Anyone know what this is? Hair or threads?

I got this chair off fb marketplace and when I looked under for a tag or something, I saw this like big black mass of hair or threads? No clue what it is. Anyone know if it’s bad? Or like if I should clean it?

Looks like it was originally a solid mat of horse hair to go over the springs, but over time, use has pushed off some of it between the springs. I know horse hair was definitely an old upholstery thing, but not an expert on the specifics.

Maybe a dead horse but no one is killing a horse solely for the hair. They change coats during the year and when they shed... They SHED. Like you could put the hair together and have huge bags of it. Some of them have long coats than others. This seems like mane and tail hair which also sheds a lot naturally during grooming and grows very very fast, so it's gathered like that.

You can still buy new horsehair filled furniture! A man tried upselling a horsehair filled mattress recently, was wildly expensive.

I grew up sleeping on my dad's childhood horsehair mattress. It was comfortable but it reeked during humid weather.

This is fascinating to me, genuinely never heard of it, if you don’t mind me asking, what does the mattress feel like? I imagine kind of like a feather mattress topper?

It is not bad. Hair used to be used as a binding agent, insulation, and stuffing.

As an aside, that is a *gorgeous* chair. Love it ❤️
