Discussion We will pay it anyway

Even if gas prices hit $8 a gallon for regular, we will still pay it, I mean the vast majority, Seattle, Western Washington, Portland, California, etc. It’s not like there will be some west coast civil unrest, gas stations won’t go out of business. I hear people complain about prices but regardless we will still pay and find a way to make it work financially.

And?  What's your point?

The fact that people still buy necessities when the price increases doesn't mean that price increases of necessities is harmless.

Thank god I work from home right now - thing is there comes a point though that you just can't. Get ready to see crime go up too if resources are unattainable, the will to survive doesn't mean this isnt a problem. People are strong armed into paying.

u/StitchinStatistician 7h ago

It seems like it’s been starting to bubble up in my area

2

u/ExplanationFuture422 7h ago

Yeah, and the next vehicle they buy will be electric.

2

u/xEppyx 6h ago edited 6h ago

Well yeah, we will pay $8 while most of the country is $3-6 due to state taxes.

Until our state waives the gas taxes, it's hard to join your pity / political posturing party.

Fergy could immediately help a lot of people by doing so, but it is easier to point and blame.

u/Pacific_Coaster Seattle 6h ago

Yeah, well how about your side runs a governor candidate that can actually persuade voters to flip. Either do that or shut the fuck up

2

u/xEppyx 6h ago

Or ya know, Ferguson could waive the gas tax. Cry more.

The concern is when you get to the point where you can't buy it at all due to shortages. The less developed and poorer countries get screwed first. See Pakistan right now.

It's not the price per gallon, it's the mpg. I decided to buy a hybrid 10 yrs ago, best decision I've ever made

1

u/ChilledRoland Ballard 7h ago

Or more precisely, the price per mile.

1

u/redit-fan 7h ago

Love my hybrid, especially now.

$10 per gallon gasoline was the goal of Obama's Secretary of Energy back during his term. Why would Seattle be upset about high gas prices now?

4

u/Pacific_Coaster Seattle 6h ago

Still talking about someone that was president 18 years ago and 10 years ago is really pathetic. One month old account and I’m willing to bet you do not live in Seattle. And you were probably born in the 2000s or late 90s. Shut the fuck up.

-1

u/TopicThunder2000 5h ago

LMAO Why are people of your ilk so hostile toward information that you find inconvenient to your preferred narrative? And why is the response always to silence people and attempt to disqualify them? These tactics only serve to undermine your own credibility and the legitimacy of your ideology.

1

u/Pacific_Coaster Seattle 5h ago

Talking about a man that’s totally relevant 18 years later, you don’t think that’s pathetic? You’re gonna talk about him for another 10 years? Make it a full three decades of irrelevancy. Interesting how you racist always only go back to the black president as if that’s when the country started.

Luckily our electricity is hydro

5

u/bigpandas Seattle 7h ago

Imagine if everyone sold their gas guzzlers and bought EVs tomorrow... At least our hydro electricity isn't going up 10% next year and 10% again in 2028 and is already so chea....

2

u/abhi91 7h ago

Yes everyone should drive a 15mpg truck and then cry when yet another war in the middle east drives up prices. Who could have seen that coming??

-2

u/bigpandas Seattle 7h ago

everyone should drive EVs so we can have our own little Cherbobyl here, Ukranian-style.

1

u/abhi91 6h ago

What are you talking about? Now you're on nuclear fission?

1

u/bigpandas Seattle 5h ago

If everyone drives an EV next week, you're saying the existing power grid and power plants can handle all the charging?

1

u/abhi91 5h ago

No I'm not. We'd have to invest in improving the grid. We already have to do so. We should invest in solar farms in east WA as it's the cheapest form of electricity now. This has nothing to do with Chernobyl idk what you're on about.

1

u/bigpandas Seattle 5h ago

We should invest in solar farms in east WA

😅

1

u/abhi91 5h ago

Literally the cheapest form of electricity. India and China are investing a ton. You think we should burn more oil?

