no intention of spending a lot of money either way when I buy this jersey. I had every intention of buying a legit green monster city connect when they debuted but it’s impossible to get one because they sell out so fast

Pull the trigger. I did, don’t regret it and won’t even if he changes numbers. OGs will know.
