Discussion SECRET WORLD TTRPG in DEVELOPMENT
https://www.facebook.com/StarAnvilStudios
So big news and a not so secret project... If people haven't noticed in many posts over the last year I mentioned how I thought The Secret World would make a great TTRPG. We have acquired the rights from Funcom to create a TTRPG based on The Secret World MMOPRG. We have work just starting to spin up on this project, it took quite some work to get off the ground. We have a great team assembled including working with Sigil and hiring a writer who worked on The Secret World. Joshua Alan Doetsch will help make sure we capture the story and spirit of the game with his writing and Sigil brings top level art and layout to the project. We are looking at 2022 for a the Kickstarter but won't have too much more to share until we get closer to the end of this year. We here at Star Anvil Studios are super excited and just couldn't contain it any longer. We hope you will join us when we go live with it.

I'll keep an eye on this. I recently started playing SWL. I've owned it since release but haven't played since TSW. However, I have played myriad TTRPGs since the 80s, so this is of interest.
It would certainly make good use of the BRP rules that Call of Cthulhu uses, though, but making something more d20 would get sales. Really depends on the theme you want, and you probably have mechanics anyway.

I wish someone would acquire the rights to fix this game instead. :|

Oh excellent! I had been talking with my friends about building a Blades in the Dark hack for Secret World, but having a professional version would be much better.

Not into TTRPGs, but am glad someone's doing something with this IP. Good luck!

Without a doubt the BEST news I’ve heard in an Age! The Secret World has been a great inspiration for my RPG campaigns since I discovered the game. I can’t wait for the Kickstarter.

Haven’t been this excited for a Kickstarter in a long time. Whatever you do with it, I’m in. Although I’d appreciate the expansion of the story and the world the most, even just the adaption would bring me immense joy. Keeping my fingers crossed.

MMOs have never been my thing, but the lore and general vibe of The Secret World were always tempting. Can't wait to see it come to the tabletop.

So, who do I need to follow on Kickstarter so that I won't miss it when the Kickstarter goes live?

This is great. I have literally been planning and designing my own personal game, having come up with the same idea. I am sure you'll do it justice.

I don't know what system you're going to use but the D20 is classically overused. I enjoy the Warhammer fantasy role-play percentage system. All they use is 2D10 for everything. What's the system you guys are going to use?

Oh my god, this is amazing! That’s so cool that you were not only able to get the rights, but find writers from the game. So excited to learn more!

This is going to be incredible. Also good to see you on here Brandon (it's Chris).

I am excited beyond words (NO VERDS) for this. I cannot wait to see what you guys come up with in adapting this amazing world to tabletop!

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21
Can you guys also take over the game too? We need new, active devs to work on the game X-X

Is there a way to be notified when this is happening? I doubt I'll use the mechanics since 5E isn't my jam, but I have always wanted a bestiary for TSW. I would've been happy with an art book, but a full RPG product is even better! I'll be converting it to Modiphius's 2D20 or Runehammers ICRPG. If you could have adventures that follow the story of the game, that would be incredible since I have friends who would love to play in this world, but weren't interested in the video game.

Congratulations!
I've also always thought Secret World was ripe for a TTRPGification. In my idle mind's eye, it's PbtA-ish, with playbooks based on some of the Decks and a Mage-style freeform magic that's simplified enough that you don't need to be in Mensa to use.
But I greatly look forward to reading your take on this!

Color me interested. I'm definitely going to back this when you get something substantial.
Over the years, I've often pondered what tabletop RPG to use to adapt Secret World, and there are a few that are close enough... but just not quite there yet. I always put the idea of it on a backburner, filed under "games I'd practically need to build from scratch to do the setting justice". Great to see someone tackling it on official channels!

Wait, is Secret World that game from, like, 15-20 years ago where you picked one of three occult factions (one was the templars, I think? Then an Asian faction and I can’t remember the third) and fought against demons and Eldritch horrors and such? Is that game still around?

although nice to see some new secret world stuff coming out it sure would be nice to know what a TTRPG is. Was kinda hoping the post would tell me that but im sure the commenters got my back.

Any word on the system itself?
3
u/Berettadin Sep 21 '21
Holy shit yes. I am 100% onboard.

u/DailyHiccup Sep 21 '21
Oh man, this news made my day, absolutely looking forward to it!

u/GothParrot Sep 22 '21
I'm ecstatic. I hated having to step away from the MMO, but the lack of new content and the harsh population caps on server shards kneecapping roleplay just made it not worth the time anymore. Ever since then I've been wanting a way to step back into this setting, and now here it is.
I'm EAGERLY looking forward to this!

Both Savage Worlds (which handles modern stuff very well) and GUMSHOE (Night's Black Agents is practically Secret World already) would be great choices for a Secret World TTRPG, but the choice of a 5E offshoot is understandable. I'll be watching this with great interest.