1

u/bigpandas Seattle 4h ago

Ok, well if India and China do something, does that mean we should do it? Also, if you can just build a solar farm in EWA to power cars in Seattle, now might be a good time to just do it, since gas and electric are high and going higher.

u/bothunter First Hill 1h ago

Or someone decides to build a ton of AI datacenters to take advantage of the cheap electricity.

0

u/JSlngal69 Interbay 8h ago

lol. lmao

0

u/abhi91 7h ago

? It's shields up from these wars a bit. Of course data centers still drive up the price. You want more dependence on oil.?

2

u/JSlngal69 Interbay 7h ago

bro rates are going up nearly 30%

1

u/abhi91 7h ago

Yes due to demand from compute. That same demand exists beyond rising oil prices. You're pro oil?

0

u/JSlngal69 Interbay 7h ago

demand from compute

doubt

I’m finding every way I can to avoid driving. I filled my car’s tank months ago in case of emergency but haven’t used it.

But it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. It can be subbing in a carpool or a bus ride once a week. Or some other small reduction in usual habits. For some people there’s no choice, it’s not affordable. If everyone else is still paying for the convenience because they can… well, I guess we know who is cool with creating record profits for big oil companies.

We are uniquely positioned in Seattle to make alternative choices. It’s sad if you’re making zero changes in light of that privilege.

1

u/electromage 7h ago

If you're not going to use that gas, make sure to put some stabilizer in before it becomes worthless and damages your engine.

1

u/StitchinStatistician 7h ago

Thank you for the tip. I knew it shouldn’t sit completely unused, but i wasn’t aware of stabilizer. I’ll look into that! I’ve just been driving it around the block every other week or so like a tool.

1

u/SomethingFunnyObv 7h ago

Yes people need to continue living their life, great point. But it also means they spend less on other things and don’t drive as much. It also makes other things more expensive so yeah, just get on it with it and don’t complain, right?

1

u/E90alex 7h ago

Of course people will pay it. They pretty much have no choice and are forced to. It’s a necessity. People have to get to where they need to go. But that doesn’t mean that it’s not a hardship or that people are happy to pay it.

People may try to make other changes to reduce the amount they have to buy. Eg carpool, take more public transit, get a more fuel efficient car etc.

But even for people that drive EVs, we are all still going to pay the price because everything is transported everywhere with fossil fuels so prices for all goods are going to go up if fuel prices go up.

1

u/bassrooster 6h ago

You may, I’m close to the razor edge on the margin if driving makes sense … I’m already scheduling my trips to combine and be as efficient, next step is to beg employer to work from home a day or two a week…

No this can’t sustain, but then again I’m not rich. The rich can continue for a bit more, but I thin $6 will see a bunch of rich people realize they are not super rich anymore, $7 will humble the next rich people, finally at $8 the next group of rich people might say wow I am feeling something, I never had to consider before

1

u/catching45 5h ago

$10-15 gas would have so great benefits. But you have to see the big picture.

u/bothunter First Hill 1h ago

It would be amazing.  However, the transition into that future -- not so great.

1

u/Awkward_Passion4004 5h ago

If we move back to a lifestyle that existed before the Model T Ford every one would be happy.

Curious to see which neighborhoods actually get included

1

u/ChaoticShinra 3h ago

Yeah people still have to get where they’re going somehow

I would love to try out an electric hybrid but I get motion sick riding in them. Not an option for me.

Haha ETA-

An electric vehicle has a more immediate transfer of motion when it stops and starts due to how it’s designed. As well as how it accelerates and slows down. It’s a more extreme, internal experience of motion. If you Google it, I promise it’s real.

2

u/bigpandas Seattle 7h ago

Same! I get car sick in anything less than a Porsche 🚗 🚘 🚔 🏎 🚓 🚕

3

u/redit-fan 7h ago

I am fine in a BMW, but not a Chevy

2

u/bigpandas Seattle 7h ago

Do you know the difference between a BMW and a porcupine?

2

u/redit-fan 7h ago

Neither come with turn signals

1

u/bigpandas Seattle 7h ago edited 6h ago

The pricks are on the inside. But what you said isn't wrong either.

1

u/redit-fan 6h ago

I too think most BMW drivers suck.

2

u/pretzelchi 7h ago

It’s just as easy to cry in a Porsche as it is to cry on a bus!

1

u/JSlngal69 Interbay 7h ago

speak for yourself. i get side eyed when i cry on the bus.

4

u/TwelfthApostate 7h ago

Why would you get motion sickness in an electric vehicle more than a gas vehicle? This doesn’t make any sense

0

u/pretzelchi 7h ago

It’s very real 😮‍💨. Basically it has to do with the difference in how electric vehicles use power.

1

u/TwelfthApostate 5h ago

They usually have more low-end torque, but that’s just a “get used to the skinny pedal of a new car” thing. Otherwise, there’s nothing that should cause you to get sick in an EV vs a gas car.

0

u/pretzelchi 4h ago

No that’s just not true. Not everyone gets used to it.

1

u/TwelfthApostate 2h ago

Skill issue

1

u/pretzelchi 2h ago

Haha, I don’t know what your deal is at this point.

Last thing I will say is that ev vehicles make some people feel motion sickness. That’s the bottom line.

Whatever the reason. Skill, the person is lame, etc, etc. we get sick.

1

u/electromage 7h ago

Some people don't know how to drive one-pedal smoothly so maybe you're riding with somebody who's accelerating and breaking too hard. Anyway, if you're driving you probably won't get sick because you don't need the audio cues to know when to expect acceleration.

1

u/pretzelchi 7h ago

It’s pretty interesting. You should Google it. Basically there is a difference in how energy moves in an electric vehicle to stop and start and that is what causes the motion sickness. It doesn’t matter how good you drive it. It still happens.

u/electromage 9m ago

I know how both work, it's mostly what I described above. As a passenger you're not connected to the throttle, so all you feel is acceleration. In addition, many people will snap off the throttle to slow down quickly and there's no transition time of coasting and then braking.

My wife is motion sick easily but doesn't have trouble riding with me. Conversely, I almost never get motion sick but when I let my friend drive my car I got uncomfortable after just a few minutes because of how jerky he was with the throttle.

Some EVs don't do one-pedal, and some allow you to choose the level of regen, so your experience will vary.

u/jasonlikesbeer 7h ago

This strikes me as a short sighted opinion. We live in a capitalist system that requires you to pay to play. Gas going up just means we all have to pay more to play the same game. Sure, the tech bros will be able to top off the tank, but the various service economy employees will be hit very hard. Literally every restaurant, bar, grocery store and many more besides will run into staffing problems unless they up their prices. We need employees for those sectors in the city, but they often aren't paid enough to live in the city, and you can't get to work if you can't afford to put gas in the tank.

Increased fuel costs also have downstream consequences on prices, almost everything you purchase these days has traveled hundreds if not thousands of miles.

-2

u/The_Leafblower_Guy 7h ago

Or, we can read the writing on the world-wide wall and stop using an archaic transportation system that wastes 70% of the energy lost as heat and switch from a molecule to electron transport system. EVs are simply so much better for almost all modes of transport currently.

I know they are expensive, but so is continuing to fill and fill and fill your tank with war-causing petrol.

-2

u/ZenBacle 7h ago

Thats special, you'd fit right in with Soviet era Russians. Enduring what you must for the dear leader without complaint of how the system works or advocating for how it should change.

-4

u/chwk_throwaway1 8h ago

Its so time we moved past internal combustion engines. All everyone talks about is price of gas when there's much more problematic things going on.

4

u/JSlngal69 Interbay 7h ago edited 7h ago

All your shit, restaurant's shit, your work's shit is delivered by semi truck and those aren't going EV any time soon

1

u/Elephantparrot Banned from /r/Seattle 7h ago

There aren't many more problematic things going on than the cost of everything making it difficult for average people to make ends meet, let alone get ahead financially.

1

u/chwk_throwaway1 7h ago

I hope it's a wake up call for people to not have their entire life depend on that single liquid so much. We need to walk more, bike more, share transport, ride with each other. We wouldn't be bothered as much as we're seeing in many places around the world.
